Understanding the Costco Credit Card Options
Costco offers two primary credit card products through Visa: the Costco Anywhere Visa Card and the Costco Anywhere Visa Card for American Express members (issued by Citi). These cards function as payment tools rather than membership requirements, though they do provide rewards tied to Costco purchases. The Costco Anywhere Visa Card has been the standard offering since American Express ended its partnership with Costco in 2015, and it remains available to both Costco members and non-members, though membership status affects the rewards structure.

The card itself is a Visa product, meaning it works wherever Visa is accepted—not just at Costco locations. This distinguishes it from store-branded credit cards that function only at a specific retailer. Many people assume they need this card to shop at Costco, but membership and credit card ownership are separate decisions. You can hold a Costco membership without owning their credit card, and you can hold their credit card without being a member (though the rewards structure differs).
A free informational guide about Costco credit cards typically covers the distinctions between these card types, how they differ from Costco membership, and what each option involves. Understanding these fundamentals helps you make informed decisions about which payment method aligns with your shopping habits and financial situation. The guide provides educational context about how these products work, their structure, and what information to consider as you evaluate options.
- Costco Anywhere Visa Card works both at Costco and everywhere Visa is accepted
- Card ownership is separate from Costco membership status
- Two main versions exist with different reward structures for members versus non-members
- The card is issued by Citi, not by Costco directly
Practical Takeaway: Before exploring credit card options, clarify whether you're deciding about membership, credit card ownership, or both. These are three separate decisions that often get confused.
How the Rewards Structure Works
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card provides cash back rewards on purchases made with the card. For Costco members, the structure typically includes 2% cash back on Costco purchases (up to $110 per year, then 1%), 2% on gas at Costco stations, 1% on other purchases, and 3% at restaurants and travel. For non-members, the rewards are lower across categories. These percentages have remained relatively stable over recent years, though Costco does occasionally adjust reward rates and categories.

Cash back rewards accumulate as credits that appear on your cardholder statement. Unlike points that require redemption through a specific program, these cash back amounts can typically be applied toward your credit card balance or received as a statement credit. The annual cap of $110 in 2% cash back on Costco purchases means that after you've earned $110 in rewards at the 2% rate, your Costco purchase cash back drops to 1% for the remainder of the calendar year.
A guide on this topic explains how the reward tiers function, what types of purchases qualify for different percentages, and how rewards are credited to your account. This information helps you understand what to expect if you use the card for various purchases. The guide does not make claims about how much money you will personally save, as that depends entirely on individual spending patterns that vary widely from person to person.
- Cash back rates vary by purchase category (Costco, gas, restaurants, other)
- Rewards are applied as credits to your statement, not as physical payments
- Costco members and non-members receive different reward rates
- An annual cap limits the highest reward tier for Costco purchases
- Different purchase categories have different cash back percentages
Practical Takeaway: Compare the cash back percentages against your typical spending patterns. If you rarely buy gas or dine at restaurants, the card's value in those categories may not matter much to your situation.
Membership Requirements and Card Ownership Considerations
Costco membership and credit card ownership are independent. You do not need to own the Costco credit card to maintain a Costco membership, and you do not need to be a Costco member to hold the credit card itself. However, the rewards structure differs significantly based on membership status. Members receive more generous cash back rates, particularly on Costco purchases and gas, while non-members receive lower rates across all categories.

Costco charges annual fees for membership tiers: Gold Star membership and Executive membership, with the Executive tier costing more but offering additional benefits and higher cash back percentages on Costco purchases. The credit card itself may carry an annual fee (this varies by card version and changes over time). A free informational guide outlines these fee structures and explains how to understand the cost relationship between membership, card ownership, and the rewards you receive in return.
Many people use the card specifically because they are already Costco members and want to maximize the value of their membership through higher rewards. Others may own the card primarily for its benefits when used outside Costco, since it works everywhere Visa is accepted. Understanding your shopping patterns helps clarify whether owning this specific card makes financial sense for your situation.
- Costco membership and credit card ownership are separate financial decisions
- Membership status affects the rewards you receive from the credit card
- Both membership and the card may involve annual fees
- Executive membership tier offers different rewards than Gold Star membership
- You can shop at Costco without owning their credit card
Practical Takeaway: Calculate whether the additional rewards from membership, the card, or both combined would offset the annual fees you would pay. This calculation is personal and depends on your spending.
Annual Fees and Cost Considerations
Understanding fees is central to determining whether the Costco credit card represents good value for your situation. As of recent years, the Costco Anywhere Visa Card carries an annual fee that is typically waived in the first year but charged in subsequent years. Additionally, if you hold a Costco membership, that membership involves a separate annual fee. These are two distinct costs that should be evaluated independently.

A comprehensive evaluation requires looking at what you spend annually and what rewards you would receive. For example, if the card's annual fee is $59 and you would earn $150 in annual cash back rewards based on your projected spending, the net cost is effectively negative (you benefit by $91). Conversely, if you would only earn $40 in rewards, the card costs you a net $19 per year after accounting for rewards.
Costco periodically reviews and adjusts these fees, so checking Costco's official website or speaking with Costco staff about current fee structures is important. An educational guide covers how to calculate your personal breakeven point and what questions to ask when evaluating whether the card makes financial sense. The guide does not make guarantees about saving money, as that depends entirely on individual circumstances.
- The credit card typically has an annual fee after the first year
- Costco membership also has a separate annual fee
- Card fees and membership fees are charged independently
- You can calculate a personal breakeven point based on expected spending
- Fees may change year to year, so periodic review is advisable
Practical Takeaway: Estimate your annual spending in each rewards category, multiply by the cash back percentage, and compare that total to the annual fees you would pay. This simple math tells you whether the card would work in your financial favor.
Using the Card Inside and Outside Costco
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card works as a general-purpose payment card, not a Costco-exclusive card. This means you can use it at grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, online retailers, and any other location that accepts Visa. Each use location carries different reward rates according to the card's structure. Understanding how to use the card strategically across different merchant types is useful information that a guide typically covers.
