What Western Union Money Orders Are and How They Work
A Western Union money order is a paper document that represents a specific amount of money. It functions similarly to a check but with some key differences. When you purchase a money order, you pay the full amount upfront plus a small fee. The money order then becomes a secure way to send money to someone else, or to pay bills and debts without using cash or a personal check.

Money orders have been used for over a century as a reliable payment method. Western Union, founded in 1851, became one of the largest money transfer services in the world. Today, Western Union money orders remain widely recognized and accepted at banks, bill payment centers, retail locations, and by many businesses and individuals.
The basic structure of a money order includes several important fields: the name of the person or business receiving the money (the payee), the amount being sent, the sender's name and address, and a unique serial number. This serial number allows both the sender and receiver to track the money order if needed.
Unlike sending cash through the mail, a money order provides a paper trail and receipt. If a money order is lost or stolen, it can potentially be replaced since Western Union maintains records of each transaction. This makes money orders safer than cash for long-distance payments, though the process for replacement requires documentation and can take time.
Money orders are particularly useful for people who don't have bank accounts, don't want to share their banking information, or need to pay someone without carrying large amounts of cash. Landlords, utility companies, government agencies, and many other organizations accept money orders as valid payment methods.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding that a money order is a prepaid document with a paper trail helps explain why it's considered a secure payment method. The key benefit is proof of payment—both the sender and receiver have documentation of the transaction.
Where to Purchase Western Union Money Orders
Western Union money orders can be purchased at thousands of locations across the United States and internationally. The most common places include Western Union agent locations, which are retail partners that offer Western Union services alongside their regular business operations.

Retail chain stores represent one of the largest categories of Western Union agents. Major retailers like Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, and Walgreens offer Western Union money order services at customer service desks or money transfer counters. According to Western Union's network data, there are over 550,000 agent locations worldwide, with hundreds of thousands in North America alone.
Banks and credit unions also issue money orders, though these are often their own branded versions rather than Western Union money orders specifically. However, many financial institutions partner with Western Union or other money order providers. It's worth asking your bank if they offer Western Union money orders, as this may be more convenient if you already have an account there.
Check-cashing stores and payday loan centers frequently offer Western Union money orders as one of their services. These specialized financial service businesses often operate in communities where traditional banking access may be limited, making them valuable distribution points for money orders.
Grocery stores, particularly larger chains, often have Western Union services available. Supermarkets like Kroger, Safeway, and regional chains maintain Western Union counters or partner kiosks. Post offices in some areas also offer money order services, though these may be USPS money orders rather than Western Union branded products.
When choosing where to purchase a money order, consider location convenience, hours of operation, and whether the vendor charges additional fees beyond the standard Western Union fee. Some vendors charge higher fees than others, so comparing costs across nearby locations can result in savings, particularly for frequent users.
Practical Takeaway: Before making a trip to purchase a money order, call ahead to confirm the location offers Western Union money orders and ask about their current fees. This prevents wasted trips and allows you to find the most affordable option in your area.
Understanding Money Order Fees and Costs
Western Union money order fees vary depending on the amount being sent and the location where you purchase the money order. As of recent pricing information, fees typically range from about $1.00 to $5.00 for most transactions. The fee structure generally follows a tiered system where larger money orders cost slightly more to purchase than smaller ones.

For example, a money order under $100 might cost $1.25 to $2.00 in fees at a retail location, while a money order between $100 and $500 might cost $2.50 to $3.50. Money orders for amounts above $500 up to the maximum typically cost between $4.00 and $5.00. These are general ranges, and actual fees vary by location and may change over time.
The payment location significantly affects the total fee. A grocery store may charge a different fee than a check-cashing store for the same money order amount. Some retailers absorb a portion of the fee themselves as part of their business model, while others pass the full cost to the customer. This is why comparing fees between nearby locations can save money, especially when sending multiple money orders.
International money order fees are substantially higher than domestic fees. If you're sending a Western Union money order to another country, expect to pay significantly more. International fees can range from $10 to $25 or higher depending on the destination country and amount being sent.
There are no hidden fees associated with Western Union money orders beyond the stated purchase fee. Once you've paid the fee and the face value of the money order, no additional charges occur unless the recipient deposits it in a bank account, which might have its own processing fees (though most banks accept money orders without charge).
A practical comparison: sending a $200 money order domestically costs significantly less than sending it through other Western Union services like a wire transfer or direct money transfer, which typically charge higher fees for faster delivery. Money orders are among the most cost-effective options Western Union offers for sending money domestically.
Practical Takeaway: Calculate the total cost before purchasing by adding the money order fee to the face amount. If sending multiple payments, ask if the retailer offers any discount for multiple transactions, and consider spreading payments over time if not urgent to reduce fees.
How to Fill Out and Send a Western Union Money Order
Properly filling out a Western Union money order is essential to ensure the funds reach the intended recipient. The process is straightforward, but mistakes can delay payment or create complications. The money order contains specific sections that must be completed correctly.

The "Pay to the Order of" field requires the name of the person or business that will receive the money. This is the most critical field—use the exact name the recipient prefers. If sending to a business, use the official business name as it appears on invoices or official documents. For individuals, use their full legal name if possible, though some money orders may accept nicknames if that's how they're commonly known.
The "From" or sender's section requires your name and address. This identifies who purchased the money order. While money orders don't require verification of identity in the same way bank accounts do, providing accurate information is important for record-keeping and in case the money order needs to be traced or replaced.
The amount section has two parts: one for writing the numerical amount (for example, $150.00) and another for writing the amount in words (One Hundred Fifty Dollars). Both must match exactly. If they don't match, the recipient may refuse to accept it or may need to contact Western Union for clarification.
An optional "Memo" field allows you to note the purpose of the money order, such as "Rent Payment" or "Invoice #12345." This helps the recipient track what the payment is for and is particularly useful for business transactions or bill payments.
Once filled out, sign the money order in the designated signature line. Don't sign the back of the money order—this is where the recipient will endorse it upon receipt. Keep the receipt portion of the money order, which contains the serial number and transaction details. This receipt is your proof of purchase and can be used to track the money order or request a refund if needed.
Sending the money order can be done via regular mail, hand delivery, or by giving it to the recipient in person. Unlike cash, money orders in the mail are relatively secure because they're made out to a specific person or business and cannot be cashed by anyone else if the name is filled in completely.
Practical Takeaway: Always keep your receipt until you have confirmation that the recipient received and cashed the money order
