Understanding Black Hills Energy and Online Account Management
Black Hills Energy is a utility company that provides natural gas and electricity to customers across multiple states, including South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. The company serves more than 1.3 million customers in these regions. Like most modern utilities, Black Hills Energy offers customers the option to manage their accounts online through a web portal and mobile app, which allows account holders to view bills, track energy usage, make payments, and contact customer service without visiting a physical location or calling during business hours.

The online billing system represents a shift toward digital account management that many utility companies now provide as standard service. Understanding how to navigate this system can help customers stay organized and informed about their energy consumption and payment obligations. The platform is designed for customers who already have active accounts with Black Hills Energy and want to manage their service online.
Before accessing the online portal, customers should know that they will need basic account information, such as their account number and the service address associated with their account. This information typically appears on paper bills sent by mail. Having this information ready makes the login process faster and more straightforward.
Practical Takeaway: Locate your account number on a recent Black Hills Energy bill before attempting to set up online access. This number serves as your primary identifier within the system.
Setting Up Your Online Account Portal
To begin using Black Hills Energy's online services, customers must first create an account on the company's website. The process involves visiting the Black Hills Energy official website and selecting the option to create a new online account or register for the portal. The company typically requires customers to enter their account number, billing zip code, and the email address associated with their account or a new email they wish to use for notifications and communications.

The registration process is designed to verify that the person creating the account is either the account holder or an authorized user. Black Hills Energy uses this verification step to protect customer privacy and prevent unauthorized access to billing information. Once the system confirms the account information, customers will be prompted to create a login username and password. The company usually recommends using a strong password that includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters to enhance security.
After completing the initial registration, customers can log in to their account at any time using their chosen username and password. Many customers find it helpful to bookmark the login page or save it in their browser favorites for quick access. The online portal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means customers can check their accounts, view bills, and make payments at times that are convenient for them, regardless of business hours.
Some customers may have received a previous login from Black Hills Energy if they registered for services online before. In these cases, customers can use their existing login credentials rather than creating a new account. Those who have forgotten their password can use the "forgot password" option on the login page to reset it using their email address.
Practical Takeaway: Write down your username and password in a secure location, and use a strong password with a mix of letter types and numbers to protect your account from unauthorized access.
Viewing and Understanding Your Online Bill
Once logged into the online portal, customers can view their current and past billing statements. The online bill typically shows the same information as a paper bill, including the billing period, total charges, payment due date, and a breakdown of charges by category. Black Hills Energy bills usually separate charges into sections such as base service charges, energy usage charges, taxes, and any applicable fees or credits.

The bill will show the customer's current meter reading and the previous meter reading, which allows customers to calculate their own usage if desired. For example, if the current reading is 45,000 and the previous reading was 44,500, the customer used 500 units of energy during that billing period. Understanding this basic calculation can help customers track whether their usage is increasing or decreasing over time and identify potential reasons for changes in their bills.
The online portal often includes a detailed usage history graph or chart that displays consumption over multiple months or even years. This historical data allows customers to see seasonal patterns in their energy use. For many households, winter months show higher natural gas usage for heating, while summer months may show higher electricity usage if air conditioning is used. By reviewing this pattern, customers can better understand when their bills are likely to be higher and plan their household budgets accordingly.
Black Hills Energy bills also typically include information about budget billing programs, if the customer is enrolled in one. Budget billing is a program where the company calculates an average monthly charge based on the customer's annual usage, which can help customers avoid large seasonal spikes in their bills. The online statement will show whether the customer is on a budget billing plan and what their current average monthly payment is.
Practical Takeaway: Review your bill's usage history graph to identify your seasonal usage patterns, which can help you predict when your bills will be higher and budget your household expenses accordingly.
Making Payments Through the Online Portal
The online portal allows customers to make payments toward their Black Hills Energy bills using several payment methods. Most commonly, customers can pay using a bank account through electronic funds transfer (EFT), or by using a debit or credit card. The portal typically displays the customer's current balance and the amount due, along with the payment due date. Customers can choose to pay the full balance or make a partial payment, depending on their financial situation.

When making a payment online, customers should note that the payment processing time may vary. Many online payments are processed the same business day or within one to two business days, but this timing depends on the payment method chosen and the time of day the payment is submitted. Black Hills Energy usually displays an estimated posting date for each payment so customers know when the payment will appear on their account. It is important to allow adequate time for payment processing before the due date to avoid late fees or service disconnection.
Customers can set up automatic recurring payments through the online portal if they prefer not to log in each month to make a payment manually. With automatic payments, the chosen amount is deducted from the customer's bank account or charged to their card on a set date each month. This option can help prevent missed payments, though customers should still review their bills regularly to ensure the automatic payment amount remains appropriate for their usage.
The online portal typically maintains a payment history that shows all payments made in the past several months or years. This history serves as a record for customers and can be useful for personal recordkeeping, tax purposes, or resolving any disputes about payment timing or amounts. Some customers print or take screenshots of their payment confirmations for their personal files.
Black Hills Energy sometimes offers incentives or discounts for customers who choose automatic payments, though these offers may vary by location and change periodically. Customers can check the online portal or contact the company directly to learn about current payment incentives in their area.
Practical Takeaway: Allow at least two to three business days for online payments to process before the due date, and consider setting up automatic payments if you want to avoid logging in each month and potentially missing a payment deadline.
Tracking Energy Usage and Understanding Consumption Patterns
Black Hills Energy's online portal provides tools that allow customers to track their energy consumption in detail. Many areas served by Black Hills Energy have smart meters installed, which measure and transmit usage data more frequently than older meter types. With smart meter data, customers may be able to view their usage broken down by day or even by hour, depending on what information the company makes available in the portal.

Understanding consumption patterns helps customers identify opportunities to reduce energy use and lower their bills. For example, if a customer notices that their usage spikes significantly during certain hours of the day, they may consider shifting high-energy activities, such as laundry or dishwashing, to times when electricity demand is lower. Similarly, if a customer sees their natural gas usage increase suddenly during a warm month when heating should not be needed, this might indicate a leak or malfunction in their heating system that requires professional inspection.
The portal may also include tips or recommendations for energy conservation. These suggestions might include information about thermostat settings, weatherization measures like sealing air leaks, or upgrades to more efficient appliances. While individual conservation measures may produce only modest savings, the combination of multiple conservation efforts can result in measurable reductions in energy bills over time.
Some Black Hills Energy customers may also see comparative usage information in their online accounts, which shows how their energy consumption compares to similar homes in their area. This type of comparison can motivate customers to consider conservation strategies if they find that their usage is notably higher than average. It can also reassure customers if their usage is similar to or lower
