What Mass Save Is and How It Works
Mass Save is a collaborative energy efficiency program that serves residents and businesses across Massachusetts. The program is managed through a network of utilities and energy efficiency administrators working together to reduce energy consumption throughout the state. Understanding how Mass Save operates helps explain what rebates and programs may be available to you.

The program functions as a partnership between several Massachusetts electric and gas utilities, including Eversource Energy, National Grid, and Unitil. These utilities fund the program as part of their commitment to help customers reduce energy use. The money for rebates and programs comes from utility budgets dedicated to energy efficiency, not from government general funds.
Mass Save offers multiple pathways for learning about available rebates and programs. You can visit the official Mass Save website to explore programs by category, such as heating and cooling, insulation, or water heating. The website provides detailed information about different types of rebates, what they cover, and typical costs involved. You can also contact Mass Save directly through their phone line to speak with someone who can describe programs in more detail based on your home type and current situation.
The program organizes rebates and incentives by home improvement category. Common categories include weatherization (sealing air leaks and adding insulation), HVAC systems (furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioning), water heating, appliances, and renewable energy like solar panels. Each category has different rebate amounts and requirements. Rebates may also vary depending on your utility company and specific location within Massachusetts.
Mass Save also connects customers with approved contractors who have been trained and vetted to perform work that meets program standards. Working with approved contractors is often required to receive rebates. Contractors in the network understand program requirements and can explain what portions of a project the program may cover and what portions you would pay for directly.
Practical Takeaway: Visit masssave.com or call the program's phone line to get an overview of current programs and rebate categories. This initial step helps you understand what types of home improvements the program addresses and which areas might apply to your home.
Understanding Mass Save Rebates for Heating and Cooling Systems
Heating and cooling equipment represents one of the largest energy expenses for most Massachusetts homes. Mass Save offers rebates designed to help reduce these costs by encouraging the installation of efficient heating and cooling systems. Learning about these rebate options can help you understand what costs the program may help cover.

For heating systems, the program provides information about rebates for high-efficiency furnaces and air-source heat pumps. A high-efficiency furnace burns fuel more completely, converting a higher percentage of that fuel into usable heat for your home. Air-source heat pumps use electricity to move heat from outside air (even in cold weather) into your home, which can be significantly more efficient than traditional heating systems in many cases. Rebate amounts for these systems typically range from several hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars, depending on the specific equipment and your utility company.
Heat pump technology has advanced considerably in recent years. Modern heat pumps can operate effectively even in Massachusetts winters and may provide both heating and cooling from a single system. Some homeowners install heat pumps as their primary heating system, while others use them alongside existing furnaces. The program provides information about different configurations and their associated rebates.
For cooling, Mass Save offers information about rebates for high-efficiency air conditioners and the heat pumps mentioned above. Central air conditioning systems and ductless mini-split systems both may qualify for rebates. Rebate amounts for cooling systems are generally comparable to heating system rebates. The program also provides information about maintenance services that help existing systems run more efficiently, which may have smaller associated rebates or incentives.
The rebate process typically involves several steps. First, you learn about available programs and rebate amounts. Second, you contact an approved contractor to discuss your home's current system and your options. Third, the contractor provides a price quote for the new equipment and installation. Fourth, you determine how much the rebate would reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Some contractors can process the rebate paperwork as part of the installation process, though procedures vary by contractor.
Rebate amounts do not cover the full cost of new equipment and installation. A typical rebate might cover 20 to 40 percent of the total project cost, though this varies. You remain responsible for the remaining cost. This is important to understand when considering whether a heating or cooling upgrade makes sense for your household budget.
Practical Takeaway: Request information from Mass Save about current heating and cooling rebates, then contact 2-3 approved contractors for quotes. Comparing the equipment cost, rebate amount, and your net cost helps you make an informed decision about whether an upgrade fits your budget.
Mass Save Insulation and Air Sealing Rebates
Air leaks and inadequate insulation cause substantial energy loss in many homes. When warm air escapes in winter or cool air escapes in summer, heating and cooling systems must work harder to maintain comfortable temperatures. Mass Save provides information about rebates for addressing these issues through insulation improvements and air sealing work.

Insulation improvements typically focus on attics, basement walls, and crawl spaces. Adding insulation to an attic is one of the most cost-effective energy improvements for many homes. Attics are often poorly insulated and represent a large area where heat naturally rises and escapes. The program describes how adding insulation—whether blown-in cellulose, fiberglass, or other materials—can reduce heating and cooling costs. Rebate amounts for attic insulation vary but often range from a few hundred dollars depending on the square footage treated and current insulation levels.
Air sealing involves finding and closing gaps, cracks, and other openings where outside air leaks into your home or conditioned air leaks out. Common air leak locations include areas around windows and doors, where pipes and electrical lines pass through walls, in basement rim joists (where the foundation meets the walls), and around chimneys. Professional energy auditors use specialized equipment called blower doors to locate these leaks. The program provides information about how air sealing works and what rebates may apply.
Mass Save offers information about weatherization programs that combine air sealing and insulation work. Some of these programs target lower-income households and may have additional program features beyond standard rebates. The program website describes income-based programs and how to learn more about them. These programs may offer more substantial support than standard rebates, though procedures for participation differ from regular rebate programs.
Basement and foundation insulation presents specific considerations. Unfinished basements lose significant heat through basement walls and rim joists. Adding rigid foam insulation to basement walls or blown-in insulation to rim joists can reduce heating costs. Finished basements or basements with moisture issues require different approaches. The program provides technical information about basement insulation options and associated rebates, which typically range from several hundred dollars.
Many contractors combine air sealing and insulation work into single projects. Understanding that these are separate improvements—but often installed together—helps you follow contractor proposals and understand what the rebate covers. A contractor might recommend sealing air leaks first, then adding insulation, but these are distinct work items that may have separate rebate amounts.
Practical Takeaway: Arrange a home energy assessment through Mass Save's network to identify where your home loses energy through air leaks and inadequate insulation. This assessment provides specific information about your home's needs and what rebates may apply to recommended improvements.
Water Heating Rebates and Hot Water System Information
Water heating accounts for approximately 15 to 25 percent of household energy use, making it the second-largest energy expense in most homes after heating and cooling. Mass Save provides information about rebates for high-efficiency water heating systems that can meaningfully reduce this cost category.

The program describes several water heating technology options. Traditional tank water heaters store 40-75 gallons of hot water continuously, using energy to maintain that water at a set temperature even when you are not using hot water. Tankless (on-demand) water heaters heat water only when you turn on a tap, which can reduce standby energy losses. Heat pump water heaters use electricity efficiently to move heat from surrounding air into the water tank. Solar thermal systems use the sun's energy to heat water. Each technology has different efficiency levels, installation requirements, and rebate amounts.
Rebate amounts for water heaters typically range from $300 to over $1,000 depending on the type of system and your utility company. A high-efficiency traditional tank water heater
