Understanding Avis Preferred Plus Membership Structure
Avis Preferred Plus represents a membership tier within Avis's customer loyalty program. This membership level sits between the basic Preferred membership and higher-tier options like Preferred Plus Elite. The program functions as a points-based rewards system where members accumulate points on car rental transactions, which can then be redeemed for future rentals or other rewards.

Members at the Preferred Plus level receive specific benefits that differentiate their experience from standard Avis renters. The structure operates on an annual membership basis, meaning members maintain their status throughout a calendar year with the option to renew. Avis tracks membership status through enrollment in their system, which requires providing basic personal information such as name, driver's license number, and contact details.
The membership framework integrates with Avis's broader reservation system, meaning Preferred Plus members interact with the same booking platforms as other customers but receive additional perks during their rental experiences. Points accumulation occurs automatically when members use their membership number during rentals, with the points amount varying based on rental location, vehicle class, and rental duration.
Understanding this structure matters because it clarifies what Preferred Plus actually is—a loyalty program tier rather than a credit product or insurance offering. Some people confuse it with the Avis credit card, which is a separate financial product that can complement membership benefits.
Practical takeaway: Review your current Avis rental history to determine which membership tier aligns with your rental frequency. Tracking how many rentals you complete annually helps you understand whether the points you accumulate justify membership enrollment costs.
Points Accumulation and Redemption Process
Preferred Plus members earn points on every rental transaction. The base earning rate typically ranges from 10 to 20 points per dollar spent on the rental, though this rate can vary depending on promotional periods, rental location, and partnership agreements. Premium vehicle classes may offer accelerated earning rates, meaning renting a luxury vehicle generates points faster than renting an economy car.

Redemption thresholds vary, but members generally need to accumulate between 1,500 and 2,500 points to redeem for a free rental day or equivalent value. A free rental day typically covers one day's rental cost plus applicable taxes and fees at an average rate. For example, if a member's average daily rental costs $60, accumulating 2,000 points might yield a $60 rental credit.
The redemption process involves logging into the Avis website or mobile application, navigating to the rewards section, and selecting a redemption option. Members can view their current point balance in real-time through these platforms. Available redemptions typically include:
- Free rental days of various durations
- Point transfers to airline frequent flyer programs
- Merchandise or gift items from partner retailers
- Insurance upgrades or additional rental products
- Upgrades to premium vehicle classes
Points generally remain active for a specified period—often three to five years—after which inactive points may expire. Some members mistakenly believe points expire after one year, but most Avis programs extend the validity period beyond that timeframe. However, if a member's account becomes inactive (no rental transactions), points may expire sooner.
Practical takeaway: Track your points accumulation throughout the year by checking your account balance monthly. Calculate approximately how many rentals you need to complete before reaching a redemption threshold, which helps you plan when to book rentals to maximize reward value.
Car Rental Discounts and Rate Benefits
Preferred Plus members receive negotiated rates that differ from standard walk-up rates at rental locations. These discounted rates vary by location, season, and rental duration. Summer months typically show less discount variation compared to off-season periods when rental demand decreases. Members booking during peak travel times—holidays, summer vacation season, major events—may see modest rate reductions, while off-season rentals can offer more substantial discounts.

The discount structure operates through prepaid rate offerings and member-exclusive promotions. When Preferred Plus members log into their account to make a reservation, the system displays rates specifically calculated for their membership tier. These rates are lower than what customers see when booking without membership. The difference can range from 10% to 30% depending on circumstances, with luxury vehicle classes sometimes showing smaller percentage discounts than economy options.
Many Preferred Plus members also receive promotional emails offering weekend rentals, weekly specials, or location-specific deals. These promotions stack with membership discounts, meaning members might receive a base discount plus an additional promotional reduction. For instance, a member might see a standard member rate of $35 per day, plus an additional $5 promotion, bringing the total to $30 per day.
Avis frequently runs campaigns targeting Preferred Plus members who haven't rented recently. These "win-back" promotions offer enhanced discounts to encourage renewed rental activity. A typical promotion might offer 25% off a weekend rental for members who haven't booked in 60 days.
Location type significantly influences discount levels. Airport rentals typically cost more than off-airport locations due to facility fees and taxes specific to airport operations. However, members receive percentage-based discounts at both location types, so the discount proportionally applies to higher airport base rates.
Practical takeaway: Before booking any rental, log into your Preferred Plus account to compare member rates against public rates for the same rental parameters. This comparison shows your actual savings. Screenshot or note member-exclusive rates, as sometimes calling the reservation line and quoting the member rate results in additional discounts or vehicle upgrades.
Car Class Upgrades and Vehicle Selection Benefits
Preferred Plus membership includes upgrade benefits at the point of rental pickup. The upgrade structure operates on a "space available" basis, meaning upgrades occur when the rental location has higher-category vehicles available beyond what the member reserved. This policy differs from guaranteed upgrade programs that some premium memberships offer.

The upgrade hierarchy at Avis typically follows this structure: economy vehicles can upgrade to compact, compact to midsize, midsize to standard, standard to premium, and premium to luxury options. When a member with a reserved economy rental arrives at pickup, if the location has compact or midsize vehicles available and lower demand for those categories, the agent may offer an upgrade at no additional charge.
Preferred Plus members receive priority placement in the upgrade queue compared to non-members. This means when vehicles become available for upgrading, member accounts are flagged first. However, this priority doesn't guarantee an upgrade every rental—it simply means eligible members are considered before customers without membership status.
Some members believe mentioning their membership or asking directly for upgrades increases approval odds. While location managers retain discretion over upgrade decisions, politeness and flexibility regarding vehicle type can influence outcomes. Members who are open to alternative vehicles or longer rental duration sometimes receive upgrades as a gesture of goodwill by rental agents.
The upgrade benefit particularly helps with international rentals or special trip situations. For example, a member booking an economy sedan for a road trip might find a midsize SUV available for upgrade at pickup, providing more cargo space and comfort for the journey at no additional cost.
Practical takeaway: When making a reservation, book the smallest vehicle category that could feasibly work for your trip. This approach maximizes upgrade potential by placing you at the bottom of vehicle classes where upgrades are possible. Communicate your flexibility during pickup by expressing openness to vehicle alternatives.
Insurance and Protection Options for Preferred Plus Members
Avis offers various insurance and damage protection products that Preferred Plus members can purchase during the rental process. These options include collision damage waiver (CDW), loss damage waiver (LDW), third-party liability coverage, and personal effects coverage. Unlike benefits that come automatically with membership, these are optional add-on products that members can choose to purchase for each rental.

Personal auto insurance policies and credit card benefits often provide rental car coverage, which can overlap with Avis's offered protection products. Before purchasing Avis's insurance at the rental counter, members should understand what coverage their personal policies already provide. Many credit card companies, especially premium cards, include rental car damage coverage as a cardholder benefit. Additionally, personal auto insurance policies frequently extend to rental vehicles, though coverage levels and deductibles vary by policy.
The daily cost of Avis insurance products ranges from $10 to $30
