Understanding Royal Caribbean Luggage Tag Requirements and Options
Royal Caribbean cruise ships require all passengers to have proper luggage tags on their bags before boarding. These tags serve as identification labels that help the cruise line's staff sort and deliver your belongings to your cabin. Official luggage tags provided by Royal Caribbean typically come with your cruise documents, but many passengers choose to create their own versions using DIY methods. Understanding what information needs to appear on your tags and how the cruise line's baggage system works will help you create effective homemade alternatives.

When you book a Royal Caribbean cruise, the cruise line assigns each passenger a specific booking reference number and cabin assignment. This information appears on official luggage tags so that baggage handlers can route your suitcases to the correct location. The tags contain your name, cabin number, and sometimes a barcode or scannable code that connects to the ship's baggage management system. Creating your own tags requires including these same essential details in a format that's easy for handlers to read quickly while moving luggage through the boarding process.
The cruise industry processes thousands of bags each day, with luggage typically being loaded onto the ship before passengers board. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, approximately 30 million cruise passengers travel annually, and proper baggage identification prevents mix-ups that could delay your vacation. Royal Caribbean allows passengers to use their own luggage tags as long as they include the required information clearly and securely. This flexibility has made DIY luggage tags popular among cruise travelers who want custom designs or who prefer making their tags at home rather than waiting for official versions to arrive.
One practical consideration is durability. Your homemade tags will travel through baggage systems, potentially getting wet or scuffed during the loading process. Using waterproof materials and securing your tags properly ensures they remain readable throughout your journey. Many experienced cruisers recommend laminating homemade tags or using weatherproof label stock to protect the information from moisture and wear.
Practical Takeaway: Before creating your DIY luggage tags, gather your booking reference number, assigned cabin number, and full name from your Royal Caribbean reservation confirmation. These three pieces of information form the foundation of any effective luggage tag design, whether homemade or official.
Materials and Tools Needed for Creating DIY Luggage Tags
Creating professional-looking luggage tags at home requires relatively simple materials that you likely already have available. The most basic approach uses cardstock paper, scissors, and a hole punch to create tags that attach to your luggage handles. However, several material options exist depending on your preferred durability level and aesthetic preferences. Understanding the pros and cons of each material will help you choose the best approach for your specific needs and available resources.

Cardstock or heavy-weight paper represents the most budget-friendly option. A standard package of colored cardstock costs between $3 and $8 and provides enough material for multiple tags. You can print your information directly onto cardstock using a home printer, then cut tags to your desired size. A standard luggage tag measures approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches, though you can customize these dimensions. You'll need basic scissors or a paper cutter to create straight edges. A hole punch ($2 to $5) creates a hole for attaching the tag to your luggage handle using string, cord, or a plastic loop.
Laminating offers the next level of protection. A cold laminator or laminating sheets cost between $15 and $50, depending on the model. Laminating your cardstock tags after printing creates a waterproof barrier that protects against moisture from ship showers, pool splashes, and potential rain during boarding. Some office supply stores offer laminating services for approximately $0.50 to $1.00 per item if you prefer not to purchase equipment. This method adds durability without significantly increasing your costs or effort.
Vinyl label stock designed for printer use represents another option. This weatherproof material comes in pre-cut label sheets that you can print directly onto using a standard printer. Packages containing 10 to 20 labels typically cost $8 to $15. Since the labels are self-adhesive, you can apply them directly to your luggage rather than attaching them with holes and cord. This method works particularly well if you prefer a sleeker appearance or have luggage handles that don't accommodate traditional attached tags.
Kraft paper or cardboard provides an eco-friendly alternative that many cruisers appreciate. Kraft paper has a pleasant appearance and can be printed or hand-written with your information. While not as waterproof as laminated cardstock or vinyl, kraft paper tags maintain legibility well enough for the relatively short timeframe your luggage spends in the ship's baggage system. Many environmental-conscious travelers prefer this option since it's recyclable.
Additional supplies you may want to gather include: colored markers or pens for hand-writing information, a printer for producing clear text and designs, string or cord for attaching tags (waxed twine works well and resists moisture), plastic luggage loops or cable ties as alternative attachment methods, and a ruler for creating even cuts and straight lines. Having these items on hand before you begin ensures you won't need to make additional shopping trips once you start your project.
Practical Takeaway: Start with cardstock and laminating sheets if you want durability without substantial expense. This combination typically costs less than $20 total and creates tags that withstand the baggage handling process effectively. If you already own a laminator or have access to one through your workplace or library, your material costs drop to under $5.
Step-by-Step Process for Designing and Creating Your Tags
Designing your DIY luggage tags involves several straightforward steps that transform blank material into functional cruise ship baggage labels. The design process considers both aesthetic preferences and practical readability requirements. Since baggage handlers typically spend only seconds examining each tag while processing hundreds of bags, your design must prioritize clarity and information hierarchy. Following a structured approach ensures your tags contain all necessary information in an organized, easy-to-read format.

Begin by determining your tag dimensions. Standard luggage tag size measures 2.5 inches wide by 4 inches tall, matching the proportions of official cruise line tags. This size provides sufficient space for all required information while remaining proportional to most luggage handles. If you prefer a different size, ensure your tags remain large enough that text remains legible and small enough that they don't create excessive weight or bulk on your luggage. Using a ruler, mark your chosen dimensions on your cardstock or paper before cutting to ensure straight, even edges.
Next, plan your information layout. The tag should display: your full name prominently at the top, your Royal Caribbean booking reference number in the center, and your assigned cabin number at the bottom. This arrangement follows the same hierarchy as official tags, making it familiar to baggage personnel. If you're using a design tool like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Canva (which offers free templates), create a document matching your tag dimensions. Set up text boxes for each information segment, positioning them strategically on the page. Your name should use a font size between 14 and 18 points so it's clearly visible from a distance. Booking reference and cabin numbers can be slightly smaller, between 12 and 14 points.
Font selection matters more than many people realize. Sans-serif fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Calibri are easier to read quickly than decorative fonts. Avoid scripts or ornate typefaces for the essential information, as baggage handlers need to read your tags in seconds while moving quickly through the boarding area. You can use decorative fonts for optional elements like a personal design element or cruise date, but keep critical information in clear, standard fonts. Use dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background to maximize contrast and readability.
Before printing, consider adding a color background or border to make your tags distinctive and visually appealing. Many cruisers choose colors that coordinate with their luggage or personal style. You might include a small Royal Caribbean logo image (which you can find through a standard image search) or a simple cruise-themed graphic like an anchor or wave. However, remember that decorative elements should occupy no more than 25 percent of the tag's space. The bulk of your tag must contain clear, readable information.
Once your design is complete, print a test version on regular paper first. Examine the printout to verify text size, readability, and overall layout. Make any adjustments to font sizes or spacing before printing on cardstock. This test print prevents wasting expensive cardstock if you discover the design needs refinement. After confirming your design works well, print your tags on cardstock. Most home printers handle cardstock adequately,
