Understanding Texas Driver's License Renewal Requirements
A Texas driver's license typically remains valid for six years for most drivers. When your license approaches expiration, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will mail you a notice about renewal. Understanding what documents you'll need before you begin the renewal process can help you prepare and gather materials ahead of time.

Texas has specific rules about which documents are acceptable for proving your identity, residency, and Social Security number. These requirements exist to verify that you are who you say you are and to maintain accurate records. The state recognizes various types of documents for each category, which gives you flexibility in choosing what to present.
If you're renewing a standard driver's license (not a REAL ID compliant license), the document requirements differ slightly from REAL ID renewals. Standard renewals focus on verifying your identity and current address, while REAL ID renewals require additional proof of citizenship or legal presence in the United States. Understanding these differences helps you know exactly what to bring to your appointment.
Texas law requires that all documents presented during renewal be genuine and valid. Expired documents may or may not be acceptable depending on the document type. The DPS website maintains current information about which documents meet renewal standards, and you can review this information before visiting a license office.
Takeaway: Begin gathering your documents at least two weeks before your renewal appointment. Create a checklist based on whether you're renewing a standard license or applying for REAL ID compliance, and verify that all documents are current and authentic.
Identity Documents You Can Use for Renewal
To renew your Texas driver's license, you must provide one document that establishes your identity. Texas accepts many forms of identity documentation, and most people can choose from several options. The most common identity documents include a valid U.S. passport, a birth certificate, a certificate of U.S. citizenship, or a state-issued identification card.

If you're renewing a standard driver's license (not REAL ID), a certified copy of your birth certificate works well for establishing identity. The birth certificate should be an official copy with a raised seal or certification mark, not a photocopy. You can obtain certified birth certificates from the Texas Vital Statistics unit or the county where you were born. Processing times for certified documents typically range from two to four weeks.
A U.S. passport is another strong identity document that Texas DPS accepts. Passports serve as proof of both identity and U.S. citizenship, making them valuable documents for REAL ID renewals. If you hold a passport, bringing it to your renewal appointment eliminates the need to provide separate citizenship documentation.
Other acceptable identity documents include military discharge papers (form DD-214), a consular report of birth abroad, a naturalization certificate, or certain tribal documents that establish identity. Texas also recognizes valid foreign passports paired with visa documentation, though this combination is used less frequently for standard renewals.
Some people have difficulty locating their original identity documents. If your birth certificate is lost or you cannot obtain it quickly, ask the DPS office staff about alternative documents during your appointment. The office staff can inform you about other options based on your specific situation, though they cannot make final decisions about document acceptance.
Takeaway: Gather your primary identity document at least one month before your renewal appointment if you need to order a certified birth certificate. Keep identity documents in a safe, easily accessible location.
Proof of Residency Documents Required
Texas requires you to show proof that you currently live at the address you're providing on your driver's license. This residency requirement exists to ensure that license records match where people actually reside. You must bring one document showing your name and current residential address. The address on your identity document (like your birth certificate) does not need to match your current address—that's why separate residency proof is required.

Utility bills are the most straightforward residency documents. Accepted utility bills include those from electric, gas, water, trash service, or internet providers. The bill should display your name and current address, and it should be dated within the last 60 days. If your utility bill shows only a business name or your roommate's name, it won't work—the document must show your name specifically.
Lease agreements or property deeds work well for proving residency. A lease agreement should show your name as the tenant, the property address, and should be a current lease (not expired). Property deeds showing your name as owner, along with the property address, also satisfy residency requirements. You don't need a certified copy—an original or clear photocopy works.
Additional residency documents include bank or credit card statements showing your name and address (dated within 60 days), insurance documents for home or renter's insurance, property tax statements, or mortgage statements. School enrollment documents for dependent children may also work. Government-issued documents showing your address, such as voter registration cards or property tax certificates, are also acceptable.
Some people live with family or friends and lack documents in their own name. In these situations, you might provide a signed letter from the property owner or lessee confirming that you live there, along with a utility bill or other document in the property owner's name showing the address. The DPS office can discuss alternative arrangements if you're in this situation.
Takeaway: Gather a residency document dated within the last 60 days and ensure it displays your full name exactly as it appears on your identity document. If documents show slightly different name variations, bring multiple documents to clarify.
Social Security Number Verification and Documentation
Texas DPS requires verification of your Social Security number as part of the renewal process. This verification helps prevent identity fraud and ensures accurate record-keeping. You have several options for providing this verification, and you don't necessarily need to bring a physical Social Security card to renew your license.

A Social Security card is the most direct form of verification. If you have your card and it's in good condition, bringing it to your appointment provides clear documentation. However, many people no longer carry their Social Security cards due to identity theft concerns, and DPS understands this.
Alternative documents for Social Security verification include tax return documents (such as a W-2 form or tax return showing your Social Security number), IRS documentation, or W-2 forms from your employer. These documents must show your full name and Social Security number. You can bring recent copies of any of these documents instead of your Social Security card.
If you were born outside the United States and have documentation of your Social Security number from immigration or citizenship records, those documents may also work. Certain government-issued identification documents that display your Social Security number are acceptable, though most modern government IDs no longer print Social Security numbers for security reasons.
The DPS office can verify your Social Security number electronically if you provide permission. During your appointment, staff can check Social Security records directly, which means you may not need to bring a physical document at all. The office will explain your options when you arrive for your renewal appointment.
Takeaway: If you have your Social Security card, bring it for straightforward verification. If you prefer not to carry it, gather a recent tax document or W-2 form showing your number, or be ready to authorize electronic verification at the office.
REAL ID Compliance: Additional Documents Needed
A REAL ID-compliant driver's license requires additional documentation beyond a standard license renewal. REAL ID compliance means your license meets federal security standards set by the Department of Homeland Security. As of May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license is required for federal facilities, military bases, and domestic air travel. If you travel by plane domestically or visit federal buildings, you'll need either a REAL ID license or a passport.

The primary additional requirement for REAL ID is proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence. If your identity document (like a U.S. passport or birth certificate) already proves citizenship, you may not need additional documentation. However, if you're using a birth certificate for identity, you'll also need a separate citizenship document.
Acceptable citizenship documents include a U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, certificate of citizenship, or a consular report of birth abroad. If you hold a passport, it serves double duty—proving both identity and citizenship. Naturalization certificates and citizenship certificates should be official documents with seals or certification marks.
For people with lawful permanent resident status (green card holders), the green card itself often satisfies citizenship requirements for REAL ID
