Understanding Amazon Gift Cards and How They Work
Amazon Gift Cards are prepaid digital or physical vouchers that hold a specific dollar amount. You can use them to purchase items on Amazon.com, including books, electronics, groceries, clothing, and thousands of other products. The gift card value stays on your account until you spend it, with no expiration date in most cases. This guide explains the various types of Amazon Gift Cards available, how to add them to your account, and what you can and cannot purchase with them.

Amazon offers several gift card formats to meet different needs. Digital gift cards arrive via email within minutes and work immediately. Physical gift cards come as plastic cards or special packaging designs and must be redeemed by entering a code. Corporate gift cards serve businesses that want to give cards to employees or customers. There are also specialty gift cards designed specifically for Prime memberships or AWS (Amazon Web Services) credits, though these function differently than standard shopping cards.
When you redeem an Amazon Gift Card, the dollar amount transfers to your account balance. This balance appears in your "Gift Card Balance" section in your account settings and automatically applies to purchases you make. If your purchase exceeds your gift card balance, you can pay the remaining amount using a credit card, debit card, or other payment method on file. Conversely, if your purchase is less than your balance, the remaining amount stays in your account for future purchases.
It is important to note that Amazon Gift Card balances cannot be transferred to other accounts or converted to cash. The balance belongs only to the account it was redeemed to. Additionally, gift card balances do not earn rewards points through Amazon Prime or other loyalty programs, though any rewards earned from actual purchases using that balance would still apply.
Practical Takeaway: Before redeeming a gift card, make sure you are logged into the correct Amazon account, as the balance cannot be moved afterward. Keep your account email and password secure to protect your gift card funds.
Redeeming Your Amazon Gift Card Step by Step
Redeeming an Amazon Gift Card involves a straightforward process that takes just a few minutes. Whether you received a digital code via email or a physical card, the basic steps remain similar. This section walks through exactly what to do from the moment you receive a gift card until the balance appears in your account and is ready to use.

First, log into your Amazon account using your email address and password. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one by providing your name, email, and a password. Once logged in, navigate to the "Gift Cards" section, which is typically found under "Your Account" or "Account Settings." Look for an option that says "Redeem a Gift Card" or "Redeem Gift Card Balance." This link takes you to the redemption page where you will enter your gift card code.
If you have a digital gift card, the code appears in your email. Copy the code exactly as shown, including any hyphens or letters. Paste it into the redemption field on Amazon's website. If you have a physical card, look for the claim code, which is usually found on the back of the card or underneath a scratch-off coating. Enter this code into the same redemption field. After entering the code, click "Redeem" or "Submit." Amazon will verify the code and, if it is valid, add the amount to your account balance within seconds.
After successful redemption, you will see a confirmation message showing the dollar amount added to your account. This balance now appears in your "Gift Card Balance" section. You can begin using this balance for purchases immediately. When you add items to your shopping cart and proceed to checkout, Amazon automatically applies your gift card balance to the purchase. If you have multiple gift cards redeemed on the same account, the system combines the balances into one total amount.
Common issues during redemption include entering the code incorrectly, attempting to redeem a code that has already been used, or using a code intended for a different country's Amazon store. If you receive an error message, double-check that you entered the code correctly, paying attention to the difference between the letter "O" and the number "0," and the letter "I" and the number "1." If the code still does not work after careful re-entry, the code may have already been claimed by someone else.
Practical Takeaway: Save a screenshot or photo of your gift card code before redeeming it. If you lose access to your email, having this backup ensures you can still complete the redemption process on another device.
What You Can and Cannot Purchase With Amazon Gift Cards
Amazon Gift Card balances work for most items sold directly by Amazon or by third-party sellers through Amazon's marketplace. Understanding which purchases are covered by your gift card balance helps you plan your spending and avoid surprises at checkout. This section outlines what is available and what requires other payment methods.

You can use your gift card balance to purchase physical items like books, electronics, clothing, household goods, toys, and food products. Digital content purchases are also generally covered, including Kindle e-books, music albums, movies, and TV shows through Amazon Prime Video (for purchases, not subscriptions). Subscription services like Amazon Prime membership, Prime Video subscriptions, or Audible memberships require a credit card or debit card and cannot be paid with gift card balance alone. However, some digital services, such as purchasing individual songs or books, do accept gift card balance.
There are specific restrictions on what gift card balances cannot purchase. Alcohol cannot be purchased with gift cards, though other items can be. Third-party seller items sometimes have restrictions depending on the seller's policies. Gift cards themselves cannot be purchased with another gift card balance—if you want to buy a gift card as a present for someone else, you must use a credit card or debit card. Additionally, certain content such as adult-oriented materials or items prohibited in your region cannot be purchased with gift cards.
When you add an item to your cart that cannot be purchased with your gift card balance, Amazon will notify you at checkout. The system will require you to provide an alternative payment method for that specific item while applying your gift card balance to other items in the same order. This mixed payment approach allows you to complete purchases that include both gift-card-eligible and non-eligible items in a single transaction.
Prime Day deals, seasonal sales, and other promotions all accept gift card balances. Discounted items, clearance products, and products with special offers can all be purchased with your gift card, giving you the same savings as customers paying with other methods. Some sellers offer additional discounts or bundle deals that are compatible with gift card payments.
Practical Takeaway: Before adding an expensive item to your cart, check the product details to confirm it can be purchased with gift card balance. This prevents adding items you cannot pay for with your current balance and needing to add another payment method.
Managing Your Gift Card Balance and Account Security
Once you have redeemed your Amazon Gift Card, monitoring your balance and keeping your account secure becomes important. Your gift card balance is as valuable as cash, so taking steps to protect your account helps prevent unauthorized use. This section covers checking your balance, monitoring your spending, and security measures you should take.

To check your current gift card balance, log into your Amazon account and go to "Your Account" or "Account Settings." Look for "Gift Card Balance" or "Manage Your Gift Card Balance." This page displays your current balance and shows a history of recent additions to your gift card account. You can view this information anytime to confirm your balance before making a purchase. Some users prefer to check their balance regularly to track spending, especially if they use their gift card balance frequently.
Your purchase history appears separately from your gift card balance. When you make a purchase using your gift card balance, the transaction shows in your Amazon order history. You can view this history by clicking "Returns and Orders" or "Your Orders" in your account. Each order shows whether payment came from your gift card balance or another method. This information helps you track how much you have spent and how much balance remains available.
Protecting your Amazon account prevents someone else from using your gift card balance without permission. Use a strong password that combines uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Change your password regularly, and avoid using the same password across multiple websites. Enable two-factor authentication through your account settings, which requires you to confirm your identity using your phone when logging in from a new device. This extra step prevents unauthorized access even if someone obtains your password.
Be cautious about sharing your Amazon account information. Never share your password, and be wary of emails claiming to be
