What Urine Tests Measure and Why Doctors Order Them
A urine test, also called urinalysis, is one of the most common laboratory tests doctors order. The test examines a sample of your urine to look for signs of health conditions, infections, or other changes in your body. Unlike blood tests that require needles, urine tests are simple and non-invasive—you simply provide a sample in a cup.

Doctors order urine tests for several reasons. They may want to check for a urinary tract infection (UTI) if you experience pain or burning during urination. They might test your urine as part of a routine physical exam or when you're experiencing symptoms like fatigue, back pain, or fever. Urine tests are also ordered to monitor chronic conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, or to screen for drug use in employment or legal situations.
The test can detect numerous substances and cells in your urine that shouldn't be there in large amounts, including bacteria, white blood cells, red blood cells, protein, glucose (sugar), and ketones. A urine test can also measure the pH level (acidity) of your urine and its specific gravity, which indicates how concentrated your urine is. Some urine tests look for specific drugs or their metabolites. Others check for pregnancy by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
The results provide your doctor with valuable information about your urinary system health, kidney function, and overall health status. According to the American Urological Association, urinalysis is performed on approximately 100 million people annually in the United States. This widespread use reflects how useful the test is for identifying various medical conditions early, when they may be easier to treat.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding why your doctor ordered a urine test helps you know what results to expect and what the findings might indicate about your health.
Understanding the Different Components of Your Urine Test Results
A typical urinalysis report includes several different measurements and observations. These results are usually divided into two main categories: physical properties and chemical composition. Learning what each component means helps you understand what the report is telling you about your health.

The physical examination section looks at three main characteristics. Color describes your urine's appearance—normal urine is typically pale yellow to clear, though this varies based on hydration levels. Dark yellow urine usually indicates dehydration, while other colors can signal different issues. Red or brown urine might suggest blood or certain foods you've eaten. Clarity describes whether your urine is clear, cloudy, or turbid. Clear urine is normal, while cloudy urine may indicate infection, minerals, or white blood cells. Specific gravity measures how concentrated your urine is on a scale from 1.005 to 1.030. A reading below 1.005 suggests your urine is very dilute (you're drinking lots of fluid), while readings above 1.025 suggest concentrated urine (you may be dehydrated).
The chemical analysis section examines urine for substances that shouldn't be present in significant amounts. pH measures acidity, with a normal range of 4.5 to 8.0. Slightly acidic urine is normal, though pH can shift based on diet and certain medications. Protein in urine (proteinuria) is unusual and may indicate kidney problems, urinary tract infections, or other conditions. Small trace amounts are sometimes normal, but higher levels warrant investigation. Glucose (sugar) in urine normally appears in very small amounts. Larger quantities suggest diabetes or other metabolic conditions, especially when combined with high blood sugar levels. Ketones appear when your body burns fat for energy rather than glucose, occurring during fasting, intense exercise, or uncontrolled diabetes.
Additional chemical tests look for nitrites (suggesting bacterial infection), leukocyte esterase (indicating white blood cells and possible infection), and bilirubin (a breakdown product of hemoglobin that suggests liver problems). Some tests also check for urobilinogen, a substance produced when hemoglobin breaks down.
Practical Takeaway: Your urine test report contains multiple measurements—reviewing each component separately helps you understand which specific areas may need further discussion with your doctor.
Reading Normal Ranges and What Abnormal Results Mean
Each test component comes with a "normal range" or "reference range" that helps you understand whether your result is typical or unusual. These ranges are established based on results from large populations of healthy people. However, normal ranges can vary slightly between different laboratories depending on their equipment and testing methods. This is why your lab report should always include the specific normal range used by your particular facility.

When a result falls within the normal range, it typically means that component is at a healthy level. When results fall outside the normal range, they're often marked with a flag or symbol on your report—commonly an asterisk (*), "H" for high, "L" for low, or "AB" for abnormal. These flags alert you and your doctor that something needs attention. However, a single abnormal result doesn't automatically mean you have a serious condition. Many factors can temporarily affect urine test results, including dehydration, intense exercise, medications, menstruation in women, or even the timing of when you provided the sample.
For example, finding protein in your urine (proteinuria) could indicate kidney disease, but it could also result from a urinary tract infection, recent intense exercise, fever, or pregnancy. Likewise, glucose in urine might suggest diabetes, but it occasionally appears temporarily in pregnant women (gestational glycosuria) or following stress. Finding white blood cells and bacteria typically suggests a UTI, but these can sometimes appear from contamination during sample collection.
Red blood cells in urine (hematuria) might indicate kidney stones, infection, or urinary tract injury, but can also result from menstruation in women or intense exercise in both men and women. Finding nitrites in urine strongly suggests bacterial infection. High ketones might indicate uncontrolled diabetes or severe fasting, while small amounts occasionally appear in healthy people during intense exercise or fasting.
This is why your doctor won't diagnose or treat a condition based solely on urine test results. They'll consider your symptoms, medical history, other test results, and physical examination findings. Many conditions require additional testing to confirm a diagnosis.
Practical Takeaway: One abnormal urine test result doesn't mean you're seriously ill—your doctor considers the complete clinical picture before making any diagnosis or treatment decisions.
How to Prepare for Your Urine Test and Ensure Accurate Results
Proper preparation and sample collection significantly affect the accuracy of your urine test results. Following your doctor's instructions helps ensure the results truly reflect your health status rather than being affected by how you collected the sample or your activities before testing.

Most urine tests don't require special preparation, but your doctor may give you specific instructions depending on why the test is being ordered. For routine tests, basic hydration is important—drinking normal amounts of water helps you provide a sample. However, drinking excessive amounts of water immediately before the test can dilute your urine, potentially affecting results. Similarly, severe dehydration can concentrate your urine and skew results. For best results, collect your urine sample at a time when you've been maintaining normal hydration for several hours.
The collection method matters significantly. For a standard urinalysis, you'll typically use the "clean-catch" or "midstream" method. This means you begin urinating, then catch the middle portion of the stream in the provided container, rather than collecting the first or last portions. This method reduces contamination from bacteria on your skin or genital area. Women should wipe from front to back before collection, and men should retract the foreskin if uncircumcised. Both should wash hands before and after collection.
Timing can affect results. Ideally, collect your sample in the morning when your urine is most concentrated, which can help identify abnormalities more clearly. However, any time of day works for routine tests. If your doctor suspects a urinary tract infection, they may ask you to collect a sample without the clean-catch method or may need to collect it using a catheter for maximum accuracy.
Certain activities and substances can temporarily affect results. Intense exercise within 24 hours before testing can increase protein and red blood cells in urine. Menstruation in women can contaminate the sample with blood. Some medications, vitamins (particularly B vitamins that turn urine bright yellow), and foods like beets can affect urine color. Cran
