Understanding PS4 Storage and Why Removing Apps Matters
The PlayStation 4 console comes with a built-in hard drive that stores your games, apps, and saved data. Most standard PS4 models include 500GB of storage space, while the PS4 Pro offers 1TB. However, this storage fills up quickly. A single modern game can take anywhere from 50GB to 150GB of space. For example, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare requires approximately 175GB, while Elden Ring needs about 60GB. As your library grows, you'll eventually need to remove titles you no longer play to make room for new content.

Understanding the difference between two removal methods is important before you start. When you delete an app or game from your PS4, you remove the files from your console's hard drive. However, your purchase remains tied to your PlayStation Network account. This means you can reinstall any game you've deleted whenever you want, provided you still own the license. Your saved game data can be preserved separately, so deleting a game doesn't necessarily erase your progress. This distinction matters because it means you won't lose access to content you've bought.
Storage management becomes increasingly important as you use your PS4 over time. The console performs better when your hard drive isn't completely full. When storage space drops below 100GB, your system may slow down, games may take longer to load, and you might experience performance issues. Some games won't install if insufficient space remains, even if the game itself is smaller than your available storage. PlayStation recommends keeping at least 100GB free for optimal performance.
Practical takeaway: Check your current storage by going to Settings, then System, then Storage. This shows you exactly how much space you've used and how much remains available. If you're using more than 75% of your total storage, you should consider removing apps or games you don't actively use.
How to Delete Games and Apps from Your PS4 Home Screen
The most straightforward method for removing games and apps involves using your PS4 home screen. Start by navigating to the game or app you want to delete using your controller. Highlight the title until it's selected on your screen. Once selected, press the Options button on your controller—this is the button with three horizontal lines located to the right of the touchpad. A menu will appear with several choices.

From the options menu that appears, look for "Delete" at the bottom of the list. Select this option, and your PS4 will ask you to confirm that you want to remove the application. This confirmation step prevents accidental deletions. Once you confirm, the console will begin removing the files. The time this takes depends on the app's size. Small apps may take just a few seconds, while large games can take a minute or two. You'll see a progress indicator on your screen showing the deletion status.
After deletion completes, the game or app will no longer appear on your home screen or in your library. However, you'll still own the title. If you go to your Profile and check your Library section, you'll see all games you've purchased or acquired, including the ones you've deleted. Games marked as deleted will show an option to reinstall them. This reinstallation process is identical to the initial installation—your console connects to the PlayStation Network and re-downloads the files.
It's worth noting that deleting from the home screen doesn't delete your saved data by default. Your game saves remain on the console unless you specifically delete them through the save data management settings. This is one advantage of this removal method—you can delete a game to free space and keep your progress intact for when you reinstall it later.
Practical takeaway: Practice this deletion process with a small app first to become familiar with the steps. This way, when you need to make space urgently, you'll already know exactly where to navigate and what to expect.
Using the Storage Management System to Remove Multiple Items
PS4 includes a dedicated storage management system that gives you a detailed view of what's taking up space on your console. To access this feature, go to Settings from your home screen. Select System, then choose Storage. This screen displays your total storage capacity and how much you're currently using. You'll see a percentage and the actual gigabytes used and available.

From the Storage screen, you can select "Applications" to view a list of every game and app installed on your console, sorted by size. This list shows the largest items first, making it obvious which games are consuming the most storage space. This sorting is particularly useful when you're trying to decide what to delete. For instance, you might see that a game you rarely play occupies 120GB while several smaller games together use only 50GB. The applications list makes these comparisons clear.
To delete something from this list, highlight the title and press the Options button again. The same delete menu appears, allowing you to remove the selected item. However, the storage management system offers an advantage over home screen deletion—you can see exactly how much space each item occupies before deciding to delete it. Some players find this method more organized, especially when managing large libraries of 50+ games.
The storage screen also displays how much space is reserved by your system. PS4 reserves approximately 100GB for system functions and performance optimization. This is why a 500GB PS4 doesn't actually give you 500GB of usable space—the system keeps about 100GB for itself, leaving roughly 400GB for your games and apps. Understanding this helps explain why your available storage seems lower than expected.
Practical takeaway: Use the storage management system monthly to review what's installed. Note which games you haven't played in the past month and consider whether you want to keep them. Create a mental list of games you're certain you won't play soon, then delete those to free up the most space with minimal regret.
Managing Saved Data Separately from Game Installation
A crucial feature of PS4 is the ability to manage saved data independently from game files. When you delete a game, your saved data doesn't automatically delete along with it. This means you can remove a game to free storage space while preserving your progress, achievements, and game settings. Later, when you reinstall the game, you can resume exactly where you left off.

To access your saved data management, go to Settings, then Application Saved Data Management. Here you'll see two options: "Saved Data in System Storage" and "Uploads to Online Storage." The first shows all your save files stored on your PS4 console. The second shows saves you've backed up to PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage, which provides automatic cloud backup for subscribers.
Within Saved Data Management, you can view individual save files for each game. Each game typically creates multiple save files automatically—one main save, plus backups and auto-saves from different play sessions. You can delete specific save files if you want to free additional space, though this is usually unnecessary since save files are quite small compared to the game installations themselves. For example, a game save might be 5-50MB, while the game itself might be 50-150GB.
If you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber, your save data is automatically backed up to the cloud every time you play. This means even if you delete a save from your console, you can restore it from the cloud backup later. To restore a cloud save, go to the same Saved Data Management menu and select "Uploads to Online Storage." Find the game, and you'll see an option to download the save back to your console. This feature is particularly valuable if you accidentally delete an important save or if your console's hard drive fails.
Practical takeaway: Before deleting a game you've invested significant time in, confirm that your save data has been backed up. For PlayStation Plus members, this happens automatically. For those without Plus, consider manually checking that saves exist by looking in Saved Data Management before removing the game.
Reinstalling Games and Apps After Deletion
Reinstalling a game you've previously deleted is straightforward. The first method is to find the game in your Library. Press the PS button on your controller to go to your profile, then select "Your Collection" or "Library." This displays all games and apps you own, including deleted ones. Games you've removed will typically show a "Purchased" label or have a slightly different appearance than installed games. Select the game you want to reinstall, then press the Options button and choose "Install" or "Add to Library."
