Understanding Vermont Tax Refund Basics
A tax refund occurs when you pay more in taxes throughout the year than you actually owe. The Vermont Department of Taxes holds onto that extra money until you file your tax return, then sends it back to you. This is a straightforward process, but many people don't realize they're overpaying until they file.

Vermont residents who work as employees typically have taxes withheld from their paychecks. Your employer uses a W-4 form to determine how much to withhold based on information you provide. If you claim too many deductions or don't update your W-4 when your life changes, you might have more withheld than necessary. Similarly, self-employed people who make estimated tax payments might overpay if their income changes during the year.
The refund amount depends on several factors: your total income for the year, the number of dependents you claim, deductions you take, tax credits you receive, and how much was actually withheld or paid. For tax year 2023, Vermont's average refund was approximately $1,100, though individual amounts vary significantly based on personal circumstances.
Understanding your refund starts with knowing your filing status, income sources, and what deductions or credits might apply to you. This foundation helps you track your refund accurately and understand where you stand in the tax process. When you file your return, the Vermont Department of Taxes processes it and calculates whether you owe additional taxes or deserve a refund.
Practical Takeaway: Before tracking your refund, gather your pay stubs from 2024 and any 1099 forms if you had other income. These documents show how much was withheld and help you understand why you might be receiving a refund.
Steps for Tracking Your Vermont Tax Refund Online
The Vermont Department of Taxes provides an online refund tracking tool that shows the status of your return after you file. This is the most direct way to monitor your refund progress. To use this tool, you'll need information from your tax return and some basic personal details.

First, visit the Vermont Department of Taxes website at tax.vermont.gov. Look for the "Where's My Refund?" tool, which is typically found on the homepage or in the main menu under taxpayer services. You'll need to enter specific information to access your refund status: your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.), and the exact refund amount you expect to receive.
The online tracker updates regularly as your return moves through different processing stages. When you first check, you might see a status indicating your return was received and is being processed. As days pass, the status updates to show when your return has been accepted by the state, when it's been reviewed, and finally when your refund has been approved and sent out.
Timing matters when using the online tracker. If you file electronically early in the tax season (January or early February), you might receive your refund within two to three weeks. Paper returns take longer—often six to eight weeks. The tracker gives you a realistic sense of where you are in that timeline. During peak tax season, processing takes longer for everyone, so checking the tracker helps manage your expectations.
If you filed jointly with a spouse or partner, either person can check the refund status using their own Social Security number, as long as they know the total refund amount. This allows both filers to stay informed about the status.
Practical Takeaway: Bookmark the Vermont Department of Taxes website and check your refund status once per week rather than daily. Frequent checking won't speed up processing, but weekly checks give you a reliable picture of progress without frustration.
Information About Refund Payment Methods and Timing
Vermont offers different ways to receive your refund, and understanding these options helps you plan your finances. The most common refund method is direct deposit, which transfers money directly into your bank account. This is also the fastest method, typically delivering your refund within two to three weeks of approval if you filed electronically. Direct deposit requires you to provide your bank account number and routing number on your tax return.

Some people prefer receiving a check instead of direct deposit. If you chose the check option when filing, Vermont mails a physical check to your address on file. Paper checks take additional time—typically four to six weeks after approval. The check will have Vermont Department of Taxes information printed on it, along with your name and the refund amount. Make sure your mailing address is current; if you've moved recently, inform the Department of Taxes before filing or update your address immediately after filing.
Another option available to some taxpayers is refund anticipation, though this is less common than it was in previous years. Some tax preparation services offer this option, which provides quick access to part of your refund before the state processes the full amount. However, these services typically charge fees that reduce the amount you ultimately receive.
Timing varies based on several factors beyond your control. If your return contains errors or requires additional review, processing takes longer. Returns claiming certain credits, particularly the Earned Income Tax Credit, may go through additional verification steps that extend processing time by a week or two. Joint returns sometimes take slightly longer than single returns because the Department of Taxes verifies information for both filers.
The time of year you file also affects timing. Returns filed in early January processing much faster than those filed in early April when the Department of Taxes handles peak volume. Filing in February, March, or early April means joining thousands of other Vermonters filing during busy season.
Practical Takeaway: Choose direct deposit to receive your refund faster and reduce the chance of mailing delays or lost checks. If you don't have a bank account, discuss check delivery options with the Department of Taxes.
Troubleshooting Common Refund Tracking Issues
Sometimes the online tracker doesn't show information or the status doesn't change as expected. Understanding common reasons for these situations helps you determine whether to wait or take action. One frequent issue is entering incorrect information when using the online tracker. The system requires exact matching of your Social Security number, filing status, and expected refund amount. Even small errors—like transposing a digit in your SSN or entering a rounded refund amount instead of the exact figure—cause the lookup to fail.

If the tracker says no information is found, double-check your entries. Review your tax return to confirm the exact refund amount. Some people enter approximate amounts and wonder why the system doesn't recognize their return. The tracker requires precision. If you filed with a tax preparation service, contact them to confirm the exact refund amount shown on your submitted return.
Another common situation is when the status bar doesn't change for several weeks. This is often normal during busy season, but it might indicate your return is in a review queue. Returns selected for verification stop updating in the online tracker until the review completes. The Department of Taxes will contact you if they need additional information. Monitor your mail for any letters requesting documentation, and respond promptly if contacted.
If you filed electronically but the tracker doesn't show your return yet, wait several business days. Electronic returns take time to upload and process into the system. If more than a week has passed since you filed and the tracker shows nothing, contact your tax preparation service to confirm the return was successfully transmitted to Vermont.
Some taxpayers experience situations where the tracker shows their return was received and accepted, but then stops updating. This typically means your return is awaiting final approval for refund release. This stage can take several days to a couple of weeks, depending on workload. If the status hasn't changed in three weeks, contact the Department of Taxes with your Social Security number and filing information.
Incorrect direct deposit information causes another category of problems. If you provided the wrong bank account number or routing number on your return, the refund cannot be deposited. The Department of Taxes will attempt to deposit your refund, and if it fails, they'll mail you a check instead. This adds significant time to receiving your money. To prevent this, triple-check banking information before submitting your return.
Practical Takeaway: Save a copy of your filed tax return in a safe place. Having this document lets you verify exact information when using the online tracker and speeds up resolution if issues arise.
