Understanding COVID-19 Testing Options
COVID-19 testing has become a routine part of healthcare in the United States. Multiple types of tests are available, each serving different purposes and offering different levels of accuracy. Understanding the differences between these tests helps you choose the right option for your situation.

The main categories of COVID-19 tests include molecular tests (also called RT-PCR tests), antigen tests, and antibody tests. Molecular tests are considered the gold standard for detecting active COVID-19 infection. These tests work by identifying the virus's genetic material in samples collected from your nose or throat. According to the CDC, molecular tests have a sensitivity rate of 95% or higher, meaning they correctly identify most people who are actually infected. These tests typically require laboratory processing, so results usually come back within 24 to 48 hours, though some facilities offer faster turnaround times.
Antigen tests, sometimes called rapid tests, can deliver results in 15 to 30 minutes. These tests detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus. While faster than molecular tests, antigen tests are somewhat less sensitive. Studies show antigen tests correctly identify 80% to 95% of people with active infections, depending on the test brand and how it's performed. A negative antigen test result may need confirmation with a molecular test, particularly if you have symptoms or recent exposure to COVID-19.
Antibody tests (also called serology tests) detect immune responses your body creates after infection or vaccination. These tests show whether you've had COVID-19 in the past, but they don't diagnose current infection. Antibody tests are less commonly used for diagnosis and more often used for research or to understand past exposure.
Practical takeaway: If you have symptoms or recent exposure to COVID-19, request a molecular or antigen test. If you need results quickly for travel or other time-sensitive reasons, ask about rapid antigen testing availability.
Finding Testing Locations Near You
Numerous resources exist to help you locate COVID-19 testing sites in your area. The most direct approach is to use the resources offered by federal health agencies, which maintain databases of testing locations across the country.

The CDC website includes a testing locator tool at COVID.gov/tests. This tool allows you to enter your ZIP code and see available testing options within your area. The results typically show urgent care centers, pharmacies, community health centers, and hospital-based testing sites. The tool also provides information about whether appointments are required and whether the site offers walk-in testing.
Your state health department maintains its own testing location directory. You can find your state health department's website by searching "[Your State Name] Department of Health COVID-19 testing." State-level resources often include additional details specific to your region, such as mobile testing units, pop-up testing events, or special programs for specific populations.
Local resources also play an important role. Many county health departments operate testing facilities or maintain lists of approved testing providers. City health departments often have similar resources. Calling your primary care doctor's office is also worthwhile—many medical practices offer testing on-site or can refer you to nearby testing options.
Major pharmacy chains including CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart operate testing programs. You can visit their websites directly to schedule appointments or check availability. Many of these chains offer free or low-cost testing. Some pharmacies provide rapid antigen tests while others offer molecular tests with laboratory processing.
Community health centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) provide testing regardless of your ability to pay. These centers are located throughout the country and serve patients of all insurance statuses. You can find FQHCs near you through the Health Resources and Services Administration database at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov.
Practical takeaway: Start with COVID.gov/tests or your state health department website. If you have a primary care doctor, call their office first—they often have the fastest way to connect you with testing.
Preparing for Your Test Appointment
Whether you're planning a test at a drive-through facility, pharmacy, or clinic, preparing properly helps ensure accuracy and efficiency. A few simple steps can make the testing experience smoother.

Before your appointment, gather information about what to bring. Most testing sites require a valid photo ID and insurance card (if you have one), though testing should not be denied if you lack insurance. Some sites ask you to complete intake forms online before arrival, which speeds up the process. Check your confirmation email or the testing site's website for specific instructions about what documentation to have ready.
Timing matters when preparing for a test. If you're getting tested because you have symptoms, the test is most accurate within the first five to eight days of symptom onset. If you had a known exposure to COVID-19, testing is most accurate five days or more after exposure. Testing too early after exposure may produce a false negative result.
Consider what you eat or drink before testing. For nasal swab tests, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment. This prevents interference with the sample. For throat swab tests, similar precautions apply. For molecular tests that use saliva collection, you may need to avoid food, drink, and tobacco for 30 minutes to an hour before providing your sample. The testing site's instructions will specify any requirements for your particular test type.
Understand what happens during the test itself. For nasal swab tests, a healthcare worker will insert a soft-tipped swab into your nostril and rotate it gently. This may feel uncomfortable but should not cause pain. The swab is then placed in a collection tube. The entire process usually takes less than one minute. For saliva tests, you'll spit into a collection cup—no swab required. Different test types have slightly different collection methods, so ask the healthcare worker to explain the process if you're uncertain.
Know when to expect results. Rapid antigen tests provide results within 15 to 30 minutes, often while you wait. Molecular tests may take 24 to 48 hours or longer, depending on laboratory processing capacity. Some testing sites provide results by phone or text message, while others give you a printed or digital result slip.
Practical takeaway: Bring a photo ID, check for pre-appointment forms online, and avoid eating or drinking for 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment to ensure an accurate test.
Understanding Your Test Results
Reading and interpreting COVID-19 test results is straightforward once you understand what each result means. Knowing how to respond to your results helps you make informed decisions about your health and the health of those around you.

A positive test result means the test detected COVID-19 virus or viral genetic material in your sample. If you receive a positive result on a rapid antigen test, this is generally considered reliable, particularly if you have symptoms. However, if you tested positive on a rapid test but have no symptoms, some healthcare providers recommend confirming with a molecular test. A positive molecular test is definitive—you have COVID-19 infection.
If you test positive, CDC guidance suggests isolating from others, even in your home if possible. This typically means staying in a separate room and using a separate bathroom if available. Testing has shown that people are most contagious in the first five days after symptom onset or after a positive test if you have no symptoms. After five days, if your symptoms are improving and you don't have a fever, you can resume normal activities but should wear a mask around others for the following five days. People who are severely ill or have weakened immune systems may need to isolate for longer.
A negative test result means the test did not detect COVID-19 virus in your sample. This does not necessarily mean you don't have COVID-19. A negative test is more reliable if you were tested on a molecular test or if you waited several days after exposure before testing. If you tested negative on an antigen test shortly after exposure or symptom onset, you might still have the virus. Consider retesting after 24 to 48 hours if symptoms develop or if you had a known exposure.
Some tests may return an "inconclusive" or "invalid" result, meaning the test didn't work properly or didn't collect enough sample. This is not a positive or negative result. If you receive an inconclusive result, you should retest, typically at the same facility or another testing location.
Keep your test result documentation. If you tested positive, you may need proof of a positive test for workplace documentation
