Understanding Color Display Settings on Windows
Windows operating systems offer several built-in features for changing the colors you see on your screen. These settings control everything from the overall theme of your interface to the specific hues displayed in windows, buttons, and text. Most Windows computers come with color customization options already installed, so you don't need to purchase anything or add new software to get started.

The most common way to change colors in Windows involves accessing the Settings application. You can reach this by right-clicking on your desktop background and selecting "Personalize" or by opening Settings directly. From there, you'll find a "Colors" section that lets you switch between light mode and dark mode. Light mode displays dark text on a white background, while dark mode shows light text on a dark background. Many people prefer dark mode in low-light environments because it produces less eye strain, while others find light mode easier to read during the day.
Windows also allows you to choose an accent color that appears throughout your interface. This accent color affects elements like hyperlinks, selected items, and notification badges. You can pick from preset colors or create a custom color by entering specific color codes if you want something more unique. The system can even extract a dominant color from your current wallpaper and use that as your accent color automatically.
Beyond these basic settings, Windows includes a high contrast mode designed for people who need stronger visual separation between interface elements. This mode uses bold colors and thick outlines to make everything stand out more clearly. Additionally, you can adjust color filters that simulate different types of color blindness, helping you see how your screen appears to people with red-green or blue-yellow color vision deficiency.
Practical takeaway: Start with Settings > Personalization > Colors to explore your current options. Try switching between light and dark modes for a few days each to see which feels more comfortable for your daily work. Take note of how different accent colors affect your visual experience.
Changing Colors in Mac Operating System
Apple's macOS provides color customization options similar to Windows, though the interface and terminology differ slightly. Mac users access these settings through System Preferences or System Settings, depending on which macOS version they're running. Like Windows, macOS offers both light and dark appearance modes that change the entire interface theme.

On a Mac, you'll find color settings by going to System Preferences (or System Settings on newer versions) and clicking "General" or "Appearance." From this menu, you can select either Light, Dark, or Auto mode. Auto mode automatically switches between light and dark based on the time of day—dark mode activates in the evening and switches back to light mode in the morning. This feature works without requiring manual adjustment each day.
Macs also let you choose accent colors and highlight colors. The accent color affects buttons, links, and other interactive elements throughout the system. You can pick from several preset options including blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, and graphite. The highlight color works similarly and determines the color used when you select text or items in lists. Some users prefer matching their accent and highlight colors for a cohesive look, while others choose contrasting colors for better visual distinction.
macOS includes additional refinements like the ability to set a custom wallpaper color and control how that wallpaper appears with dynamic, light, or dark options. You can also use the Accessibility settings to enable increased contrast, which works similarly to Windows' high contrast mode. For users with color vision deficiency, macOS offers color filters and grayscale options that adjust how colors display on screen.
Another Mac feature is the ability to create custom color profiles through ColorSync. While this is more technical than basic theme selection, it allows fine-tuned control over how your specific monitor displays colors. This proves especially useful for photography, design work, or situations where color accuracy matters significantly.
Practical takeaway: Navigate to System Preferences > General or System Settings > Appearance, then experiment with Light and Dark modes. If you spend time working both during day and evening, try the Auto setting to let your Mac adjust automatically. Notice which accent color combination feels least distracting during your typical work tasks.
Exploring Dark Mode and Light Mode Options
Dark mode and light mode represent the most popular color customization choice on both Windows and Mac systems. Understanding the differences and benefits of each can help you decide which works best for your situation. Light mode uses a white or very light background with dark text, which has been the standard for decades. Dark mode reverses this with a dark background and light text, creating a strikingly different visual appearance.

Research on dark mode usage suggests it may reduce eye strain during evening hours and nighttime work. The bright light from a light-colored screen can trigger your eyes to work harder in low-light environments, potentially leading to discomfort. Dark mode reduces the brightness your screen emits, which some users report as more comfortable for extended evening sessions. However, this doesn't mean dark mode is universally better—studies show that people with certain types of astigmatism may actually find light mode easier to read because of how the eye focuses on bright versus dark text.
Light mode maintains its advantages during daytime use and in bright environments. The higher contrast between text and background in light mode can make reading faster and reduce the chance of missing details. People who work outdoors or near windows often prefer light mode because it competes better with natural sunlight. Some professions, particularly those involving document preparation or detailed reading, traditionally use light mode for precisely this reason.
Both Windows and Mac allow you to set different colors for different applications, though this requires more detailed adjustment. Some built-in applications automatically respect your system-wide color choice, while third-party applications may have their own color settings that override your system preferences. Web browsers, for instance, may display websites in their original colors regardless of your dark mode setting, though some browsers now offer dark mode options for websites themselves.
The Auto setting available on both systems represents a middle ground. By switching automatically based on sunset and sunrise times, this option eliminates the need to manually change your display. Your computer learns your location and adjusts accordingly, transitioning to dark mode when the sun sets and back to light mode when it rises.
Practical takeaway: Try using light mode for one week during your normal work hours, then switch to dark mode for an evening week. Track whether you experience any differences in eye comfort, reading speed, or overall satisfaction. Pay attention to which tasks feel better in which mode—you may find that switching modes depending on the time of day provides the most comfort.
Customizing Accent and Highlight Colors
Beyond choosing between light and dark modes, both Windows and Mac offer granular control over accent colors—the colors used for buttons, links, and selected items throughout your interface. These colors significantly impact how your computer looks and can affect your productivity and emotional response to your workspace. Selecting colors thoughtfully can create an interface that feels both visually appealing and functionally clear.

On Windows, you can access accent color options through Settings > Personalization > Colors. The system presents you with a palette of preset colors ranging from cool blues and teals to warm reds and oranges. Each of these colors appears in different shades depending on whether you're using light or dark mode. Choosing a blue accent color on light mode creates a different shade than the same blue on dark mode, allowing for visual consistency while maintaining readability.
Windows also includes a feature that automatically extracts a dominant color from your current desktop wallpaper and uses it as your accent color. This creates a harmonious visual experience where your interface colors complement your background image. You can enable this option and let it update automatically whenever you change your wallpaper, or you can manually set it whenever you want a fresh look.
Mac's approach to accent colors follows a similar philosophy but with slightly different implementation. In System Settings > General or System Preferences > General, you'll see a color palette with options like Blue, Purple, Pink, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Graphite. The Graphite option provides a neutral appearance without strong color emphasis. Like Windows, Mac uses different shades of your chosen color depending on whether you're in light or dark mode, ensuring the colors remain readable and aesthetically pleasing.
The highlight color on Mac works in conjunction with the accent color to determine what color appears when you select text or items. This gives you additional control over visual feedback. Some users prefer matching their accent and highlight colors for simplicity, while others choose contrasting colors to make selections stand out more dramatically. Experiment with different combinations to find what provides the best visual feedback for your workflow.
For both systems, consider the nature of your work when selecting colors. If you work with visual design or photography, neutral accent
