Understanding Concrete Yardage Basics
Concrete yardage refers to the volume of concrete measured in cubic yards. A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, or a cube that measures 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. When contractors or suppliers quote concrete prices, they typically charge per cubic yard. Understanding this measurement is essential for anyone planning a concrete project, whether pouring a driveway, patio, foundation, or walkway.

The term "yardage" comes from the old English measurement system still used in the construction industry across North America. While most scientific fields use metric measurements, the construction trades have maintained cubic yards as the standard volume measurement for concrete. This guide focuses on the calculations and methods you need to determine how much concrete your project requires.
Concrete is sold by volume, not by weight, though weight calculations can also be useful. A cubic yard of concrete weighs approximately 3,600 to 4,050 pounds, depending on the mix design and aggregate composition. Knowing the volume helps you order the correct amount, avoiding waste or shortages that can disrupt your project timeline and increase costs.
Before calculating concrete yardage, you need three measurements: length, width, and depth (or thickness). All measurements should be in feet, which makes the conversion to cubic yards straightforward. The basic formula is: length (in feet) × width (in feet) × depth (in feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards needed.
Practical Takeaway: Gather a measuring tape and write down the length, width, and thickness of your project area in feet. Double-check your measurements, as errors here will throw off your entire calculation. Measure multiple spots if the area is irregular, as some concrete slabs settle unevenly or project areas may not be perfectly rectangular.
Calculating Rectangular Slab Yardage
Rectangular slabs are the most common concrete projects. These include driveways, patios, walkways, and foundations. Calculating yardage for rectangular areas is straightforward because all corners meet at right angles and the depth is consistent across the entire surface.

To calculate a rectangular slab, measure the length and width of the area in feet. Then measure the thickness (depth) of the concrete you plan to pour. Standard thicknesses range from 3 inches for walkways and patios to 6 inches for driveways and 8 inches or more for industrial floors. For this calculation, convert inches to feet by dividing by 12. For example, 4 inches equals 4÷12 or 0.33 feet.
Let's work through a real example. Suppose you're pouring a driveway that measures 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, and will be 4 inches thick. First, convert 4 inches to feet: 4÷12 = 0.33 feet. Then apply the formula: 20 × 10 × 0.33 = 66 cubic feet. Finally, convert to cubic yards by dividing by 27: 66÷27 = 2.44 cubic yards. You would order 2.5 cubic yards to account for rounding and minor waste.
Here are common thickness conversions for quick reference:
- 2 inches = 0.17 feet
- 3 inches = 0.25 feet
- 4 inches = 0.33 feet
- 5 inches = 0.42 feet
- 6 inches = 0.50 feet
- 8 inches = 0.67 feet
When ordering concrete, always round up to the nearest half yard or full yard. Concrete trucks cannot deliver partial quantities, and it's better to have slightly more than to run short during pouring. Extra concrete can be used for future small projects or disposed of properly.
Practical Takeaway: For your rectangular project, multiply length × width × thickness (in feet), then divide by 27. Write down your calculation and round up when ordering. Contact local concrete suppliers to understand their minimum order requirements and delivery fees for your area.
Working With Irregular Shapes and Areas
Many concrete projects don't have perfectly rectangular shapes. A patio might have curved edges, an L-shaped driveway, or an oddly configured foundation. Calculating yardage for these irregular areas requires breaking them into smaller, manageable rectangular sections and calculating each separately before adding the totals together.

For an L-shaped area, imagine drawing a line to divide it into two rectangles. Measure each rectangular section independently, calculate the yardage for each, and then add them together. For example, an L-shaped driveway might be divided into one 20-foot by 10-foot section and another 10-foot by 8-foot section. Calculate each at your chosen thickness, then sum the cubic yards.
Curved or rounded edges require approximation. One common method is to measure the longest and shortest distances across the curved area, add them together, and divide by two to find an average width. Use this average width in your calculations. While this method isn't perfectly precise, it provides a reasonable estimate for ordering purposes. Another approach is to slightly overestimate by treating the curved area as if it were slightly larger rectangular sections.
For complex shapes, consider creating a simple scale drawing on graph paper. Assign each grid square to represent a specific real-world distance, then outline your project area. Count the grid squares to estimate total area, then multiply by your thickness and divide by 27. This visual method helps catch measurement errors and gives you a secondary verification of your calculations.
Triangular sections sometimes appear in concrete work, such as tapered ramps or corner sections. The formula for a triangle is: base × height ÷ 2. Multiply that result by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
Practical Takeaway: Sketch your project area, mark all measurements clearly, and identify natural dividing lines that create rectangles. Calculate each section separately, then add the results. This method reduces errors and helps you visualize potential issues before concrete is ordered.
Adding Extra Yardage for Waste and Contingency
Professional contractors typically add 5 to 10 percent extra concrete to their calculated amounts to account for waste, spillage, and uneven terrain. While your mathematical calculation may show that you need exactly 5.2 cubic yards, ordering 5.5 or 6 cubic yards provides a safety margin. Running short of concrete mid-pour creates serious problems—you cannot patch concrete seamlessly once it begins to set.

Waste occurs for several reasons. Some concrete may spill during transport in the wheelbarrow or mixing process. The ground beneath your slab may have slight variations in grade, requiring extra concrete in low spots to achieve uniform thickness. When finishing concrete, workers may need to overfill edges slightly to ensure proper compaction and appearance. Additionally, concrete trucks often cannot empty completely, so some material remains in the drum.
The amount of extra yardage to order depends on several factors. Small projects with experienced workers might need only 5 percent extra. Large projects or those on uneven terrain might warrant 10 to 15 percent extra. If your ground preparation is uneven or your area includes multiple sections at different elevations, add the higher percentage.
To calculate extra yardage, multiply your total calculated yardage by 0.05 to 0.10. For example, if you calculated 10 cubic yards and add 10 percent, you would order 11 cubic yards. Adding 5 percent would mean ordering 10.5 cubic yards, which you would round to 11 since concrete comes in half-yard increments.
Some homeowners worry about leftover concrete becoming waste. However, leftover concrete can be beneficial. You might pour a small pad for a future project, create a level base for an outdoor utility box, or simply leave it cured as extra material. Concrete is durable and can be stored indefinitely if left on a clean surface. Breaking up excess concrete for disposal should be a last resort, as it requires equipment rental or professional services.
Practical Takeaway: Calculate your needed yardage using the formulas provided, then add 5 to
