Understanding Stripped Screw Holes and Why They Happen
A stripped screw hole occurs when the threads inside a hole become damaged or worn down, preventing a screw from gripping properly. When you turn a screw into a hole with stripped threads, it spins freely without tightening, similar to turning a screw into empty air. This common problem affects wood, plastic, and metal materials alike.

Stripped holes develop through several mechanisms. Repeated use causes gradual wear—installing and removing the same screw multiple times can damage the threads. Using a screw that's too large for the hole forces the threads apart as it enters. Turning a screw with excessive force can strip the threads before the fastener reaches its final position. Low-quality screws made from soft metal may also strip threads when driven with power tools. Materials themselves matter: softer woods strip more easily than hardwoods, and plastic is particularly vulnerable to thread damage.
The location of the stripped hole determines how problematic it becomes. A stripped hole in a cabinet hinge affects door alignment and security. Stripped holes in an appliance handle create safety concerns. Stripped bolt holes in machinery can lead to component failure. Understanding the location and severity helps determine which repair method will work best.
Statistics show that approximately 35 percent of DIY projects involve fastener-related issues, with stripped holes ranking among the top problems homeowners encounter. The good news is that multiple proven techniques exist to restore functionality to stripped holes without replacing the entire component.
Practical Takeaway: Identify whether your stripped hole is in wood, plastic, or metal, and determine how critical the fastening function is. This assessment guides your choice of repair method.
Repairing Stripped Holes in Wood
Wood is the most common material affected by stripped screw holes, particularly in furniture, cabinets, and home construction. Several effective methods restore wood holes to working condition, ranging from simple to more involved approaches.

The toothpick method works for minor stripping in wood. Remove the screw from the hole and fill it with round wooden toothpicks or wooden dowels coated in wood glue. Break off the toothpicks flush with the surface and let the glue dry completely—usually 2 to 4 hours. Drill a new pilot hole into the toothpick-filled space and install your screw. This method works because the toothpicks create new material for the screw threads to grip. It's ideal for small furniture pieces and applications where appearance matters less than function.
The wooden dowel approach suits larger holes or applications requiring stronger holds. Drill out the damaged hole to accept a wooden dowel one-quarter to one-half inch in diameter. Insert a dowel coated with wood glue into the enlarged hole and let it dry. Sand the dowel flush with the surface, then drill a pilot hole and install your screw. This method creates a stronger repair than toothpicks and can handle repeated use better.
For holes in particleboard or MDF (medium-density fiberboard), consider using expanding wooden plugs. These specialized plugs have split sides that expand when driven into a hole, gripping the surrounding material firmly. Install the plug into the stripped hole, let any glue dry if required, then drill your pilot hole and install the screw.
The plastic anchor method offers another option for wood repairs. Install a plastic wall anchor or toggle anchor into the stripped hole, which creates a gripping surface for your screw. This technique works particularly well for repeated use scenarios since the anchor can be replaced if it wears out.
Practical Takeaway: For wood holes, start with the toothpick method for small repairs. Use wooden dowels for larger applications. Both methods are inexpensive and require minimal tools.
Fixing Stripped Holes in Plastic and Composite Materials
Plastic materials present unique challenges for stripped screw holes because plastic lacks the structural integrity of wood or metal, and heat from friction can melt surrounding material. However, effective repair methods exist specifically for plastic components.

The epoxy putty method works well for plastic repairs. Remove the screw and clean out any loose material from the hole. Mix two-part epoxy putty according to package directions and press it firmly into the stripped hole, overfilling slightly. Allow it to cure completely—usually 24 hours—then drill a pilot hole at the appropriate location and install your screw. The cured epoxy creates a hard surface that new screw threads can grip effectively.
Thread-locking compound offers a simpler solution for some plastic applications. After filling the hole with epoxy or another filler, apply thread-locking compound to your screw before installation. The compound fills minor gaps between the screw and hole, creating additional grip. This approach works best for applications that don't require frequent fastener removal.
For plastic items that see frequent fastener removal and installation—such as battery compartment covers or removable panels—consider installing a threaded insert. Drill the hole to the size specified by the insert manufacturer, then install the insert according to instructions. Threaded inserts create a durable metal thread surface that handles repeated use far better than plastic alone. Quality threaded inserts can outlast the plastic component itself.
Heat-set inserts represent another option for plastic repairs. These specialized inserts use heat to bond with surrounding plastic material, creating an extremely secure connection. Installation requires a soldering iron or heat tool, making this method more involved but highly effective for demanding applications.
Avoid using wood filler, spackling compound, or other porous materials in plastic holes, as these materials don't create the hardness needed to grip screw threads effectively.
Practical Takeaway: Use epoxy putty for one-time repairs in plastic. Install threaded inserts if the fastener requires repeated removal and installation. Both methods create durable, long-lasting repairs.
Restoring Stripped Holes in Metal
Metal components require different approaches than wood or plastic because metal's hardness prevents the filler materials used in softer materials from working effectively. Metal repairs focus on creating new threads or larger fastening surfaces.

The threaded insert method is the standard repair for metal stripped holes. Remove the damaged screw and drill the hole to the size specified by your threaded insert kit. Install the insert—typically a helical coil or solid insert—according to kit instructions. This process creates new, durable threads in the hole. Quality threaded inserts can be installed and removed multiple times without degrading, making this the preferred solution for machinery, engine components, and other metal items subject to repeated fastener replacement.
Helical coil inserts, also called wire thread inserts, work by creating a spiral thread surface inside the hole. Installation requires a special tap tool to prepare the hole and an installation tool to wind the insert into place. Once installed, helical coils provide excellent holding power and can handle vibration better than many other methods.
Solid threaded inserts offer a simpler installation process. These cylindrical inserts contain internal threads and typically require just a drill and wrench or socket to install. They provide reliable performance for applications that don't require frequent fastener removal.
For stripped bolt holes in metal plates or brackets, drilling and tapping a larger size hole represents another option. If you have access to the appropriate drill bits and taps, you can enlarge the hole and create new threads for a larger bolt. This method works when space permits using a larger fastener. However, it requires specific tools and metalworking knowledge, making it less suitable for casual repairs.
Welding provides a permanent solution for severely damaged metal holes. A qualified welder can fill the damaged hole and drill new threads, but this approach should only be considered for critical applications since welding affects the surrounding metal structure.
Practical Takeaway: Install threaded inserts in stripped metal holes. This method is reliable, reusable, and requires only basic tools and moderate skill.
Tools and Materials You'll Need

Basic tools include a drill with variable speed settings and a selection of drill bits matching your project's material and hole size. A screwdriver set with multiple sizes ensures you can handle various fasteners. A measuring tape or ruler helps identify hole sizes and spacing. For wood repairs, you may want a saw or utility knife to cut dow
