The Sonos Roam measures approximately 6.9 inches long, 2.7 inches wide, and 2.5 inches tall, making it compact enough to carry between rooms or outdoors. The speaker weighs about 1.3 pounds, so portability is a key feature. The device connects to your home network through Wi-Fi or can operate independently using Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming.
The speaker includes several physical controls on its top surface. You'll find power, play/pause, and volume buttons that let you control playback without needing your phone or other devices nearby. The Roam also has indicator lights that show the current status of the speaker, including power state and network connection status. A charging port on the back allows you to power the device using a USB-C cable and power adapter included in the box.
Battery life on the Sonos Roam ranges from approximately 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, though this can vary based on volume level and usage patterns. The speaker includes a built-in battery that recharges through the USB-C port. Understanding these basic specifications helps you know what to expect during your setup and daily use.
Takeaway: Before starting your connection process, familiarize yourself with the physical layout of your Roam speaker, including the buttons, indicator lights, and charging port. Ensure the device is fully charged before attempting your first connection attempt.
Preparing Your Home Network for Connection
Before connecting your Sonos Roam to your home network, you need to prepare your Wi-Fi environment. This section explains what network requirements and settings matter for successful connection.

Your Sonos Roam works with standard 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks, which is the frequency band used by most home routers. Many modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously. The Roam connects specifically to the 2.4GHz band, so you should verify that your router has this band enabled. Check your router's settings by logging into your router's admin panel through a web browser or your router's companion app.
Network security settings impact connection success. Your Wi-Fi network should use WPA2 or WPA3 security protocols, which are the current standard security measures for home networks. Open networks without passwords are possible but not recommended for security reasons. Write down your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password before you begin setup, as you'll need this information during the connection process.
Wi-Fi signal strength matters for reliable operation. The Roam should be positioned within a reasonable distance from your router during initial setup. Most modern routers can transmit signals 150 feet or more in open space, though walls and obstacles reduce this range. If you're setting up the speaker in a room far from your router, move closer to the router temporarily during setup, then relocate the speaker once connection is established.
Some networks use hidden SSIDs, which means the network name doesn't broadcast publicly. If your network is hidden, you'll need to manually enter the network name and password during setup rather than selecting it from a list of available networks. Having this information ready prevents delays during the connection process.
Takeaway: Write down your Wi-Fi network name and password, verify your router broadcasts a 2.4GHz band with WPA2 or WPA3 security, and position yourself near your router before beginning the connection setup.
Downloading and Installing the Sonos App
The Sonos app is the primary tool for setting up and managing your Roam speaker. This app provides the interface for connecting your speaker to your network and controlling audio playback. Understanding how to obtain and install this app is the first technical step in your setup.

The Sonos app is available on multiple platforms. For smartphones, you can find the app in the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads, or in the Google Play Store for Android devices. The app is also available as a web-based application that you can access through a computer browser. Visit the official Sonos website to find links to all available platforms.
Installation steps vary slightly by device type. On iPhones, open the App Store, search for "Sonos," and tap the cloud icon or "Get" button to begin installation. The system will prompt you to confirm your identity using Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password. On Android devices, open Google Play Store, search for "Sonos," and tap "Install." The system will ask for permissions to access your phone's network and other features necessary for speaker setup.
The web-based version requires no installation. Simply visit sonos.com/setup on your computer's web browser and follow the prompts to create an account. The web version works on both Windows and Mac computers and through various web browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge.
When the app first opens, you may be prompted to create a Sonos account or sign into an existing account. This account stores your speaker settings and music service connections. The account creation process asks for your email address and a password. You'll also be asked to confirm your country and time zone, which helps the app function correctly for your location.
Takeaway: Install the Sonos app on your smartphone or access it through a web browser before you begin the physical speaker connection process. Create or sign into your Sonos account, as this is required to complete the setup.
Connecting Your Roam Speaker to Wi-Fi
Once you have the Sonos app installed and your network prepared, you're ready to connect your Roam speaker to your Wi-Fi network. This process involves powering on the speaker and using the app to guide the connection.

Power on your Sonos Roam by pressing and holding the power button on top of the speaker for approximately three seconds. You'll see the indicator light turn on, initially showing a blue or white color. During startup, the light may blink as the speaker initializes. This startup process typically takes 30 to 60 seconds. Once the speaker fully powers on, the indicator light stabilizes to show the current status.
Open the Sonos app on your device and look for an option to add a new speaker or device. This option may appear as a plus icon, an "Add Speaker" button, or a menu option labeled "Add Device." Tap this option to begin the setup process. The app will search for nearby Sonos devices that are ready to be configured.
When the app detects your Roam speaker, it will display the device in a list. Select your Roam speaker to begin the connection process. The app will ask you to confirm the speaker's location by having you hold your phone near the speaker. This confirms you're setting up the correct device and that it's in range. Simply follow the on-screen instructions, which typically involve holding your phone close to the speaker for a few seconds.
The app will then display a list of available Wi-Fi networks. Select your home network from this list. If your network uses a hidden SSID, you'll see an option to enter the network name manually. Enter your Wi-Fi password exactly as it appears in your router settings. Passwords are case-sensitive, so verify that capital and lowercase letters match your actual password.
After entering your password, the app will attempt to connect the speaker to your network. This process typically takes 30 to 90 seconds. During connection, the speaker's indicator light may change colors or blink. When connection is successful, the light will stabilize to show a steady blue or white color. The app will display a confirmation message indicating that your speaker is connected.
Takeaway: Power on your Roam, open the Sonos app, select your speaker from the device list, and enter your Wi-Fi network credentials. Wait for the connection confirmation in the app before proceeding to speaker configuration.
Configuring Speaker Settings and Preferences
After your Roam speaker successfully connects to your Wi-Fi network, you'll configure settings that personalize how the speaker operates. These settings affect audio quality, speaker naming, and how the device integrates with other Sonos speakers you may own.
