What Is Anemia and How Does It Affect Your Body
Anemia is a medical condition where your blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body. Red blood cells contain a protein called hemoglobin, which picks up oxygen from your lungs and delivers it to every tissue and organ. When you have anemia, either you don't have enough red blood cells, or the red blood cells you have don't work properly. This means less oxygen reaches your organs and tissues, which can make you feel tired, weak, and short of breath.

Your body naturally makes new red blood cells in your bone marrow every day. A healthy red blood cell lives for about 120 days. When your body cannot replace these cells fast enough, or when you lose blood, anemia can develop. According to the World Health Organization, anemia affects more than two billion people worldwide. In the United States, it is one of the most common blood disorders.
Anemia exists on a spectrum. Some people have mild anemia with few noticeable symptoms, while others experience severe anemia that significantly impacts daily life. The severity depends on how low your red blood cell count is and how quickly the condition developed. Your body can sometimes compensate for mild anemia by working harder, which is why some people don't realize they have the condition until blood work reveals it.
Common symptoms include fatigue that doesn't improve with rest, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and headaches. Some people also experience chest pain or rapid heartbeat, especially during physical activity. Symptoms may develop gradually, so you might not notice them at first.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding that anemia is a treatable condition helps you recognize when something might be wrong. If you experience persistent fatigue, unusual weakness, or shortness of breath, talk with a healthcare provider about whether blood work might be helpful. Identifying anemia early often leads to better outcomes.
Iron Deficiency Anemia: The Most Common Type
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia worldwide, affecting approximately 1.62 billion people according to global health data. This condition occurs when your body doesn't have enough iron to make hemoglobin. Iron is a crucial mineral that your body needs to produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Without adequate iron, your bone marrow cannot produce enough healthy red blood cells.

Your body gets iron from the food you eat. Sources include red meat, chicken, fish, beans, lentils, fortified cereals, and dark leafy greens like spinach. Your body also recycles iron from old red blood cells. However, if you lose blood through injury, surgery, or certain medical conditions, you lose iron as well. Women of childbearing age face higher risk because menstruation causes monthly blood loss. Pregnancy also increases iron needs because your blood volume expands to support the developing baby.
Several conditions can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common causes in women. Digestive problems like celiac disease, Crohn's disease, or ulcers can prevent your body from absorbing iron properly. Certain medications, including some blood thinners and acid reflux medicines, can affect iron absorption. People who have had gastrointestinal surgery may also struggle to absorb enough iron. Additionally, vegetarians and vegans need to be more intentional about iron intake since plant-based iron is absorbed less efficiently than iron from meat.
The signs of iron deficiency anemia often develop slowly. Initially, you might just feel more tired than usual. As the condition worsens, you may notice brittle nails, an unusual craving for non-food items like ice or dirt (called pica), frequent infections, or difficulty concentrating. Some people develop a sore or swollen tongue.
Practical Takeaway: If you think iron deficiency might be affecting you, a simple blood test can measure your iron levels. Consider keeping a food diary to see how much iron you're consuming daily. Most adults need 8-18 milligrams of iron daily, depending on age and gender. Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C (like citrus or tomatoes) helps your body absorb iron better.
Other Types of Anemia and Their Causes
While iron deficiency is most common, several other types of anemia exist, each with different causes. Understanding these distinctions helps explain why different people need different treatment approaches. Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia occurs when your body lacks enough B12, a vitamin necessary for making red blood cells. Your body stores B12 from food in your liver, and stores can last several years. However, certain conditions affect absorption. Older adults sometimes struggle to absorb B12 from food because stomach acid naturally decreases with age. People who have had weight loss surgery or digestive disorders like Crohn's disease or celiac disease face higher risk. Vegans and vegetarians must obtain B12 from fortified foods or supplements since this vitamin naturally occurs only in animal products.

Folate deficiency anemia results from insufficient folic acid (vitamin B9), another nutrient needed for red blood cell formation. Leafy greens, legumes, asparagus, and fortified grains contain folate. Pregnant women need extra folate to support fetal development. Certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption, and malabsorption disorders can deplete folate levels. Hemolytic anemia develops when red blood cells break down faster than your body can replace them. This can result from inherited conditions like sickle cell disease or hereditary spherocytosis, autoimmune diseases, infections, or certain medications. Sickle cell disease, affecting primarily people of African descent, causes red blood cells to become crescent-shaped and rigid, leading to pain, organ damage, and chronic anemia.
Aplastic anemia is a serious but rare condition where bone marrow stops producing enough blood cells of any type. This can result from severe infections, medications, chemotherapy, radiation, or autoimmune diseases. Anemia of chronic disease occurs when long-term conditions like cancer, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or heart disease trigger inflammation that interferes with red blood cell production. This type is becoming increasingly common as the population ages. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder where hemoglobin doesn't develop properly, affecting red blood cell function and lifespan. It primarily affects people of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian descent.
Bleeding-related anemia can develop from significant blood loss due to accidents, surgery, or chronic internal bleeding from ulcers or other digestive problems. Menorrhagia, or abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, causes many women to develop anemia over time. Pregnancy-related anemia is common because blood volume increases 30-50% during pregnancy while iron needs double.
Practical Takeaway: Different types of anemia require different treatments, so getting an accurate diagnosis matters. A healthcare provider can order specific blood tests to identify which type of anemia you might have. Understanding your particular type helps explain symptoms and guides appropriate management strategies.
How Healthcare Providers Diagnose Anemia
Diagnosing anemia begins with a conversation about your symptoms and medical history. Your healthcare provider will ask about fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and other symptoms. They'll also ask about your diet, medications, medical conditions, and family history. Some people inherit anemia-causing conditions, so this information helps guide testing. If you're a woman, your provider will ask about menstrual flow and whether you've noticed changes. If you're older, they might ask about digestive problems or medications you take.

The primary test for anemia is a complete blood count (CBC), a simple blood test that measures how many red blood cells you have and how much hemoglobin they contain. A healthcare provider or lab technician draws a small blood sample, usually from your arm, which takes just a minute. The test results show your hemoglobin level, hematocrit (the percentage of your blood that is red blood cells), and red blood cell count. Normal ranges vary by age and gender. Adult men typically have hemoglobin levels of 13.5-17.5 grams per deciliter, while adult women have 12.0-15.5 grams per deciliter. If your numbers fall below these ranges, you likely have anemia.
Once anemia is confirmed, additional tests identify the underlying cause. A peripheral blood smear allows a laboratory specialist to examine your red blood cells
