Understanding Gold Purity and What the Numbers Mean
Gold is rarely used in pure form for jewelry and most common items because pure gold is too soft and bends easily. Instead, gold is mixed with other metals to make it stronger and more durable. Understanding gold purity helps you know what you actually own and what it might be worth.

Gold purity is measured in karats, a system that divides gold into 24 equal parts. Pure gold is marked as 24 karat (24K), meaning all 24 parts are gold. When you see 18K gold, that means 18 of the 24 parts are gold and 6 parts are other metals like copper or silver. A 14K piece contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. A 10K piece is 10 parts gold and 14 parts other metals.
Another common marking system uses a decimal point to show purity. For example, .999 means the item is 99.9% pure gold, which is essentially the same as 24K. An item marked .750 is 75% pure gold, which equals 18K. The mark .585 represents 58.5% gold content, equal to 14K gold. This decimal system is used internationally and provides precise measurements of gold content.
Common purity levels you'll encounter include:
- 24K or .999 — 99.9% pure gold, very soft, rarely used for jewelry
- 22K or .916 — 91.6% pure gold, used in fine jewelry and coins
- 18K or .750 — 75% pure gold, popular for high-quality jewelry
- 14K or .585 — 58.5% pure gold, common in affordable jewelry
- 10K or .417 — 41.7% pure gold, most affordable, legal minimum in the US
The remaining percentage in lower-karat gold consists of alloy metals. The specific metals used affect the color of the gold. Yellow gold typically contains copper. White gold contains metals like palladium or nickel to create its silvery appearance. Rose gold has copper added, which gives it a pinkish tone. These alloy metals do not add value—only the gold content matters when determining worth.
Practical takeaway: Look for karat or decimal markings on any gold item you own. These stamps tell you the percentage of real gold and help you understand what you're working with before testing.
Identifying Hallmarks and Maker's Marks on Gold Items
Most legitimate gold pieces contain stamps or hallmarks that provide information about their purity, origin, and sometimes the manufacturer. Learning to read these marks is one of the first steps in understanding what you have. These stamps are usually small and can be hard to see, but they contain valuable information.

Hallmarks are official stamps that indicate gold purity and were historically used to guarantee quality. In many countries, hallmarking is required by law for gold jewelry. The most common hallmarks in the United States are the karat marks discussed earlier: 24K, 22K, 18K, 14K, or 10K. Some items also display decimal marks like .999, .916, .750, .585, or .417. These marks must be clearly visible, though they're often stamped inside a ring band or on the clasp of a bracelet or necklace.
Maker's marks or assay office marks appear alongside purity marks and identify where the item was manufactured or assayed. In Europe, hallmarking systems are more standardized and rigorous than in the United States. European hallmarks typically include a purity mark, an assay office mark, and a date mark. For example, a piece of British gold jewelry might show several small symbols indicating it was tested at the London Assay Office and is 18K gold. These European marks are registered and can be looked up to determine the exact year of manufacture.
Common hallmark locations on different items:
- Rings — inside the band, sometimes on the underside
- Necklaces and chains — on a tag or directly stamped on the metal
- Bracelets — on the clasp or tag
- Brooches and pins — on the back or clasp
- Watches — inside the case or on the case back
- Coins — sometimes on the edge or surface
Some items lack hallmarks for various reasons. Antique gold items may have worn away their marks over time. Items made before hallmarking became standard may have no marks. Some manufacturers fail to mark items correctly, either by accident or intentionally. Items marked as gold-filled or gold-plated will have different marks than solid gold, often showing GF or GP followed by a fraction indicating the thickness of gold plating.
When examining hallmarks, use a magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe to see them clearly. The stamps should be crisp and well-defined. Blurry, incomplete, or poorly formed marks may indicate a counterfeit item. Take photographs of the marks with your phone's macro or close-up camera setting if you need to research them later or show them to a professional.
Practical takeaway: Before performing any tests, carefully examine your gold item with magnification and document any hallmarks you find. These marks often tell you exactly what you're dealing with and may mean no testing is necessary.
The Magnet Test and What It Reveals
The magnet test is one of the simplest and safest home tests for gold. Gold is not magnetic, meaning it will not attract to a magnet. This test works because pure gold and gold alloys used in jewelry are not ferromagnetic materials. However, some of the metals mixed with gold may be slightly magnetic, so this test has limitations and cannot confirm gold purity on its own.

To perform the magnet test, you'll need a strong neodymium magnet, often called a rare-earth magnet. These magnets are much stronger than regular magnets and are inexpensive to purchase online or at hardware stores. They typically cost between $5 and $15 for a set. You can also use a magnet from a magnetic bracelet or a strong magnet salvaged from old electronics, though neodymium magnets work best.
The process is straightforward. Hold the magnet near your gold item without touching it. If the item is truly gold, it should show no attraction to the magnet. The item should not move toward the magnet or stick to it. If the item strongly attracts to the magnet, it likely contains significant amounts of iron or other ferromagnetic metals and is probably not genuine gold.
Important limitations of the magnet test:
- Gold-plated items will pass this test even if the base metal is magnetic
- Some low-karat gold alloys may show slight magnetic properties
- Items with mixed metals may show weak attraction
- The test cannot determine purity levels
- The test cannot detect gold-plated brass or copper
The magnet test is most useful for eliminating items that are clearly not gold. If an item strongly attracts to a magnet, you can be fairly confident it's not solid gold. However, if the item shows no magnetic attraction, this doesn't prove it's gold—it only means it's consistent with being gold or gold-plated. You'll need additional tests to confirm genuine gold and determine its purity.
A negative result (no attraction) means the test was inconclusive for purity but doesn't rule out the item being counterfeit. For example, items made from gold-plated lead, tungsten, or other non-magnetic metals will pass the magnet test despite being fakes. This is why the magnet test works best when combined with other testing methods.
Practical takeaway: Use the magnet test as your first screening tool to rule out obviously fake items, but understand it cannot confirm genuine gold or its purity level. A magnet showing no effect means you should proceed with additional tests.
