Understanding Display Brightness and Your Eyes
Display brightness refers to the amount of light your screen emits. When you adjust brightness, you're controlling how intense the backlight is on your monitor or laptop screen. This setting affects not only what you see but also how your eyes feel during and after screen use.

Research from the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that screen brightness plays a role in eye comfort during extended viewing sessions. When your screen is too bright compared to your surroundings, it can cause glare and make your eyes work harder to focus. When it's too dim, you may lean closer to the screen or strain to read text, which creates different problems for eye comfort.
The brightness of your display interacts with ambient light—the natural or artificial light in your room. If you're working in a bright office with lots of windows, a dimmer screen setting might work well. If you're in a dark room at night, the same brightness setting could feel harsh and uncomfortable. Understanding this relationship helps you make informed choices about your display settings throughout the day.
Different types of screens have different brightness capabilities. A typical laptop screen ranges from 200 to 400 nits (a unit measuring brightness), while desktop monitors often reach 300 to 500 nits or higher. Smartphones commonly range from 400 to 1000 nits, which is why phone screens can feel very bright when used in darker environments.
Practical takeaway: Observe your eyes during screen use. If you notice squinting, headaches, or fatigue after an hour or two of work, brightness adjustment may help. Keep in mind that the right brightness level is personal and may change based on your environment and time of day.
Locating Brightness Controls on Windows Computers
Windows computers offer multiple ways to adjust display brightness. The method you use depends on your device type, whether it's a laptop, desktop with an external monitor, or all-in-one computer.

For laptops, the quickest brightness controls are often physical buttons on your keyboard. Look for keys with sun symbols—these typically appear on the top row of your keyboard. One key shows a sun with lines going inward (dims the screen), and another shows a sun with lines going outward (brightens the screen). You may need to hold the "Fn" key while pressing these buttons. The Fn key is usually in the bottom-left corner of your keyboard, near the Ctrl key.
If your laptop doesn't have dedicated brightness keys, or if you're using a desktop monitor, you can adjust brightness through Windows settings. Press the Windows key on your keyboard (it shows the Windows logo) and type "brightness" in the search box. This opens your brightness settings page. You'll see a slider that you can drag left to dim or right to brighten your display.
For external monitors connected to desktop computers, look for physical buttons on the monitor itself. Most monitors have three to five buttons along the bottom edge or on the side. One button typically opens a menu system. Use this menu to navigate to brightness or backlight settings. The exact button layout varies by manufacturer, so check your monitor's manual if you're unsure.
Windows also includes a quick settings option that appears when you swipe from the right side of the screen (on touchscreen devices) or press Windows key + A on any Windows computer. This opens a panel where brightness often appears as one of the top options with a slider control.
Practical takeaway: Start with keyboard shortcuts or quick settings if your device has them—these are the fastest methods. If those don't work, use the Windows settings search for "brightness." For external monitors, locate the physical control buttons and consult the manual if needed.
Using Windows Settings for Detailed Brightness Adjustment
The Windows Settings app provides detailed brightness controls beyond the simple slider. These settings give you more precise options based on your needs and preferences.

To access the full brightness settings menu, open Settings by pressing Windows key + I. In the left sidebar, select "System." Then click "Display." This page shows your current display settings. You'll see a brightness slider near the top. But the display settings page offers much more than this single slider.
One important setting is "Adaptive brightness" or "Brightness level." Some Windows computers have a feature that automatically adjusts brightness based on ambient light sensors. If your laptop has this feature, you'll see a toggle switch labeled something like "Change brightness automatically when lighting changes." Enabling this means Windows adjusts brightness for you throughout the day as lighting conditions change. Disabling it gives you manual control at all times. You can experiment with this setting to see which approach feels more comfortable.
The display settings page also shows your screen resolution, refresh rate, and scale settings. While these don't directly control brightness, they affect how clearly you see content, which relates to eye comfort. For example, if text appears small on your screen, you might assume you need to increase brightness when what you actually need is to increase the text size or screen scaling.
Windows 11 computers often show additional options like "Night light," which appears in the settings menu. Night light reduces blue light emission, particularly useful in evening hours. While this isn't the same as brightness, it works alongside brightness adjustment to reduce eye strain during night use. You can set a schedule for Night light to turn on automatically at sunset and off at sunrise.
If you want to create multiple brightness profiles for different times of day or activities, Windows doesn't have a built-in feature for this. However, understanding the settings available helps you manually adjust as needed. For instance, you might prefer 70% brightness for daytime work and 40% for evening reading.
Practical takeaway: Visit Settings > System > Display to explore brightness options beyond the basic slider. Check whether your device has adaptive brightness and decide if automatic adjustment or manual control works better for you. Note any additional features like Night light that support your comfort.
Adjusting Brightness for Different Activities and Times of Day
The ideal brightness level changes throughout your day based on what you're doing and your environment. Learning to adjust for different situations improves both comfort and productivity.

Morning and daytime work typically benefit from brighter settings. If you're working in an office with bright fluorescent lights or in a room with natural sunlight, your display should match that brightness level somewhat. A good starting point is around 70-80% brightness during daylight hours. This prevents your screen from appearing dim or washed out compared to your surroundings. However, if your room is very brightly lit, you might need 85-100% brightness to see clearly without adjusting your monitor angle.
Afternoon work, especially between 2 and 5 PM, often happens when daylight begins shifting. You might notice your screen brightness that worked well at 9 AM now feels too bright. Making small adjustments—decreasing by 10-20%—can help maintain comfortable viewing as natural light changes. This is where adaptive brightness features prove useful, as they handle these transitions automatically.
Evening and night use requires significantly dimmer settings. When you're working indoors after sunset with only artificial lights, a brightness level of 30-50% is often more comfortable than daytime settings. Very high brightness at night can cause temporary vision difficulty when you look away from the screen, as your eyes have adapted to the bright display. Studies have noted that evening screen brightness contributes to blue light exposure, which may affect sleep quality. Using lower brightness combined with Night light features addresses both concerns.
Different activities warrant different brightness levels too. Reading documents or emails works well at moderate brightness levels (50-70%). Watching videos or viewing photos might feel better at higher brightness (70-85%) to see details and colors clearly. Creative work like photo editing benefits from consistent, moderate brightness (60-70%) to avoid color distortion from overly bright displays.
Outdoor use presents unique challenges. If you're using a laptop outside on a sunny day, you may need maximum brightness to see the screen at all. Some laptop screens reach higher brightness in direct sunlight mode. In this case, positioning your screen to minimize reflections matters as much as maximum brightness.
Practical takeaway: Create a mental brightness guide: 70-80% for bright daytime settings, 50-70% for normal office work, 30-50% for evening use. Adjust in 10% increments and give your eyes a minute to adapt to the new setting before deciding if further adjustment is needed.
