A checking account is a deposit account that allows you to deposit money, withdraw funds, and make payments using checks, debit cards, or electronic transfers. KeyBank checking accounts come with features like online banking access, mobile app functionality, and ATM networks. The specific features and costs depend on which checking account type you choose, as KeyBank offers multiple account structures with different monthly maintenance fees, minimum balance requirements, and benefit packages.
KeyBank's checking accounts fall into several categories. The most basic options include accounts designed for everyday banking, while premium accounts offer additional perks like higher interest rates on savings features or cash back rewards. Some accounts have no monthly maintenance fees, while others charge fees that range from $10 to $25 per month depending on the account type and how you use it. Understanding these differences matters because they directly affect how much your account costs over time.
The bank operates in 15 states including New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. If you live outside these states, you would need to consider whether KeyBank's limited branch network works for your situation, or whether you would primarily bank online and through ATMs.
Practical takeaway: Before you begin the online process, decide which type of checking account suits your needs by reviewing KeyBank's current account options on their website and noting the differences in fees, minimum balances, and features.
Steps to Open an Account Online
Opening a KeyBank checking account online involves a straightforward process that takes approximately 10-15 minutes from start to finish. The entire transaction occurs on KeyBank's website or through their mobile application, meaning you never need to visit a physical branch to create the account. This online-only process is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The process begins by visiting KeyBank's official website and locating the section for new account opening. You will need to select the specific checking account type you want to open. KeyBank typically presents clear descriptions of each account option, showing the monthly fee structure, minimum opening deposit requirements, and key features. Read through these descriptions carefully to confirm you are selecting the account that matches your needs.
Next, you will enter personal information into the online form. This includes your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, phone number, and email address. KeyBank uses this information to verify your identity and comply with federal banking regulations. The bank runs a background check during this phase, which typically involves checking ChexSystems, a system that tracks banking history and account management patterns across financial institutions.
After entering personal details, you will need to provide information about how you want to fund the account. Most people link an existing bank account from another institution and transfer money electronically, or they provide a debit card number to fund the initial deposit. KeyBank requires a minimum opening deposit to activate the account; this amount varies by account type but typically ranges from $0 to $500 depending on which checking account you select.
Once you submit all required information, KeyBank's system processes your request. In most cases, you receive confirmation within minutes to hours. The bank sends a verification code to your phone number or email address; you enter this code to confirm your identity and ownership of the contact information you provided. This two-factor verification step protects your new account from unauthorized access.
Practical takeaway: Gather your Social Security number, current address, phone number, and information about a funding source (existing bank account or debit card) before you start the online process to complete it without interruptions.
Information You Will Need to Provide
KeyBank collects specific personal and financial information during the online account opening process. Having this information organized before you begin makes the process faster and reduces the chance of errors. Understanding what the bank asks for and why helps you prepare appropriately.

Personal identification information forms the foundation of the application. You must provide your full legal name exactly as it appears on government-issued identification. KeyBank requires your date of birth, which the bank uses to verify you are at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your state). Your Social Security number is necessary because federal banking regulations require banks to collect this information from all account holders. The bank uses your Social Security number to verify your identity through various databases and to report account information to credit bureaus if applicable.
Address information must be current and accurate. Provide your complete street address, city, state, and zip code. If you recently moved, use your current residence address rather than a previous one. KeyBank may verify this address through postal databases or other methods. You will also need a phone number where you can be reached, and an email address where KeyBank can send account confirmations and statements.
Employment information may be requested, though this varies depending on which account type you select. Some accounts ask for your employer's name and your job title. This information helps the bank develop a more complete profile of your financial situation, though the bank cannot deny you an account based on employment status for most checking account types.
For funding the account, you need information about your funding source. If you are transferring money from another bank account, have your routing number and account number ready. These numbers appear at the bottom of your checks, or you can contact your current bank to obtain them. If you are funding the account with a debit card, have the card number, expiration date, and three-digit security code available. The minimum opening deposit amount depends on the account type you selected, ranging from $0 to $500 for most KeyBank checking accounts.
Practical takeaway: Create a checklist before opening your account that includes: legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, phone number, email address, and either your bank routing and account numbers or debit card information for the opening deposit.
Account Features and Fee Structures
KeyBank's checking accounts include various features that affect how you use the account and what it costs monthly. Understanding these features and fees helps you select the right account and avoid surprises when your first statement arrives. The specific features and fees change over time, so checking KeyBank's current offerings is important before deciding.

Monthly maintenance fees represent the primary cost of maintaining a checking account. KeyBank's checking accounts vary significantly in fee structure. Some accounts charge no monthly fee if you meet certain conditions, such as maintaining a minimum daily balance or setting up direct deposit. Other accounts charge a monthly fee regardless of your balance or deposit patterns, typically ranging from $10 to $25 per month. A few accounts offer tiered fee structures, where you pay a lower fee if you maintain higher balances or pay no fee if you set up direct deposit and meet other conditions.
ATM access is an important feature because it determines where you can withdraw cash without paying a fee. KeyBank provides access to its own network of ATMs at no charge to account holders. As of recent counts, KeyBank operates approximately 1,500 ATMs across its service area. If you need cash outside KeyBank's network, the bank may charge an out-of-network ATM fee, typically between $2 and $3 per transaction. However, many KeyBank checking accounts include reimbursement for out-of-network ATM fees up to a certain number of transactions per month or per statement cycle.
Debit card access is standard on all KeyBank checking accounts. Your debit card allows you to make purchases at merchants and withdraw cash at ATMs. Most KeyBank debit cards do not charge an annual fee. The card is typically issued within 5-10 business days after account opening and arrives by mail. You can use the card to make purchases or withdraw cash while you wait for your physical card to arrive by requesting a temporary digital card through the KeyBank mobile app.
Online and mobile banking features allow you to view your balance, transfer money between accounts, pay bills, and deposit checks remotely using your phone's camera. These features are included with all KeyBank checking accounts. The mobile app is free to use and provides access to most banking functions. Online banking is accessible through KeyBank's website and works on computers and mobile devices.
Overdraft protection is available on most KeyBank checking accounts. This optional service can link your checking account to
