Understanding Earwax: What It Is and Why Your Body Makes It
Earwax, medically known as cerumen, is a natural substance your body produces inside the ear canal. Contrary to popular belief, earwax is not a sign of poor hygiene. Instead, it serves important protective functions. Your ear canal contains glands that secrete this waxy substance, which is made up of oils, sweat, dead skin cells, and hair.

The primary role of earwax is to protect and lubricate the ear canal. It acts as a barrier against bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that could cause infections. Earwax also traps dust and other foreign particles before they can reach the delicate eardrum. Without earwax, your ears would feel dry, itchy, and uncomfortable. In fact, some people who have conditions that prevent earwax production often experience chronic ear problems.
Most people produce the right amount of earwax naturally, and it typically works its way out of the ear on its own through a self-cleaning process. As your jaw moves during chewing and talking, it helps move earwax from deep in the canal toward the outer ear. This process usually takes a few weeks. However, some people produce more earwax than others, and certain factors can interfere with this natural removal process.
Research shows that earwax buildup affects approximately 1 in 20 people overall, but rates are higher in older adults and people who wear hearing aids. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, cerumen impaction (excessive earwax buildup) is responsible for about 12 million doctor visits annually in the United States. Understanding what earwax does and how your body manages it is the first step toward maintaining healthy ears.
Practical Takeaway: Earwax is a normal, healthy part of ear function. Most earwax removes itself without intervention. You do not need to remove earwax unless it is causing symptoms.
Common Causes of Earwax Buildup
While earwax is normal, certain conditions and habits can cause it to accumulate in the ear canal. Knowing these causes can help you understand whether you might be at higher risk for buildup and what lifestyle factors you can adjust.

One major cause of earwax accumulation is using cotton swabs or other objects to clean the ear canal. This is one of the most common mistakes people make. When you insert a cotton swab into your ear, you often push earwax deeper into the canal rather than removing it. The ear canal is sensitive and curved, making it difficult to safely clean with objects. Studies have shown that cotton swab use is the leading cause of earwax impaction in people who otherwise produce normal amounts of earwax. Even though the impulse to clean your ears feels natural, inserting objects into the ear canal typically worsens the problem.
Hearing aids and earbuds are another significant cause of earwax buildup. These devices block the ear canal and prevent the natural outward movement of earwax. People who wear hearing aids report higher rates of cerumen impaction. The constant presence of these devices also stimulates the ear canal, which can trigger increased earwax production in some individuals.
Narrow or hairy ear canals can make it harder for earwax to move outward naturally. Some people are born with narrower ear canals or have particularly hairy ear canals, which can trap earwax more easily. Age also plays a role—older adults tend to have drier skin and may produce earwax that is drier and harder, making it more likely to accumulate.
Other contributing factors include putting water in your ears during swimming or bathing without proper drying, using certain hearing protection equipment, or having skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis that affect the ear canal. Some medications can also change earwax consistency, making accumulation more likely.
Practical Takeaway: Avoid inserting objects into your ear canal. If you wear hearing aids or earbuds regularly, you may need to monitor for signs of buildup more carefully.
Safe At-Home Methods for Earwax Management
If you suspect earwax buildup but do not have severe symptoms, there are several safe methods you can try at home to manage the situation. These approaches work with your body's natural processes rather than against them.

One widely used method involves using over-the-counter earwax removal drops. These products typically contain mineral oil, glycerin, carbamide peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide. The drops soften earwax, making it easier for your body to naturally expel it. To use these drops correctly, tilt your head to the side, pull your outer ear slightly to open the canal, and apply the recommended number of drops. Keep your head tilted for several minutes to allow the liquid to reach the earwax. Many people use these drops for 3-5 days before the earwax begins to come out. Over-the-counter drops are generally safe for most people, but you should not use them if you have a perforated eardrum or tubes in your ears.
Warm water irrigation is another at-home option, though it requires care. Some people use a rubber bulb syringe to gently flush warm water into the ear canal. The warmth helps soften the earwax while the gentle water pressure encourages it outward. However, water can go where it should not, so this method requires caution. Never use high pressure or hot water, as either can damage your eardrum.
Keeping your ears dry is important for preventing buildup. After swimming or bathing, dry your outer ears with a towel. If water gets trapped in your ear, you can tilt your head to the side and gently pull your ear to help it drain. Some people use a hair dryer on the lowest setting held at a distance from the ear.
You should avoid inserting anything into your ear canal, including cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other objects. If you feel itching or need to clean your ears, wipe only the outer ear with a damp cloth. Your ear canal is self-cleaning and does not need manual cleaning from inside.
Practical Takeaway: Over-the-counter drops and gentle water irrigation are safe first-line approaches. Never insert objects into your ear canal, and avoid pushing earwax deeper.
Signs You Should See a Doctor About Earwax
While earwax buildup often resolves on its own or with at-home care, certain situations require professional evaluation. Knowing when to contact a healthcare provider helps prevent complications and addresses underlying problems that might be causing excessive buildup.

You should see a doctor if you experience hearing loss related to earwax buildup. Earwax can block sound from reaching your eardrum, causing temporary hearing problems. This type of hearing loss typically improves once the earwax is removed, distinguishing it from other hearing issues. If you notice sudden or progressive hearing loss, a doctor can determine whether earwax is responsible.
Ear pain or discomfort is another reason to seek professional care. While earwax buildup itself is not usually painful, impacted earwax can create pressure that causes pain or a feeling of fullness in the ear. Additionally, if you have pain, it might indicate an infection or another ear problem rather than earwax alone. A healthcare provider can examine your ear and identify the actual cause.
Tinnitus—ringing, buzzing, or other noises in your ear—can sometimes be related to earwax impaction. If you develop new tinnitus symptoms, seeing a doctor helps determine the cause. Once earwax is professionally removed, tinnitus related to impaction typically stops.
If you have had multiple episodes of earwax buildup, your doctor may recommend regular professional cleanings or specific preventive strategies. People who wear hearing aids, use earbuds frequently, or have narrow ear canals may benefit from periodic professional removal rather than managing it at home.
You should also see a doctor if at-home treatments have not worked after one to two weeks of use. Professional removal by an audiologist or otolaryngologist uses specialized tools like curettes or suction devices that safely remove impacted earwax without pushing it deeper. Some doctors use ceruminolytic agents (drops designed to dissolve earwax) followed by irrigation.
