For a name change, bring a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. These documents allow staff to verify your work history and address any questions about your account. If you're unsure about what documents to bring, the representative who schedules your appointment can tell you specifically what will be needed.
If you are going to your appointment to request a replacement Social Security card, bring documents that prove your identity, age, and citizenship or immigration status. For citizenship or immigration status, a birth certificate, passport, or immigration document may be needed depending on your situation. The Social Security office can provide more detailed information about these requirements when you schedule your appointment.
It's also a good idea to bring a list of any questions you want to ask or topics you want to discuss. Write these down before your appointment so you don't forget them. Once you are called, a Social Security representative will meet with you in a private or semi-private area. This representative will review the reason for your visit and discuss what you need. They may ask questions about your personal situation, your work history, or your specific question or concern. Be prepared to discuss these topics openly and honestly, as the information you provide affects the accuracy of your Social Security record.
The representative will use a computer system to access your Social Security record and make any necessary updates or changes. If you're there to report a change of address, update your direct deposit information, or change your name, the representative will enter this information into the system. If you're there to discuss a question about benefits or programs, the representative will explain how the programs work and answer your questions based on your individual situation.
The appointment typically lasts between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of your case and what needs to be done. Simple appointments, such as requesting a replacement Social Security card or updating an address, may be quicker. More complex matters, such as discussing your earning record or addressing an error in your account, may take longer. The representative will let you know approximately how long the process will take when you begin.
If the representative cannot fully resolve your issue during the appointment, they may need to escalate your case or have you follow up by mail or phone. They will explain what next steps are needed and provide you with information about how to proceed. You may also receive a confirmation letter in the mail within a few weeks confirming any changes that were made during your appointment.
Practical Takeaway: Bring a small notepad and pen to your appointment. Take notes about what the representative tells you, any next steps you need to take, and any information they provide. Having these notes will help you remember important details after you leave the office.
