Understanding Bambu Studio: Software Basics and Features
Bambu Studio is free software created by Bambu Lab that works with their line of 3D printers. The program runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux computers. Think of it as the control center for your 3D printer—it's where you prepare designs before printing them. The software lets you take 3D files and get them ready to print by adjusting size, rotation, position, and other settings.

The main workspace shows your print bed from above, similar to looking down at a table. You can see exactly how your object will sit on the printer's build plate. The software includes built-in tools for supporting designs that have overhanging parts. Support structures are temporary scaffolding that holds up parts of your model while printing, then you remove them afterward. This is crucial because some designs cannot print without support material underneath them.
Bambu Studio includes a parts library with thousands of pre-made models you can print. These range from functional items like phone stands and drawer organizers to decorative objects and hobby pieces. You can also load your own designs from websites like Thingiverse or Printables—sites where makers share 3D models for free or for purchase. The software accepts common file formats including STL, STEP, and OBJ files.
One notable feature is the ability to preview exactly how your print will look layer by layer. You can watch a simulation that shows the printer building your object from bottom to top. This preview catches many problems before the printer starts, saving time and materials. The software also estimates how long printing will take and how much material it will use, which helps with planning.
The interface organizes tools into logical sections: model preparation on the left, preview and print settings in the center, and material and printer settings on the right. While the screen contains many options, the most common tasks—loading a model, sizing it, and sending it to print—stay straightforward. Bambu Studio works specifically with Bambu Lab printers, so settings match the capabilities of those machines.
Practical takeaway: Bambu Studio transforms 3D design files into printer-ready instructions. Learning the basic workflow—importing a file, adjusting scale and position, previewing the print, and checking material estimates—covers most printing tasks for beginners.
Getting Started with Bambu Studio Installation and Setup
Installing Bambu Studio takes just a few minutes. Visit the official Bambu Lab website and select the version for your operating system. The installation file is relatively small—around 500 MB—so it transfers quickly on most internet connections. After the installer runs, the program opens with a setup wizard that asks about your printer model and preferred language settings.

When you first open Bambu Studio, you'll need to add your printer to the software. This connection allows the program to send print jobs directly to your machine. If your printer is on the same home network as your computer, Bambu Studio can often find it automatically. You may need to enter a verification code printed on your printer or available in its menu settings. This security step prevents unauthorized devices from sending print jobs to your machine.
The software organizes its main screen into sections. The left panel shows your model tree and part list. The center workspace displays your 3D model and print bed. The right panel contains detailed settings divided into tabs for different functions. Color-coding helps identify different parts of your model—selected parts highlight in different colors, and print preview shows different colors for different materials or print speeds.
Bambu Studio offers both simple and advanced modes. Simple mode hides many technical settings and shows only the most common options. Advanced mode displays every available parameter for experienced users who want fine-grained control. You can switch between modes in the settings menu. This flexibility means the software works for someone printing their first object and for someone optimizing prints for specific materials or quality levels.
The program includes tutorials built into the help menu. These cover common tasks like importing models, adding support material, and adjusting print quality. The Bambu Lab community forum contains thousands of posts from users sharing tips, troubleshooting problems, and showing their printed projects. Many questions get answered within hours by other experienced users.
Practical takeaway: Get your printer discovered by the software first—this is the most important setup step. Once your printer appears in Bambu Studio's device list, you can begin loading and printing models. Start in simple mode to learn the basics before exploring advanced settings.
The A1 Combo Printer: Hardware Overview and Capabilities
The Bambu Lab A1 Combo is an all-in-one 3D printing system released in 2024. It combines printing, washing, and drying functions in one machine, making it one of the most integrated desktop 3D printers available. The printer builds objects up to 256 x 256 x 256 millimeters—roughly the size of a small coffee maker. The print bed heated to 110 degrees Celsius helps materials stick properly and prevents warping.

The A1 Combo prints with resin-based materials, not plastic filament like some other popular printers. Resin printing works by using ultraviolet light to harden liquid resin one thin layer at a time. This creates highly detailed prints with smooth surfaces and fine features. Objects can include intricate details, thin walls, and complex geometries that would be difficult or impossible with other printing methods.
The washing station uses isopropyl alcohol to clean uncured resin from finished prints. After printing, objects remain coated with liquid resin. The washing cycle removes this excess resin, leaving a clean, detailed part. The built-in drying chamber then uses heat and air circulation to prepare the print for the final curing step. This integrated workflow means you stay within the same machine from print completion to finished product.
Print speed on the A1 Combo ranges from 20 to 80 millimeters per hour depending on settings and resin type. A small object might print in 2-3 hours, while larger or more detailed pieces could take 8-12 hours. The large build platform lets you print multiple objects simultaneously, which improves efficiency for batch printing. Many users print several items in one job to maximize each printing session.
The machine includes an automated resin dispensing system that refills the tank before each print. This removes a manual step from the workflow and helps maintain consistent resin levels. The display screen shows print progress, remaining time, and any alerts. Bambu Studio communicates wirelessly with the printer, so you can monitor prints from your computer or phone.
Practical takeaway: The A1 Combo offers integrated printing and post-processing in one system. Its resin-based approach produces highly detailed prints with smooth finishes. Understanding the three-step process—printing, washing, drying—prepares you for the complete workflow.
Printing Your First Project: Step-by-Step Workflow
Your first printing project should start with a simple test model. The Bambu Lab website includes sample files designed specifically for new users. These models typically print in 2-4 hours and use minimal resin, so if something goes wrong, the material cost stays low. Good starter projects include small geometric shapes, simple miniatures, or flat decorative pieces.

Once you have a model file, open it in Bambu Studio. Click the import button and select your STL or OBJ file. The model appears on your virtual print bed in the center workspace. Most models import at their original size, which may be too large or too small for your intended use. Use the scale tool to resize your model. You can type exact dimensions or scale by percentage. Always check the preview to ensure the scaled model still looks correct.
Next, position your model on the print bed. The optimal position balances several factors: you want support material to be minimal, the heaviest part of the object to sit on the bed if possible, and the object to use space efficiently. Reorient your model using the rotation tools until you find a good angle. Bambu Studio's preview system will highlight which parts need support material based on overhangs and angles.
Review the support material settings. Bambu Studio can generate supports automatically based on your model's geometry. The software calculates where supports are necessary and attempts to place them where they're easiest to remove. You can manually add or remove supports by clicking on specific areas. Too many supports waste material and leave marks on your print. Too few supports cause prints to fail or produce poor quality results.
