Understanding Dental Implants and How They Work
A dental implant is a replacement tooth made of three main parts: the implant itself (a small screw made of titanium), the abutment (a connector piece), and the crown (the visible tooth that looks and functions like a natural tooth). The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone where a tooth is missing, and over time, the bone grows around it to hold it securely in place. This process is called osseointegration.

Titanium is chosen for implants because it is biocompatible, meaning the body recognizes it as safe and doesn't reject it. The material has been used in medical and dental procedures for decades. Once the bone has bonded with the implant—a process that typically takes several months—the abutment is attached. Finally, a crown is placed on top, creating a restoration that functions much like a natural tooth.
Dental implants differ from other tooth replacement options like dentures or bridges. Unlike dentures, which rest on top of the gums and can shift around, implants are anchored directly into the jawbone. Unlike bridges, which require grinding down healthy teeth next to a gap, implants stand alone and don't affect surrounding teeth. This is one reason many people find implants preferable for long-term tooth replacement.
The success rate for dental implants is high. Research shows that approximately 95-98% of implants placed by qualified dentists last successfully. However, success depends on factors including proper placement, adequate bone structure, good oral hygiene, and overall health. Implants can last 15-20 years or longer with proper care, and many people have implants that function well for decades.
Practical Takeaway: Learn the basic anatomy of an implant before pursuing treatment. Understanding how the three components work together will help you have better conversations with dental professionals about whether implants might suit your situation.
Common Types of Dental Implant Options
There are several approaches to dental implant treatment, and understanding the differences can help you discuss options with a dentist in Tunkhannock. The most common type is the endosteal implant, which is placed directly into the jawbone. This type works well when you have adequate bone height and width. Endosteal implants come in various shapes—some are screw-shaped (the most common), while others are cylinder-shaped or have a blade design.

Another type is the subperiosteal implant, which sits on top of the jawbone but under the gum tissue. This option was more common years ago and is now used mainly in cases where a person has lost significant bone height and cannot or prefers not to have bone grafting surgery. Subperiosteal implants require careful planning and custom fabrication based on the patient's bone shape.
For people missing multiple teeth, there are additional configuration options. A single implant supports one crown. An implant-supported bridge uses multiple implants to support several crowns in a row, replacing multiple missing teeth without affecting the teeth between them. Implant-supported dentures use multiple implants (often four to six) to hold a denture firmly in place, offering much better stability than traditional dentures that rest only on gums.
All-on-4 and All-on-6 are specific configurations where four or six implants support an entire arch of replacement teeth—either upper or lower jaw. These approaches work well for people who have lost most or all of their natural teeth in one jaw. The number of implants used affects the distribution of chewing force and overall stability. A dentist will recommend the approach based on bone structure, tooth loss pattern, and individual circumstances.
Material choices have also evolved. While titanium remains the standard, some newer implants use zirconia (a ceramic material). Zirconia implants may appeal to people concerned about metal in their body, though titanium has a longer track record. Both materials have shown good results when properly placed and maintained.
Practical Takeaway: Different implant types serve different needs. Before meeting with a dentist, consider how many teeth you're replacing and what matters most to you—whether that's bone-friendly options, aesthetic concerns, or supporting dentures. This information will help guide your conversation.
Steps Involved in the Dental Implant Process
The dental implant process typically unfolds over several months and involves multiple steps. The first step is a comprehensive evaluation, which includes a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums. Your dentist will take X-rays and possibly a CT scan to assess bone height and width. They will discuss your medical history, current medications, and any health conditions that might affect implant placement. This initial consultation also involves discussing what you want to achieve and what to expect during treatment.

If you have tooth decay or gum disease, these issues usually need to be treated before implant placement. Healthy gums and adequate bone are essential for implant success. Your dentist may recommend professional cleaning or other preparatory procedures. If bone is insufficient, bone grafting might be recommended. Bone grafting involves adding bone material (from your own jaw, a donor source, or synthetic material) to increase the height or width of the jawbone. Grafting typically requires healing time of several months before implant placement can proceed.
Once your mouth is ready, the implant placement surgery is scheduled. This procedure involves making a small incision in the gum to expose the bone, creating a hole the appropriate size, and carefully threading the titanium implant into place. The gum is then closed with stitches. This surgery is typically done under local anesthesia, and many offices offer sedation options to help patients feel more comfortable. The procedure generally takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on complexity and the number of implants placed.
After implant placement, osseointegration begins. This healing phase lasts typically three to six months, though it can take longer in some cases. During this time, you must follow specific care instructions: eating soft foods, avoiding the implant site when chewing, maintaining excellent oral hygiene, and attending follow-up appointments. Your dentist will monitor healing through periodic X-rays and examinations. Once integration is complete, the next phase begins.
The final phase involves placing the abutment and crown. If immediate loading isn't used, a small connector (abutment) is attached to the implant through a second minor procedure. Then an impression is taken to custom-create your crown. Crowns are typically made in a dental laboratory over a period of one to two weeks. Once ready, the crown is attached to the abutment with cement or a screw. You'll receive instructions on cleaning and caring for your new implant tooth.
Practical Takeaway: Understand that implant treatment requires patience—the entire process from initial consultation to final crown typically takes four to nine months. Planning ahead and budgeting time for healing is as important as financial planning.
Cost Considerations and Financial Information About Dental Implants
Dental implants involve several cost components that people should understand. The implant fixture itself (the titanium screw) typically costs between $1,000 and $3,000. The abutment usually adds $300 to $500. The crown typically ranges from $1,000 to $3,000, though this varies based on materials and complexity. Therefore, a single tooth implant often falls in the range of $2,300 to $6,500, though prices vary significantly based on individual circumstances and the specific dental office.

Additional costs may apply if preliminary procedures are needed. Bone grafting, if required, typically adds $500 to $3,000 depending on the amount of bone needed and the graft material used. Sinus lifts (a procedure to increase bone height in the upper jaw) generally cost $1,500 to $5,000. Tooth extraction, if needed before implant placement, might add a few hundred dollars. Imaging and diagnostic procedures like CT scans typically cost $200 to $1,000. Some of these preparatory costs may be covered by dental insurance, though implants themselves are often not.
Insurance coverage for implants varies widely. Traditional dental insurance plans often do not cover implant placement, though they may cover portions of preparatory work like extractions or bone grafting. Some insurance plans cover 50% of implant-related expenses. Others cover nothing related to implants. Coverage limitations and exclusions differ significantly between plans, so it's important to review your specific policy or call your insurance company directly. Medicaid coverage of implants is limited and varies by state.
