Understanding the GoPro Hero 4 Camera and Its Basic Features
The GoPro Hero 4 is a compact action camera that was released in 2014 and became one of the most popular models in the GoPro line. This camera measures just 2.6 inches long and weighs about 6.4 ounces, making it small enough to mount on helmets, chest harnesses, or handheld stabilizers. The Hero 4 comes in two versions: the Silver edition and the Black edition, with the Black version offering more advanced features and faster processing speeds.

The camera records video in multiple resolutions and frame rates. The Hero 4 Black can shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second or 1080p video at 120 frames per second, allowing users to capture slow-motion footage. The Silver version records up to 1440p resolution at various frame rates. Both models include a 12-megapixel still camera function, which means you can take high-quality photographs in addition to video recording.
The Hero 4 features a wide-angle lens with a 170-degree field of view, capturing what your eyes see while looking straight ahead and peripheral vision on both sides. This wide perspective is what makes GoPro cameras popular for action sports and adventure filming. The camera includes a built-in microphone, though an external microphone can be connected for better audio quality in windy conditions.
One important feature of the Hero 4 is its waterproof housing. The standard housing allows the camera to function underwater down to 131 feet (40 meters), and an optional Super Suit housing extends this to 196 feet (60 meters). This waterproofing makes the camera suitable for swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and other water activities.
Practical takeaway: Before setting up your Hero 4, understand that you have either the Silver or Black model, and each offers different video recording capabilities. Knowing which version you own helps you understand what settings and features are available on your specific camera.
What to Expect in Your GoPro Hero 4 Setup Guide
A GoPro Hero 4 setup guide typically contains information about preparing your camera for first use, understanding the physical components, and learning the basic menu navigation. The guide walks through what comes in the box, including the camera body, battery, USB charging cable, mounting bracket, and various adhesive mounts designed for different surfaces.

The setup guide explains the location and function of each button on the camera. The Hero 4 has a power button on top, a mode button on the back, and a shutter button on the front. Understanding these three main controls is essential because they control all basic camera functions. The mode button cycles through different shooting modes: video, still photo, and burst photo mode.
A helpful setup guide also covers the camera's display screen and how to read the information shown there. The Hero 4 features a small screen on the back that shows battery life, recording time remaining, current mode, and other status information. The guide explains what each icon means and how to interpret the data presented on the screen.
The guide typically includes information about charging the camera's battery and understanding battery life. The standard battery included with the Hero 4 provides approximately 60 to 90 minutes of recording time, depending on the resolution and frame rate settings being used. The guide explains how long charging takes (usually about 2 to 3 hours) and notes that battery life decreases in cold weather conditions.
Most setup guides also cover the optional WiFi bacpac accessory, which allows wireless connection to your smartphone or tablet. This wireless functionality lets you view live preview of what the camera sees and control recording remotely. The guide explains how to pair the camera with your device and what to expect from the connection.
Practical takeaway: A solid setup guide covers the physical basics: what's included in the box, where the buttons are located, what the screen displays, and how long the battery lasts. These foundational topics prepare you for actually using the camera.
First Steps: Preparing Your Camera for Recording
Before you can record video or take photos, your GoPro Hero 4 needs a memory card. The camera uses microSD or microSDHC cards, which are small memory storage devices about the size of a postage stamp. Most setup guides recommend using a high-speed card rated Class 10 or UHS-3, as these cards can write data quickly enough to keep up with the camera's video bitrate. Using a slower memory card may cause the camera to drop frames or stop recording unexpectedly.

Inserting the memory card involves locating the card slot on the side of the camera and sliding the card in until it clicks into place. The card must be inserted with the gold contacts facing into the camera. Some setup guides include a diagram showing the correct orientation. Once inserted, the camera recognizes the card, and you can begin recording immediately.
Charging the battery is the second essential preparation step. The Hero 4 comes with a USB charging cable. You can charge the battery while it remains in the camera by connecting the USB cable to a wall charger, computer, or power bank. The guide typically explains that a small light on the camera indicates charging status: a red light means the battery is charging, and the light turns off when fully charged.
Setting the date and time on your camera is another recommended first step. While the Hero 4 will function without accurate date and time settings, having correct information helps when you later review footage on your computer. The setup guide walks through the menu to find the date and time settings, usually accessed by holding the mode button to turn on the camera's display screen.
Formatting the memory card through the camera's menu is also commonly mentioned in setup guides. Formatting erases everything on the card and prepares it specifically for the GoPro's file system. This is different from formatting on a computer and ensures compatibility. The guide typically provides the menu path to find the format option.
Practical takeaway: Three essential preparation tasks—inserting a compatible memory card, charging the battery, and formatting the card—must be completed before your camera is ready to record. Skipping any of these steps may prevent the camera from functioning correctly.
Understanding Camera Modes and Recording Settings
The GoPro Hero 4 offers several recording modes accessed by pressing the mode button. Video mode is the primary recording function that captures moving footage. When you press the shutter button, the camera begins recording, and it continues until you press the shutter button again. A small red recording indicator appears on the screen during recording.

Photo mode captures still images rather than video. In photo mode, each press of the shutter button takes one photograph. The Hero 4 stores these images separately from video files on the memory card. Photo mode is useful for capturing specific moments or when you want high-resolution still images for printing or detailed viewing.
Burst mode captures multiple photographs in rapid succession with one button press. You can configure burst mode to capture 3, 5, or 10 photos per second. This mode is helpful in sports and action situations where you want multiple shots of a moment and can select the best one later. The setup guide typically explains that burst mode uses more memory card space than regular photo mode.
Time-lapse mode records a single frame at set intervals, creating a video that shows movement happening much faster than real time. For example, a time-lapse set to capture one frame every two seconds can compress an hour of real time into just 30 seconds of video. This mode is popular for capturing sunrise, sunset, clouds moving across the sky, or people moving through a space over extended periods.
The setup guide explains that each mode has adjustable settings. In video mode, you can change resolution (4K, 2.7K, 1440p, or 1080p), frame rate (24fps, 25fps, 30fps, 48fps, 50fps, 60fps, or 120fps depending on resolution), and other features like white balance and ISO limits. These settings affect both video quality and file size. Higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger files that use more memory card space.
The guide also mentions that the Black model offers more video quality options than the Silver model. The Black can record in 4K resolution, while the Silver maxes out at 1440p. This difference is important to understand if you're comparing the two models or shopping for additional lenses or accessories designed for specific recording capabilities.
