Understanding Display Resolution and Screen Size
Display resolution refers to the number of pixels (tiny dots of light) that make up the image on your screen. It's expressed as two numbers, like 1920x1080, where the first number is the horizontal pixels and the second is vertical pixels. A higher resolution means more pixels packed into the same space, which generally results in sharper, clearer images and text.

Screen size is measured diagonally across the display in inches. A 24-inch monitor and a 27-inch monitor showing the same resolution will display content differently because the pixels are spread over a larger area on the bigger screen. This is why a 27-inch screen at 1920x1080 resolution may show slightly larger text and icons compared to a 24-inch screen at the same resolution.
Common resolutions you'll encounter include 1366x768 (often found on budget laptops), 1920x1080 (standard for many desktops and modern laptops), 2560x1440 (high-definition), and 3840x2160 (4K ultra-high-definition). Mobile phones typically have much higher pixel densities due to their smaller screen sizes. For example, an iPhone may have a resolution of 2556x1179 pixels on a 6.1-inch screen.
The relationship between resolution and screen size matters for your viewing experience. On Windows computers, you can view your resolution by right-clicking the desktop, selecting "Display settings," and looking under "Display resolution." On Mac computers, go to System Preferences, click Displays, and check the resolution options. On phones and tablets, this information is usually in Settings under Display or About Device.
Practical takeaway: Before purchasing a new monitor or device, research both the screen size and resolution together. A 4K resolution on a small 22-inch screen may not provide noticeable benefits compared to 1080p, while a large 32-inch screen at 1080p may appear pixelated. Consider what you'll use the device for—detailed graphics work benefits from higher resolutions, while general web browsing works well at standard resolutions.
Adjusting Brightness and Contrast for Comfort
Brightness controls how much light your display emits. Contrast controls the difference between the darkest and lightest parts of your image. Getting these settings right reduces eye strain and improves your ability to see details on the screen. Most people work in varying lighting conditions throughout the day, so what works in the morning may need adjustment in the afternoon.

On Windows computers, brightness controls are often found in Settings > System > Display. You can also use the keyboard shortcut of the brightness key (usually with a sun icon) on your laptop. Most Windows laptops allow you to adjust brightness from 0 to 100 percent. On Mac computers, go to System Preferences > Displays to find brightness controls. For iPhones and iPads, swipe down from the top-right corner (or up from the bottom on older models) to access Control Center and adjust brightness there.
Research from the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that screens that are too bright cause more eye strain than screens that are slightly dim. A common recommendation is to set your brightness so that it's roughly equal to the brightness of your surrounding environment. If you're in a dimly lit room at night, your screen shouldn't be at full brightness. During daytime with windows nearby, you may need to increase brightness to see comfortably.
Contrast settings work alongside brightness. If brightness is like turning up the volume on a speaker, contrast is like adjusting the bass and treble. Increasing contrast makes blacks darker and whites brighter, which can help if you have difficulty distinguishing between similar shades. However, excessive contrast can make images look unnatural and cause fatigue. Most people find default contrast settings (usually around 50-75 percent) work well.
Practical takeaway: Set brightness based on your immediate environment rather than a fixed number. As a starting point, try setting brightness to about 40-50 percent in dim indoor lighting and 70-80 percent in bright conditions. Contrast should typically stay near the middle unless you have specific vision needs. Make these adjustments during the time of day you most often use the device.
Using Blue Light Filters and Night Mode Features
Blue light is the short-wavelength light emitted by all digital screens. While blue light during daytime is normal and even beneficial for alertness, exposure to blue light in the evening can interfere with sleep by suppressing melatonin production—the hormone that signals your body it's time to rest. Most modern devices include features to reduce blue light output during evening hours.

Windows 10 and 11 computers have a feature called "Night light" found in Settings > System > Display. You can set it to turn on automatically at sunset or at a specific time you choose. The intensity can be adjusted from subtle to strong. Similarly, Mac computers have "Night Shift" in System Preferences > Displays, which works on the same principle. iPhones and iPads have "Night Shift" accessible from Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness. Android phones typically have "Night Light" or "Blue Light Filter" in Display settings.
These filters work by shifting the color temperature of your display toward warmer colors (more red and yellow, less blue). The effect is similar to looking at candlelight rather than daylight. Research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that using blue light filters two hours before bedtime improved sleep quality in study participants. However, the effect is modest—good sleep hygiene (like putting screens away 30-60 minutes before bed) remains more important than the filter alone.
Most devices allow you to schedule these filters automatically. A common recommendation is to turn on blue light reduction two to three hours before your typical bedtime. If you work evening shifts or have an unusual schedule, you can customize these times. Some people find the warmer screen color takes getting used to, but most adapt within a few days.
Practical takeaway: Enable blue light filtering in the late afternoon or evening, depending on your schedule. Set it to activate automatically rather than remembering to turn it on manually. Start with a moderate intensity setting and adjust based on comfort—you want the screen to look warm but not orange. Remember that a blue light filter is one tool among many for better sleep; it works best alongside other practices like keeping your bedroom cool and dark.
Optimizing Text Size and Scaling
Text size settings control how large words and characters appear on your screen. This is different from resolution—you can have high resolution but still make text larger or smaller to suit your preferences. Many people increase text size to reduce eye strain, while others decrease it to see more information on screen at once.

On Windows computers, you can adjust text size in Settings > System > Display under "Scale and layout." Windows offers scaling from 100 percent (standard) to 175 percent or higher. A 125 percent scaling makes everything 25 percent larger. On Mac computers, go to System Preferences > Displays and choose "Scaled," then select a resolution. The options range from larger text to more space on screen. On iPhones, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size and use the slider. For more dramatic text enlargement, you can use Accessibility settings.
Android devices offer text scaling in Settings > Display > Font Size. Some Android phones also have a "Display size" option that scales all interface elements, not just text. This is useful if you find icons and buttons too small. The Vision Council reports that 64 percent of Americans experience eye strain from screen use, and proper text sizing is one of the easiest ways to reduce this.
Finding the right text size is personal. A good starting point is to sit at your normal working distance (typically 20-26 inches from your screen) and adjust the size so you can read text comfortably without leaning forward. If you find yourself squinting or moving closer to the screen, increase the text size. If you're having trouble seeing enough content at once, you might try a smaller size or a higher resolution display.
Practical takeaway: Start with the default text size for your device for one week. If you notice eye strain or find yourself leaning forward to read, increase the scaling by 10-15 percent and give it another week to adjust. Document what setting feels most comfortable during your typical work or usage time. Remember that different applications may have their own text size settings in addition to system-wide scaling.
