Understanding Your Mattress Disposal Options
When a mattress reaches the end of its life, disposal can feel overwhelming. Most people don't realize they have several options beyond simply throwing it in the trash. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mattresses make up a significant portion of bulky waste in landfills, with approximately 40 million mattresses discarded annually in the United States. Each mattress typically weighs between 80 and 150 pounds and takes up considerable space in waste facilities.

Understanding your options helps you make an informed decision based on your situation, location, and resources. Different communities have different rules about how mattresses must be handled. Some areas prohibit mattresses in regular trash collection. Others have specific programs designed to handle them. The path you choose depends on whether your mattress is still usable, your local regulations, your budget, and your physical ability to transport the mattress.
Before deciding on a disposal method, consider the mattress's condition. A mattress that still has structural integrity and is relatively clean might be donated. A mattress with stains, rips, or structural damage may need to go to a landfill or recycling facility. Some mattresses contain valuable materials like steel springs and foam that can be recovered and reused in manufacturing. Understanding what's in your mattress and its current state helps determine the best path forward.
Practical Takeaway: Before disposing of your mattress, assess its condition and research what your local waste management department allows. Call your city or county waste services to learn about specific rules in your area—many communities have restrictions on where mattresses can go.
Donation Centers and Charities That Accept Mattresses
Donating a mattress is often the most rewarding disposal option when the mattress is still in decent condition. A mattress with minor wear, no bed bugs, and without significant stains or odors can bring value to someone who needs it. Organizations that accept used mattresses include the Salvation Army, Goodwill, local homeless shelters, women's shelters, furniture banks, and various community nonprofits. The Furniture Bank Network represents over 100 organizations across the United States that specifically collect and distribute used furniture, including mattresses, to people in need.

Homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters frequently need mattresses. These organizations serve individuals and families experiencing crisis situations and often operate with limited budgets. Reaching out to shelters in your area directly can tell you whether they accept mattresses and what condition requirements they have. Churches and religious organizations sometimes run community assistance programs that distribute furniture. Faith-based charities may be particularly interested in helping people furnish their first homes after homelessness or other hardships.
Furniture banks operate in many cities specifically to help people transitioning out of homelessness or coming through job loss. These organizations collect donated furniture and household items and distribute them to individuals and families rebuilding their lives. They typically have specific cleanliness standards but are often more flexible than retail donation centers. Some furniture banks have pickup services for large items like mattresses, while others require drop-off. The Furniture Bank Network website contains a locator tool showing participating organizations by state and region.
Before donating, contact the organization to confirm they accept mattresses. Ask about their condition standards, delivery options, and whether they handle pickup. Some charities cannot accept mattresses with any visible damage due to storage and safety concerns. Others have specific hygiene requirements. Getting these details beforehand prevents disappointment and wasted trips.
Practical Takeaway: Call local nonprofits, shelters, and charities in your area to ask if they accept mattress donations. Ask specifically about their condition requirements and whether they offer pickup services. Organizations like the Salvation Army and Goodwill have location finders on their websites to help you locate nearby branches.
Mattress Recycling and Recovery Programs
Mattress recycling breaks down used mattresses into component materials that manufacturers can use again. A standard mattress contains materials of genuine value: steel springs, foam padding, cotton and polyester batting, and wood frames. When properly recycled, these materials can become new carpet padding, insulation, steel products, and filling for other goods. According to the Mattress Recycling Council, which operates recycling programs in multiple states, a single mattress can yield approximately 80 pounds of recoverable materials.

Several states have implemented mattress recycling stewardship programs funded by manufacturers. These programs exist in California, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. In these states, mattress manufacturers pay into programs that fund collection and recycling. Residents in these states often have access to drop-off locations or pickup services at reduced cost or for a small fee. The Mattress Recycling Council maintains a website with a locator tool showing drop-off sites and pickup options by state and zip code.
In states without formal stewardship programs, independent recycling facilities may accept mattresses. These businesses typically charge a fee ranging from $10 to $50 per mattress, depending on local market conditions and facility location. Urban areas generally have more recycling options than rural regions. Searching online for "mattress recycling near me" or contacting your local waste management authority can reveal what facilities operate in your area. Some furniture retailers that sell new mattresses also have recycling programs and may accept old mattresses, sometimes at a discount if you purchase a new one.
The recycling process typically involves removing non-recyclable components like plastic coverings, then running the mattress through industrial equipment that separates springs, foam, and fabric. Each component then goes to appropriate facilities for reprocessing. This diverts mattresses from landfills and returns valuable materials to manufacturing cycles.
Practical Takeaway: Visit the Mattress Recycling Council website or search for "mattress recycling [your state]" to learn what programs operate in your area. If your state has a stewardship program, you may have free or low-cost drop-off options. Contact facilities beforehand to confirm they accept residential mattresses and learn about any fees.
Bulk Trash Collection and Curbside Pickup Services
Many cities offer bulk item collection as part of their regular waste services. These programs allow residents to place large items like mattresses at the curb on designated collection days. The mattress gets picked up by a special collection truck and transported to a landfill or processing facility. This service is often included in standard trash collection fees or available for a nominal additional cost. Some cities include a certain number of bulk collection days per year (often 2-4) as part of basic service, while others charge per pickup.

To use curbside bulk collection, contact your local waste management department or check your trash collection provider's website. They'll tell you the rules for placing items, how much notice you need to give, and whether your address is serviced. Rules vary significantly by location. Some require that bulky items be placed several feet from the regular trash bin. Others require that you call in advance and receive a specific pickup date. Many programs have restrictions on how many items can be placed at once. Some cities limit bulk pickups to once or twice per year per household.
The advantage of curbside pickup is convenience—you don't have to transport the mattress anywhere. The disadvantage is that your mattress goes directly to a landfill rather than being reused or recycled. If you live in an apartment or managed community, ask your property manager whether they have arrangements with waste haulers that include bulk item removal. Some apartment complexes include mattress disposal in their lease agreements or maintenance fees.
Private bulk hauling services offer another option if your municipality doesn't provide curbside collection. Companies like Junk King, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, and local independent haulers will pick up mattresses and other bulky items for a fee. Prices typically range from $50 to $150 depending on location and the number of items. These services handle the entire process—you don't have to load the truck. Many of these companies also attempt to divert items from landfills when possible, donating reusable items and recycling materials.
Practical Takeaway: Call your trash collection provider or visit their website to learn about bulk pickup options and fees. If curbside collection is available, find out the specific rules for your address and required notice period. If not available, get quotes from 2-3 local junk hauling services before deciding.
