Understanding Illinois Driver License Renewal Basics
An Illinois driver license is a state-issued identification document that shows you are allowed to drive on public roads. The Illinois Secretary of State's office manages all driver licenses in the state. Like most states, Illinois requires driver licenses to be renewed periodically to ensure that driver information stays current and that licenses remain valid.

In Illinois, the renewal timeline depends on your age and license type. Drivers aged 21 and older typically renew their license every four years. However, drivers aged 18 to 20 renew every two years. Senior drivers aged 81 and older renew every year, and drivers aged 75 to 80 renew every two years. These timeframes help the Secretary of State keep records accurate and ensure that all drivers have current information on file.
Your license will display an expiration date printed on the front. This date tells you when your license is no longer valid for driving. Once your license expires, you cannot legally operate a vehicle in Illinois or most other states. However, Illinois does provide a grace period for renewals in some circumstances.
The state processes thousands of driver license transactions each month. In fiscal year 2022, the Illinois Secretary of State reported handling over 2.8 million driver license transactions across all its offices and services. This high volume means that understanding the renewal process beforehand can help you move through it more smoothly.
Practical takeaway: Mark your license expiration date on a calendar several months ahead of time. Check the front of your current license to find this date. Knowing when renewal is due helps you plan ahead and avoid driving with an expired license.
Renewal Options Available in Illinois
Illinois offers multiple ways to renew your driver license, and the option available to you depends on several factors. The state recognizes that different drivers have different needs and schedules, so it provides in-person renewal at branch offices, mail-based renewal for certain drivers, and online renewal for those who are eligible under specific conditions.

In-person renewal at a Secretary of State driver services facility remains the most common method. Illinois operates more than 125 driver services facilities across the state, located in cities, suburbs, and rural areas. When you visit a facility in person, a staff member will verify your identity, check your vision, and process your renewal request. This option works for almost all drivers and ensures immediate processing in most cases. Facilities typically operate Monday through Friday during business hours, with some locations offering Saturday hours.
Mail-based renewal is available for drivers who meet certain requirements. Generally, if your license is not suspended or revoked and you have no violations or failures on your driving record, you may be able to renew by mail. When renewing by mail, you send your current license and completed renewal form to the Secretary of State, along with the renewal fee. Processing times vary but typically take two to three weeks from the date the Secretary of State receives your materials. This option works well for drivers with clean records who do not need to update their information significantly.
Online renewal through the Illinois Secretary of State website is another option for drivers meeting specific criteria. Drivers using online renewal must have a valid email address and access to a computer or mobile device. The online process typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. However, not all drivers can renew online—for example, drivers who need to renew after suspension or who have had address changes may need to visit in person or use mail renewal.
Practical takeaway: Before choosing a renewal method, review your driving record and check whether your license status allows for mail or online renewal. Visit the Illinois Secretary of State website or call your local driver services facility to confirm which methods are available for your specific situation.
Documents and Information You Will Need
Successful driver license renewal requires you to have specific documents and information ready before you begin the process. Gathering these materials ahead of time speeds up the renewal and prevents delays. The exact documents needed may vary slightly depending on whether you renew in person, by mail, or online, but core requirements remain consistent.

Your current Illinois driver license is essential. This document serves as proof of your identity and contains information the Secretary of State has on file about you. If your current license is lost, stolen, or too damaged to use, you will need to request a replacement or duplicate license, which involves a different process than renewal.
Proof of identity is required for renewal. The Secretary of State accepts several forms of identification as proof, including a U.S. passport, passport card, trusted traveler card (such as NEXUS or Global Entry), military ID, or state ID from another state. For in-person renewal, you will need to show this document to a staff member. For mail or online renewal, you may need to upload an image or provide information from the document.
Proof of Illinois residency is necessary to verify where you live. Acceptable documents include a recent utility bill, lease or mortgage statement, bank statement, government-issued mail, or property tax bill. These documents typically should be current within the last 60 days. If you have moved recently, make sure your proof of residency matches your current address.
Your Social Security number is required for the renewal process. This number helps the Secretary of State verify your identity and maintain accurate records. You will need to provide this number regardless of which renewal method you use.
If you have changed your name since your last license was issued—for example, due to marriage or legal name change—you will need documentation of the name change. This might include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order for legal name change. Bring the original document or a certified copy.
Payment for the renewal fee is required. The cost of renewing an Illinois driver license varies depending on the type of license and your age. As of 2024, renewal fees generally range from $5 to $30. Payment methods accepted vary by renewal type—in-person renewals accept cash, check, or card; mail renewals typically accept check or money order; online renewals usually accept credit or debit card.
Practical takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents and gather them together at least one week before you plan to renew. Double-check the Secretary of State website or call ahead to confirm which specific documents are needed for your renewal method, as requirements can change.
Step-by-Step Process for In-Person Renewal
Renewing your driver license in person at an Illinois Secretary of State driver services facility involves several steps. Understanding this process beforehand helps you know what to expect and reduces the time spent waiting.

The first step is locating and visiting a driver services facility near you. Illinois maintains a facility locator tool on the Secretary of State website that shows all branch locations, hours of operation, and contact information. Some facilities accept walk-ins, while others require appointments or use ticket systems where you take a number upon arrival. Check your local facility's policy before visiting. Arriving early in the day, typically when the facility first opens, generally means shorter wait times.
When you arrive at the facility, check in with the front desk. Provide your name and explain that you are renewing your driver license. The staff member will direct you to the appropriate line or service window. Some facilities have different lines for different services, so make sure you are in the renewal line. You may receive a ticket with a number that determines when you will be called for service.
When called to a service window, have all your documents and information ready to present. The staff member will ask you to provide proof of identity and proof of residency. They will verify that the information on your current license matches your documents. If you have changed your name or address, let the staff member know so they can update your information.
Next, the staff member will ask you to take a vision test. This test typically involves reading letters or numbers on a chart from a certain distance. You do not need to study for this test—it simply checks that your vision meets minimum standards for safe driving. If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses to drive, wear them during the test.
You will then have your photograph taken for the new license. The staff member will provide instructions about positioning and facial expression. Avoid wearing hats, sunglasses, or items that obscure your face. The photo will appear on your new license and serve as your identification for the next four years (or two years if you are under 21).
After these steps, you will pay the renewal fee. The staff member will tell you the exact amount owed and accept your payment. Ask for a receipt to document the transaction.
Finally, the staff member will provide
