Understanding Clove Oil: What It Is and Where It Comes From
Clove oil is an aromatic liquid extracted from the dried flower buds of the clove plant, scientifically known as Syzygium aromaticum. This plant grows naturally in the Maluku Islands of Indonesia and has been valued for centuries in cooking, traditional medicine, and cosmetic applications. The oil contains a compound called eugenol, which makes up about 70-90% of its composition. This compound gives clove oil its distinctive warm, spicy aroma and many of its practical uses.

The clove plant produces small, unopened flower buds that turn dark brown when dried. These buds look like tiny nails, which is actually how the spice got its name—the word "clove" comes from the Latin word "clavus," meaning nail. When you purchase whole cloves at a grocery store, you're buying these dried flower buds in their natural form. Clove oil is simply the concentrated essence extracted from these buds through various methods.
Making clove oil at home allows you to create a pure product without additives or fillers that might appear in commercial versions. Homemade clove oil can be used in cooking, aromatherapy, natural cleaning products, and personal care applications. The process is straightforward and uses materials you may already have in your kitchen. Understanding the source material and composition of clove oil helps you appreciate why it has been used across many cultures and what makes it valuable for different purposes.
Practical Takeaway: Clove oil comes from the flower buds of the clove plant and contains eugenol as its primary active compound. Making it at home gives you control over purity and quality, making it suitable for cooking, aromatherapy, and household uses.
Gathering Your Materials: What You'll Need to Get Started
To make clove oil at home, you need just a few basic materials. The most important ingredient is whole dried cloves, which you can purchase from any grocery store spice section or online retailer. One ounce of dried cloves typically costs between $2 and $6, depending on quality and source. Look for cloves that are dark brown and fragrant—avoid any that appear gray or lack aroma, as this indicates they are old and have lost potency. For a basic batch, purchasing 1 to 2 ounces of whole cloves is a good starting point.

You will also need a carrier oil, which is the base liquid that will extract and hold the clove compounds. Popular carrier oil options include:
- Jojoba oil — absorbs well into skin and has a long shelf life
- Sweet almond oil — light texture, commonly used in aromatherapy
- Coconut oil — solid at room temperature, good for balms and salves
- Olive oil — inexpensive and readily available, though has a stronger smell of its own
- Grapeseed oil — lightweight and neutral-smelling
Additional supplies include a mortar and pestle or spice grinder to crush the cloves, glass jars with tight-fitting lids, cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer, and a dark location for storage. You may also want labels and a marker to identify your finished product and note the date it was made. All of these materials are inexpensive and commonly found in kitchen supply stores or online. The total cost for materials to make a small batch of clove oil typically ranges from $5 to $15.
Practical Takeaway: Gather whole dried cloves, a carrier oil of your choice, glass jars, cheesecloth, and basic kitchen tools. Starting with 1 to 2 ounces of cloves and 1 cup of carrier oil creates a manageable first batch at minimal cost.
The Cold Infusion Method: A Gentle Extraction Process
The cold infusion method is the most popular way to make clove oil at home because it requires no heat and preserves the delicate aromatic compounds. This method typically takes 2 to 3 weeks but results in a flavorful, fragrant oil. Begin by measuring out your dried cloves and crushing them lightly with a mortar and pestle. You want to break them open without grinding them into a fine powder—larger pieces work better for infusion. This crushing step increases the surface area of the cloves, allowing more of their oils and compounds to transfer into your carrier oil.

Place the crushed cloves into a clean glass jar and pour your chosen carrier oil over them until the cloves are completely covered, with about 1 to 2 inches of oil above the clove material. Use a ratio of approximately 1 part cloves to 4 parts carrier oil as a starting point. Seal the jar tightly and place it in a dark cupboard, closet, or cabinet. Light exposure can degrade the quality of the oil, so choose a location away from direct sunlight. The jar should remain undisturbed in this dark location, though you can gently shake it once every few days if desired.
After 2 to 3 weeks, the oil will have absorbed the clove flavors and aromas. You can test the strength by smelling the oil—a strong, warm clove scent indicates good infusion. Some people prefer to strain at 2 weeks for a lighter flavor, while others wait the full 3 weeks for maximum strength. When ready, pour the oil through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer into a clean jar, capturing the infused oil while leaving behind the solid clove material. Store the finished oil in a cool, dark place. Properly made clove oil lasts 6 months to 1 year when stored in sealed glass containers away from heat and light.
Practical Takeaway: Crush whole cloves lightly, combine with carrier oil in a 1:4 ratio, seal in a dark glass jar, and wait 2 to 3 weeks. Strain and store in sealed containers in a cool, dark location for long shelf life.
The Heat-Assisted Method: Faster Results Through Gentle Warming
If you prefer a quicker process, the heat-assisted method reduces infusion time from weeks to hours. This method requires care to avoid damaging the delicate aromatic compounds through excessive heat. Begin by crushing your dried cloves as described in the cold infusion method. Heat your carrier oil to a gentle temperature—aim for 150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, which is warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn your finger if held briefly in the oil.

A reliable way to achieve this temperature is to use a double boiler setup. Fill a large pot with water and place a heat-safe glass bowl on top, ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water. Pour your carrier oil into the glass bowl and warm it gently over low to medium-low heat. You can use a cooking thermometer to monitor temperature if you have one. Once the oil reaches the target temperature, remove it from heat and stir in your crushed cloves. Let the mixture cool completely to room temperature while the cloves infuse into the oil—this typically takes 3 to 4 hours.
Some people prefer an even gentler approach using a slow cooker or crockpot set to the lowest setting. Place your carrier oil in the slow cooker, add crushed cloves, cover it, and let it sit on low heat for 2 to 4 hours. This method provides consistent, mild warmth with less risk of overheating. After the infusion period, strain the mixture through cheesecloth into clean jars. The heat-assisted method produces usable clove oil in a single day, though some people find the cold method creates a slightly more complex flavor profile. Both methods produce quality products suitable for cooking, aromatherapy, and other household uses.
Practical Takeaway: Use a double boiler or slow cooker to gently warm carrier oil with crushed cloves to 150-160 degrees Fahrenheit, then cool and strain within 3 to 4 hours. This method produces usable clove oil in one day rather than weeks.
Filtering and Storing Your Homemade Clove Oil
