Overview of the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division
The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation and handles vehicle registration, driver's licenses, and related motor vehicle services throughout the state. Understanding how to contact this agency can help you navigate common tasks like renewing a registration, updating your address, or obtaining driving records.

The Arizona MVD processes millions of transactions each year. In 2023, the division handled over 2.5 million vehicle registrations and managed records for approximately 5.6 million registered vehicles in Arizona. With this volume of activity, knowing the right contact method for your specific question or task can save you time and frustration.
The MVD operates through multiple channels—phone lines, in-person offices, mail, and online services. Each channel works better for different types of requests. For example, if you need to renew your registration, the online system may be fastest. If you have a complex question about a suspended license, calling or visiting in person might give you clearer answers.
Arizona has 16 MVD service locations spread across the state, from Phoenix to smaller communities. The division also partners with third-party vendors like motor vehicle departments in some cities and counties, as well as with private service centers. These partnerships expand where and how you can handle routine transactions without always visiting an official MVD office.
Practical takeaway: Before contacting the MVD, identify what type of service you need. This will help you choose whether to use the phone, website, mail, or visit a physical location.
Phone Contact Methods and What to Expect
The Arizona MVD operates a customer service phone line that handles general inquiries, registration questions, and licensing issues. The main phone number is 602-255-0072. This line is available during standard business hours, typically Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding state holidays. Call volume is often heaviest on Mondays and toward the end of the month, so expect longer wait times during these periods.

When you call, have your information ready. For registration questions, gather your vehicle identification number (VIN), current registration documents, and license plate number. For driver's license questions, have your driver's license number or date of birth available. Speaking clearly and being prepared with these details helps representatives answer your questions more quickly and accurately.
The phone system may route you through an automated menu before connecting you to a representative. Common menu options include pressing 1 for vehicle registration, 2 for driver's license services, 3 for commercial driver's license inquiries, and 4 for other services. Selecting the correct option helps route your call to the right department faster.
If you cannot reach the MVD by phone, busy signals or full call queues are common during peak times. The MVD does not currently offer callback services, so you may need to call back later. Some people find that calling early in the morning or late in the afternoon produces shorter wait times than midday.
Beyond the main line, specific MVD offices have individual phone numbers. For example, the Phoenix Downtown office can be reached at different numbers than the Tucson or Mesa locations. These local numbers may result in faster connections if you're calling about services at a particular office.
Practical takeaway: Prepare your vehicle and personal information before calling, choose the correct menu option, and try calling during off-peak times for shorter waits.
In-Person Service Locations and Hours
Arizona operates 16 full-service Motor Vehicle Division offices located throughout the state. The largest and busiest office is the Phoenix Downtown location at 1801 West Jefferson Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007. Other major offices serve the Tucson, Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale areas. Smaller communities like Flagstaff, Prescott, and Yuma also have dedicated MVD offices.

Most MVD offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some variation by location. Some offices stay open until 6 p.m. on certain days. A few locations offer limited Saturday hours, typically from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but this varies. The Phoenix Downtown office, for instance, occasionally offers extended or Saturday hours during busy seasons.
Visiting in person works well for tasks that require document verification, such as obtaining a replacement driver's license, handling title transfers, or resolving registration disputes. In-person visits also allow you to ask follow-up questions and understand complex situations better than you might over the phone.
When visiting an MVD office, arrive early if possible. Most locations issue numbered tickets when you enter, and you wait in line until your number is called. Peak times at most offices are between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Coming in the first hour after opening or shortly before closing typically means shorter waits. Some offices also experience busy periods around the 15th and end of each month when vehicle registration renewals are due.
Parking is available at most locations, though downtown Phoenix has limited free parking. If you're visiting the downtown office, paid parking lots and street parking are nearby. Some suburban offices have ample free parking, making them potentially easier to access if you live in those areas.
Practical takeaway: Visit an MVD office early in the day or late in the afternoon to avoid peak wait times, and bring all required documents related to your transaction.
Online Services and Digital Transactions
The Arizona MVD offers an online portal at azmvd.gov where you can handle many transactions without visiting an office or calling. Common online services include vehicle registration renewal, address changes, duplicate document requests, and paying traffic tickets or vehicle registration fees.

Vehicle registration renewal is the most frequently used online service. If your registration is current and your vehicle information hasn't changed, you can renew online in about 10 minutes. The system accepts debit cards, credit cards, and electronic checks. The renewal typically takes effect immediately once payment processes, so you can print your temporary registration right away if needed.
The online system also allows you to update your mailing address without visiting an office. This service works if you've moved and need your registration documents mailed to your new address. Address changes typically process within 3 to 5 business days.
Duplicate title or registration documents can be requested online as well. The system generates these documents electronically, and you can pay the replacement fee (typically $5 to $10) through the website. Physical copies are usually mailed within 5 to 10 business days.
However, some services cannot be handled online. These include obtaining a new driver's license, handling title disputes, correcting errors on existing documents, or dealing with suspended licenses. For these matters, you must contact the MVD by phone or visit an office in person.
The MVD website also contains informational resources, including a frequently asked questions section, links to required documents, fee schedules, office hours, and appointment information. You can search for answers to common questions without needing to contact the division directly.
Practical takeaway: Use the online portal for routine renewals and updates, but plan to contact the MVD directly for more complex issues requiring document verification or special handling.

Processing times for mail-in requests vary depending on current workload but typically range from 10 to 30 business days. During peak seasons (late month or tax time) or after holidays, processing may take longer. For this reason, mailing should not be your first choice if you need something within a specific timeframe.
When mailing documents, include a cover letter explaining your request clearly. State your full name, date of birth, current address, and the specific service you're requesting. Include your vehicle identification number (VIN), license plate number, or driver's license number depending on the type of request. Make copies of all documents you send in case the originals are lost in transit.
Use certified mail with return receipt if your submission includes original documents or you need proof that the MVD received your request. The cost of certified mail is usually
