Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that a dentist or oral surgeon places into your jawbone. The implant serves as an anchor for a replacement tooth or bridge. Unlike dentures or other tooth replacement options, implants are surgically embedded into the bone beneath your gums, which makes them function similarly to natural teeth.

The implant itself is a small screw-like post, typically measuring about 10 millimeters in length and 4 to 5 millimeters in width. Once placed, the bone around the implant grows and fuses with the titanium through a process called osseointegration. This typically takes several months. During this healing period, the implant becomes firmly anchored in place.
After osseointegration is complete, a dentist attaches an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a connector piece that holds the replacement tooth or crown. Finally, a custom-made crown—which looks and feels like a natural tooth—is attached to the abutment. This three-part system (implant, abutment, and crown) works together to restore your ability to chew and speak naturally.
Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth. Some people use implants to support a bridge that spans the gap left by several missing teeth. Others use implants to anchor full dentures, which remain in place better than traditional removable dentures.
Titanium is chosen for implants because it is biocompatible, meaning your body's immune system does not reject it. The metal is also durable and can last 20 to 30 years or longer with proper care. This longevity distinguishes implants from other restoration options that may need replacement sooner.
Practical Takeaway: Understand that a dental implant is a long-term replacement option that involves surgery and a healing period. Unlike removable options, implants become part of your jaw structure and function much like natural teeth.
Types of Dental Implants Available in Olmsted Falls
Olmsted Falls residents exploring dental implant options will encounter several types. The most common type is the endosteal implant, which is placed directly into the jawbone. Endosteal implants come in various shapes: screw-type (also called threaded), cylinder-type, and blade-type. Screw-type implants are the most widely used because they offer good stability and have high success rates.

Another type is the subperiosteal implant, which sits on top of the jawbone but beneath the gums. This option may be considered when a patient does not have enough jawbone height or density to support an endosteal implant. Subperiosteal implants are less common than they once were, but some patients in the Olmsted Falls area may still be candidates for this approach.
Zygomatic implants represent a more specialized option. These implants are longer than standard implants and anchor into the cheekbone (zygoma) rather than the jawbone. This option is typically reserved for patients with severe bone loss who want to avoid bone grafting procedures. Very few dentists in the Olmsted Falls region may offer this specialized procedure, so referral to a specialist might be necessary.
Mini implants are another variation. These are narrower than traditional implants, usually measuring 3 to 4 millimeters in diameter compared to the standard 4 to 5 millimeters. Mini implants may be suitable for patients with limited bone width or for supporting lower dentures. However, they may not be recommended for all tooth replacement situations.
All-on-4 and All-on-6 implant systems represent a different approach to full-mouth restoration. Instead of placing an implant for each missing tooth, these systems use four or six strategically positioned implants to support a full arch of replacement teeth. These systems can reduce treatment time and costs compared to traditional full-mouth implant replacement.
Practical Takeaway: Different implant types serve different needs. Your dentist in Olmsted Falls will recommend a specific type based on your bone structure, the number of teeth needing replacement, and your overall health.
The Dental Implant Procedure: What to Expect
The dental implant process typically unfolds over several months and involves multiple appointments. Understanding each stage helps you prepare mentally and physically for treatment.

The first stage is the consultation and planning phase. During this appointment, your dentist will examine your mouth, review your medical history, and may take X-rays or 3D scans of your jaw. These images help the dentist assess bone density and determine the best placement for the implant. If you have underlying health conditions—such as diabetes or heart disease—your dentist will discuss how these might affect treatment. This is also when you will discuss costs, payment plans, and what to expect during healing.
If your jawbone lacks sufficient height or density, bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement. Bone grafting involves adding bone material to your jaw to build up the structure needed to support an implant. This material may come from your own body, from a donor, or from a synthetic source. Bone grafting adds several months to the overall timeline, but it improves the chances of successful implant integration.
The surgical placement of the implant is the second major stage. The dentist or oral surgeon numbs the area with local anesthesia. They then make an incision in the gum to expose the bone. Using specialized drilling tools, they create a hole in the bone and carefully insert the implant. The gum is then stitched closed over the implant. This procedure typically takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on complexity.
After placement, osseointegration begins. This healing period usually lasts three to six months. During this time, you must follow post-operative care instructions carefully. This includes avoiding hard or sticky foods, taking prescribed medications, and attending follow-up appointments. Some tenderness and swelling are normal in the first few weeks.
Once osseointegration is complete, your dentist will verify that the implant has fused properly with the bone, usually through X-ray confirmation. At this point, the abutment is attached. Sometimes the abutment is placed during the initial surgery, and sometimes it is placed after healing is complete. Your dentist will explain which approach applies to your case.
The final stage is crown placement. The dentist takes impressions of your mouth to ensure the crown matches your natural teeth in size, shape, and color. The crown is fabricated in a lab and then cemented or screwed onto the abutment. This appointment usually takes one to two hours.
Practical Takeaway: Plan for the implant process to take four to nine months from start to finish, with the exact timeline depending on your individual situation and whether bone grafting is needed.
Costs and Payment Options for Dental Implants in Olmsted Falls
Dental implants represent a significant investment. A single implant crown typically costs between $3,000 and $6,000 in the United States, though prices in Olmsted Falls may vary based on the specific dentist, complexity of the case, and materials used. This price usually includes the implant, abutment, and crown.

If bone grafting is needed before implant placement, add an additional $200 to $3,000 to your total costs, depending on the amount and type of bone material required. For patients needing multiple implants or full-mouth restoration, costs multiply accordingly. An All-on-4 or All-on-6 system typically ranges from $20,000 to $40,000 for a complete arch of teeth.
Most dental insurance plans cover only a portion of implant costs, if they cover implants at all. Some plans may cover 50 percent of the crown portion but not the surgical placement of the implant itself. Review your specific insurance policy to understand what percentage of costs your plan covers. Call your insurance company directly or ask your dentist's office to contact them for clarification.
Many dental offices in the Olmsted Falls area offer payment plans or financing options. These may include in-house payment plans with monthly installments spread over 12 to 24 months. Some offices partner with third-party financing companies that offer healthcare credit cards. These cards often include promotional periods with no interest if the balance is
