Understanding Why You Might Cancel Your American Express Card
People cancel credit cards for many different reasons. You might want to close an American Express card if you no longer use it, if the annual fee has become too expensive for your spending habits, or if you've decided to switch to a different card that better matches your financial goals. Some cardholders close accounts after paying off debt, while others consolidate their cards to simplify their finances. Understanding your reason for cancellation can help you make an informed decision about whether closing the account is the right choice for you.

Before you cancel, it's worth thinking through the potential effects on your credit. Your credit score is influenced by several factors, including the total amount of available credit you have and how much of it you're using. When you close a card, you lose that available credit, which can affect these numbers. Additionally, closing an older account may change the average age of your credit history. These changes don't happen instantly, but they can occur over weeks or months following the closure.
You might also want to consider whether you have a balance on the card. If you do, you'll need to pay it off before or at the time of cancellation. Some people choose to keep an old card open with a zero balance just to maintain their available credit and account history, even if they don't use it regularly. This is a valid strategy for credit management, though it depends on your individual situation.
Takeaway: Before canceling, review your account balance, think about the potential credit score effects, and consider whether keeping the account open might benefit you in other ways.
Preparing Your Account Before Cancellation
Taking time to prepare your account before you cancel can make the process smoother and protect you from unexpected issues. First, you should pay off any outstanding balance on your card completely. This includes not just the minimum payment, but the full balance owed. You can check your current balance by logging into your American Express account online, calling the customer service number on the back of your card, or viewing your most recent statement.

Next, review any automatic payments you may have set up through this card. Many people use their credit cards to pay recurring bills like insurance, utilities, gym memberships, or subscriptions. If you don't redirect these payments to another card or bank account before closing the card, these payments could fail, which might result in late fees or service interruptions. Go through your account and make a list of all regular charges, then update the payment method for each one separately.
You should also consider whether you have any pending rewards. If your American Express card offers rewards points, miles, or cash back, find out what options you have for using or redeeming them. Some rewards expire when you close the account, while others may remain available for a period of time. Check your rewards balance and the terms of your specific card to understand your options. You might want to use the rewards before closing if that's possible with your card type.
Additionally, make sure you don't have any active disputes or claims pending on the account. If you've reported unauthorized charges or are in the middle of resolving a transaction issue, closing the account could complicate matters. It's best to resolve these issues first or at least understand how closing the account might affect them.
Takeaway: Pay your full balance, redirect automatic payments, redeem any remaining rewards, and resolve any pending disputes before you cancel to avoid complications.
How to Cancel Your American Express Card
American Express offers several methods for canceling your card, and you can choose the approach that feels most comfortable for you. The most straightforward method is to call their customer service line. The phone number appears on the back of your physical card, and you can call that number to speak with a representative who can process your cancellation request. When you call, be ready to provide your account number and may be asked to verify your identity by answering security questions or providing other identifying information.

During the phone call, the representative may ask why you want to cancel. This is a standard question and gives American Express an opportunity to address concerns or potentially offer alternatives like a reduced annual fee or different card with lower costs. You're under no obligation to accept these offers, and you can proceed with cancellation if that's what you want. Be clear and direct about your request so there's no confusion about your intentions.
Another option is to cancel through your American Express online account. Log in to your account on the American Express website, navigate to your account settings, and look for options related to closing the account or managing your card. Not all card types offer this online option, so you may need to check whether it's available for your specific card before attempting this method. The online process typically involves confirming your identity and then following prompts to request closure.
You can also send a written request via mail. Write a letter to American Express requesting that they close your account and include your account number, card number, and signature. Mail this letter to the address shown on your billing statement. While this method works, it takes longer than calling or using the online portal, and you won't receive immediate confirmation that your request has been processed. Keep a copy of your letter for your records.
Regardless of which method you choose, it's important to get written confirmation of your cancellation. If you cancel by phone, ask the representative to note your request in the system and to tell you when you can expect written confirmation. If you cancel online, save or print any confirmation messages. Having documentation protects you in case there's a question about whether your account was properly closed.
Takeaway: Call the number on your card, use your online account portal, or send a written request to cancel. Whatever method you choose, obtain written confirmation of your cancellation.
What to Expect After Cancellation
After you request cancellation, it doesn't happen instantly. American Express typically closes accounts within a few days to a couple of weeks. During this waiting period, you can still use your physical card for transactions if you haven't destroyed it, though this can sometimes cause confusion. Many people prefer to destroy their card as soon as they've initiated the cancellation request to avoid accidentally using the card or having others use it.

Your credit report will reflect the account closure, but timing varies. The account may show as closed for several months or longer on your credit report. During this time, the account is no longer active, but information about it—including your payment history—remains on your credit report. This historical information actually stays on your report for years and continues to factor into your credit score based on your payment record with that account.
You'll likely receive final correspondence from American Express. This may include a final billing statement showing a zero balance and confirmation that the account has been closed. Keep this documentation in your records. Some accounts may show a final small charge or credit that needs to be resolved; if this happens, contact American Express to clarify before assuming everything is complete.
Check your credit report over the following weeks and months to verify that the account shows as closed. You can obtain a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) once per year by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com. Reviewing your report helps you spot any errors and ensures that the cancellation was processed correctly on your credit profile.
If you were previously authorized to receive an American Express account statement or other communications, those will stop. If you need any historical information from your closed account, you should request it before the cancellation is fully processed, as it may become more difficult to retrieve once the account is closed.
Takeaway: Expect the account to close within weeks, monitor your credit report to confirm the closure, and keep all final documentation for your records.
Managing Your Credit Score After Cancellation
Closing a credit card can affect your credit score, though the impact varies depending on your overall credit situation. The main factor is your credit utilization ratio, which is the percentage of your available credit that you're actively using. For example, if you had $10,000 in available credit across all your cards and were using $3,000 of it, your utilization ratio was 30 percent. When you close the card and lose that $10,000 in available credit, your ratio changes even if you're still using the same $3,000. This can cause your score to dip, at least temporarily.

The impact on your score also depends on whether the account you're closing is old or new. If you're closing an older account, you may see a slight decline in your average account age, which is another factor that influences your score. Conversely, if you're closing a newer account, the impact on your average age is smaller. If you have an
