Understanding TSA PreCheck: What It Is and How It Works
TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run by the Transportation Security Administration, a federal agency that oversees airport security in the United States. The program allows certain travelers to go through a faster security screening process at participating U.S. airports. When you have TSA PreCheck, you can keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on during screening. You can also leave your laptop and liquids bag in your carry-on luggage. This streamlined process typically takes less time than standard security screening.

The program costs $78 to $85 for a five-year membership, depending on the enrollment location. However, some credit cards offer benefits that cover or partially cover this cost. Military members, veterans, and people in certain government programs may receive discounts on membership fees.
TSA PreCheck requires an in-person visit to an enrollment center where staff will take your fingerprints, verify your identity, and conduct a background check. The background check examines your criminal history, immigration status, and other security-related information. The entire process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes at the enrollment location, though receiving your membership card may take several weeks after your appointment.
The program is different from other trusted traveler programs like Global Entry, which covers international travel, or NEXUS, which is used at the Canada-U.S. border. Some trusted traveler programs bundle together or offer overlapping benefits, but TSA PreCheck specifically focuses on domestic U.S. airport security screening.
Practical takeaway: TSA PreCheck is a paid membership program that speeds up airport security screening at U.S. airports. Understanding what the program includes helps you determine whether it fits your travel patterns and needs.
Methods to Find Your TSA PreCheck Number
Your TSA PreCheck number is a unique identifier provided to you when your membership is approved. This number is necessary for airline check-in and to receive TSA PreCheck screening at airports. There are several places where you can locate this number depending on how you enrolled and what materials you have available.

The most direct way to find your TSA PreCheck number is through the official TSA PreCheck website at universalenrollment.tsa.dhs.gov. You can log into your account using your email address and password. Your account was created when you scheduled your initial enrollment appointment. Once you're logged in, your TSA PreCheck number typically appears in your account dashboard or profile section. If you forget your password, the website offers a password reset option through your registered email address.
Your TSA PreCheck membership card contains your number printed on the front. If you received a physical card, you can find the number there. The card format varies slightly depending on when you enrolled, but the TSA PreCheck number is always clearly displayed and is typically nine digits long.
During your airline check-in process—either online, at a kiosk, or with an agent—you can provide your TSA PreCheck number. Airlines collect this information to alert the TSA that you should receive PreCheck screening. If you've already provided your number to an airline for a reservation, you can reference that booking confirmation to find the number.
Your approval notice, which you received by mail after your enrollment appointment was processed, may include your TSA PreCheck number. You can search through travel-related mail or documents you received several weeks after your in-person appointment.
Practical takeaway: Your TSA PreCheck number can be found through your online account, on your membership card, in airline reservations, or in your approval paperwork. Having this number readily available before travel makes check-in faster.
Checking Your TSA PreCheck Status and Membership Expiration
Knowing your membership status is important because an expired or pending TSA PreCheck won't grant you screening benefits at airports. The status of your membership changes as you move through the enrollment process, from pending to approved to active to expired.

When you first schedule an enrollment appointment through the TSA PreCheck website, your status becomes pending. After you complete your in-person appointment—where fingerprints are taken and identity is verified—your status moves to under review. During this period, which typically lasts two to four weeks, the TSA conducts its background check. You can check on this status through your online account.
Once the TSA completes its review and you're approved, you'll receive notification by email and mail. Your account status will change to approved, and your membership card will be sent to you. Some people receive their TSA PreCheck number through email before the physical card arrives in the mail. Your active membership means you can now use your TSA PreCheck number at airports to receive expedited screening.
TSA PreCheck memberships last for five years from the date of your approval. Your membership expiration date appears in your online account. You can also find the expiration date on the back of your physical membership card. About 120 days before your membership expires, the TSA typically sends renewal reminders to your email address on file. After your membership expires, you won't receive TSA PreCheck screening unless you renew your membership.
To check your status, log into your account at universalenrollment.tsa.dhs.gov using your email and password. Your account dashboard shows your current status—whether pending, approved, active, or expired. If your status hasn't updated after your in-person appointment or approval email, wait a few business days and check again, as the online system doesn't update in real time.
Practical takeaway: Regularly check your membership status and expiration date through your online account. Knowing when your membership expires helps you plan for renewal before your TSA PreCheck benefits end.
Troubleshooting Common Issues Finding Your Number or Status
Sometimes people have difficulty locating their TSA PreCheck number or accessing their account status. Several common issues can prevent you from finding this information, and understanding how to work through them can resolve the problem.

If you've forgotten your password for your online account, the TSA PreCheck website allows password recovery. Click the "Forgot Password" link on the login page and enter your email address. You'll receive an email with instructions to create a new password. Make sure to check your spam or junk folder if you don't see the email within a few minutes.
If you don't remember which email address you used when enrolling, this can make accessing your account difficult. Think back to the enrollment process and consider what email you typically use for travel or government services. If you enrolled at a local TSA PreCheck enrollment center, you can contact that location and provide your name and date of birth to get help identifying your account email.
Some people enroll but don't receive an approval email or membership card after several weeks. The mail system can experience delays, particularly during busy travel seasons or holidays. If it's been more than four weeks since your in-person appointment and you haven't received your approval notification, you can contact a TSA PreCheck enrollment center by phone or email to verify your status. Have your name, date of birth, and the date of your appointment ready.
If you completed your enrollment appointment but your online account shows no status update after a week, the system may still be processing your information. The online portal doesn't update immediately after your appointment. Waiting another few days before checking again is reasonable. If more than two weeks have passed with no update, you can contact the TSA PreCheck program for assistance.
For individuals who enrolled at a third-party enrollment location (such as a Best Buy or pharmacy), those locations may have different processes for providing your membership number. Contact the specific location where you enrolled to learn how they communicate membership information.
Practical takeaway: Password resets, checking alternate email addresses, and contacting enrollment centers can resolve most issues with accessing your account or locating your number. Keep your contact information current in your account to avoid communication problems.
Using Your TSA PreCheck Number at Check-In and Airport Security
Once you have your TSA PreCheck number and an active membership, you need to provide this number to your airline at check-in to receive PreCheck screening. The way you provide this number depends on your check-in method.
