The company offers employment opportunities across several categories. Retail positions include booksellers, cashiers, café staff, and customer service representatives. These roles are found in physical bookstore locations. Behind the scenes, Barnes & Noble maintains distribution centers, warehouses, and logistics operations that require warehouse workers, inventory specialists, and shipping coordinators. The corporate headquarters in New York City employs professionals in marketing, human resources, finance, information technology, and management positions.
Seasonal employment is another significant opportunity, particularly during the holiday shopping season from September through December. Barnes & Noble typically hires temporary workers to handle increased customer traffic. Many seasonal employees transition to permanent positions after demonstrating their value during the busy season.
The company also operates Barnes & Noble College, which manages bookstores on college and university campuses. These locations employ students and community members in similar retail roles but with schedules often designed around academic calendars. Additionally, Barnes & Noble operates cafés within many stores, creating positions for baristas and food service workers.
