Understanding Dental Implants and How They Work
A dental implant is a replacement tooth that functions like a natural tooth. It consists of three main parts: the implant fixture (a small screw made of titanium), the abutment (a connector piece), and the crown (the visible tooth part that looks and feels like a real tooth). The implant fixture is surgically placed directly into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over several months, the bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration, which creates a strong, stable foundation. Once this process completes, the abutment and crown are attached to complete the restoration.

Dental implants differ significantly from other tooth replacement options. Unlike dental bridges, which require grinding down adjacent teeth for support, implants stand independently without affecting neighboring teeth. Implants also differ from dentures, which are removable and can shift during eating or speaking. Implants are permanently fixed in place and provide a bite force similar to natural teeth, typically around 200 pounds per square inch.
The success rate for dental implants is notably high. Research shows that implant success rates range from 95 to 98 percent over a 10-year period when properly placed and maintained. This high success rate has made implants increasingly popular in modern dentistry. The longevity of implants also exceeds other options—while a dental bridge may last 10 to 15 years and dentures require replacement every 5 to 8 years, implants can last 20 to 30 years or longer with proper care.
The implant process involves multiple stages spread over several months. After the initial consultation and planning phase, the surgical placement happens in one visit. Then comes the osseointegration period, typically lasting 3 to 6 months. Finally, the restoration phase involves creating and placing the crown. Understanding this timeline helps people plan accordingly for work, social activities, and other commitments.
Practical takeaway: Dental implants are designed to replicate natural tooth structure and function. Learning about each component and how they work together provides a foundation for comparing implants to other tooth replacement methods available in Firestone.
Types of Implant Options Available in Firestone
Firestone dental practices offer several implant categories to address different patient situations. Single tooth implants replace one missing tooth. These are ideal for patients with otherwise healthy teeth and are often the most straightforward implant procedure. The implant is placed in the gap left by the missing tooth, and the crown is custom-made to match the color and shape of neighboring teeth.

Multiple tooth implants address gaps where two or more consecutive teeth are missing. Rather than placing an implant for each missing tooth, dentists may place two or three implants and connect crowns between them, reducing the total number of surgical sites. This approach is often more economical while still providing excellent stability and function. Some patients in Firestone choose this option when three to four teeth are missing in a row.
Full mouth implants represent the most comprehensive implant option, designed to replace all teeth in one or both arches of the mouth. Two common approaches exist: the All-on-4 technique, which uses four implants strategically placed to support a full arch of teeth, and the All-on-6 technique, which uses six implants for greater stability. These approaches are particularly valuable for patients with significant bone loss or multiple missing teeth. The All-on-4 method has shown success rates of approximately 98 percent over 5 years according to various dental studies.
Implant-supported dentures combine implant technology with denture design. Rather than wearing a traditional denture that rests on the gums, this denture attaches to two or more implants using special connectors. This provides greater stability than conventional dentures, reducing slipping and shifting during eating or speaking. Some Firestone practices specialize in converting patients from traditional dentures to implant-supported versions.
Mini implants represent a smaller diameter option, typically 3 to 3.5 millimeters in diameter compared to standard implants at 4 to 5 millimeters. These work well for patients with limited bone width or those seeking a less invasive option. However, they have lower load capacity and are typically used for single teeth in less demanding positions or to anchor dentures.
Practical takeaway: Different implant types serve different needs based on how many teeth are missing and bone structure. Reviewing these categories helps patients understand which options might be mentioned during a consultation with a Firestone dentist.
The Dental Implant Procedure and Timeline
The implant journey begins with a comprehensive consultation and examination. During this visit, the dentist discusses the patient's medical history, current medications, and dental health. X-rays or CT scans create a detailed map of the jawbone, showing bone height, width, and density. This imaging is critical because adequate bone volume is necessary for implant success. If bone loss has occurred due to missing teeth, the dentist may recommend bone grafting before implant placement. A bone graft involves adding bone material to build up the jaw structure, a process typically requiring 4 to 6 months of healing before implant surgery.

The surgical placement of the implant itself is typically an outpatient procedure lasting 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the number of implants and complexity. The dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the area, and some patients receive sedation for comfort. An incision is made in the gum, and a small hole is carefully drilled into the jawbone. The titanium implant screw is inserted into this hole and the gum is stitched closed. Many patients report that the procedure is less uncomfortable than they anticipated, with most discomfort occurring during recovery rather than during surgery itself.
The osseointegration phase follows surgery and lasts approximately 3 to 6 months. During this time, the body's natural healing process causes bone to grow directly onto the implant surface, creating an extremely strong bond. Patients wear a temporary tooth during this period to maintain appearance and function. This phase is critical and cannot be rushed—adequate healing time ensures the implant's long-term success. Factors affecting healing speed include age, overall health, bone quality, and smoking status. Smokers often experience slower healing and may have lower success rates.
Once osseointegration is complete, the dentist surgically exposes the implant and attaches an abutment, the connector piece that holds the crown. In some cases, this happens during a separate minor surgical appointment. The dentist then takes detailed impressions or digital scans to create a custom crown that matches the patient's other teeth. This creation process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Finally, the finished crown is permanently attached to the abutment, completing the restoration. From start to finish, the entire implant process usually takes 6 to 9 months, though some systems allow faster timelines.
Practical takeaway: Understanding the multi-stage timeline helps patients plan their schedule and set realistic expectations. Knowing what happens at each stage reduces anxiety about the process and prepares patients for recovery needs after surgery.
Cost Factors and Payment Considerations for Firestone Patients
Dental implant costs in Firestone vary based on several factors. A single tooth implant typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,000, including the implant fixture, abutment, and crown. Multiple tooth implants cost more in total but may be less expensive per tooth than multiple single implants. Full mouth restoration using All-on-4 implants generally ranges from $20,000 to $35,000 per arch. These figures represent national averages, and Firestone practices may price services differently based on their experience level, overhead costs, and the specific materials used.

Bone grafting, when necessary, adds $500 to $3,000 to the total cost depending on the amount of bone needed and the graft material used. Sinus lift procedures, performed when implants are placed in the upper back jaw, typically add $1,500 to $3,000. Extractions of remaining damaged teeth, if needed before implant surgery, cost $75 to $300 per tooth depending on complexity. These ancillary procedures significantly affect the final bill, so patients should ask their dentist whether these are anticipated.
Dental insurance coverage for implants is limited. Many insurance plans classify implants as cosmetic or major restorative work and cover only 50 percent of costs, if any coverage exists at all. Some plans exclude
