Understanding California Highway Patrol Traffic Tickets
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is a state law enforcement agency responsible for patrolling highways and interstates throughout California. When a CHP officer pulls you over and issues a traffic ticket, you receive a citation that documents the alleged traffic violation. This citation is an official notice that you violated a specific traffic law, and it requires action on your part.

A traffic ticket from CHP typically includes several key pieces of information: the date and time of the violation, the location where it occurred, the specific vehicle code section you allegedly violated, the officer's badge number, and the fine amount associated with the violation. The ticket will also show a date by which you must respond. Understanding what information appears on your ticket is the first step in knowing how to proceed.
California traffic violations fall into different categories. Misdemeanor violations are more serious offenses, such as reckless driving or driving with a suspended license. Infraction violations are less severe, including speeding, running a red light, or equipment violations like a broken taillight. Most CHP citations are infractions rather than misdemeanors. The category of your violation determines what options are available to you for resolving the ticket.
When you receive a CHP ticket, you have several paths forward. You can pay the fine, contest the ticket in traffic court, or request traffic school. Each option has different costs, time requirements, and potential outcomes. Some people choose to pay because the cost of fighting the ticket would exceed the fine amount. Others contest the ticket because they believe they did not commit the violation or because they want to challenge the officer's observations.
Practical Takeaway: Read your ticket carefully when you receive it. Write down the violation code, the fine amount, and the response deadline. Keep the ticket in a safe place, as you will need it for any follow-up actions. Note whether the violation is classified as a misdemeanor or infraction, as this affects your options.
How to Pay Your California Traffic Ticket
Paying a traffic ticket in California is a straightforward process, but you must complete it before the deadline shown on your citation. The deadline is typically 30 days from the date the ticket was issued, though you may see different language on your ticket depending on the county. Missing this deadline can result in additional penalties, including late fees, a civil assessment, and a report to the Department of Motor Vehicles that may affect your driving record.

California offers multiple payment methods for traffic tickets. You can pay by mail by sending a check or money order to the traffic court address listed on your citation. Payment by mail typically takes longer to process, so allow extra time before the deadline. You can also pay in person at the traffic court office during business hours. Many courts now accept payment online through their official websites, which is often the fastest method. Some courts also accept credit cards, debit cards, or electronic bank transfers. A few courts may still accept payment by phone, though this option is becoming less common.
To pay your ticket, you will need to provide certain information. Have your ticket number, driver's license number, and the case number (if shown on your ticket) ready. If paying by mail, write this information on your check or money order and include a copy of your citation if possible. If paying online, the court's website will guide you through entering this information. Most online payment systems display the exact amount due before you confirm the transaction, which helps you avoid overpayment or underpayment.
When you pay your ticket, you are generally not admitting guilt in the legal sense, though paying does mean you are accepting responsibility for the violation. In some situations, paying your fine may result in a traffic conviction that appears on your driving record and may affect your insurance rates. Before paying, consider whether traffic school might be an option for you, as this could prevent the conviction from appearing on your record in some circumstances.
Practical Takeaway: Look up your court's website using the county name and "traffic court" to find payment options specific to your location. Online payment is usually fastest and provides immediate confirmation. Keep a record of your payment, including a confirmation number or receipt, in case questions arise later about whether payment was received.
Contesting Your Traffic Ticket in Court
You have the right to contest a traffic ticket issued by a CHP officer. When you decide to fight a ticket, you will appear in traffic court before a judge or magistrate. The prosecutor (representing the state or county) must prove that you violated the traffic law. You have the opportunity to present your side of what happened and to question the officer's observations and conclusions.

To contest your ticket, you must notify the court before the deadline on your citation. This is usually done by checking a box on your citation that says you wish to contest the ticket, or by submitting a written statement to the court. Some courts allow you to submit this notice online. You cannot simply ignore the ticket and assume you will appear in court; you must formally request a court hearing. If you do not respond by the deadline, the court may issue a judgment against you by default, and you may face additional consequences.
In traffic court, you will have the opportunity to tell your version of events. You can explain why you believe you did not commit the violation or why circumstances were different from what the officer reported. The officer will also testify about what they observed. A judge will listen to both sides and make a decision about whether the violation occurred. You can represent yourself in traffic court, or you can hire a traffic attorney to represent you. Many people successfully represent themselves in traffic court cases, particularly for infractions.
When contesting a ticket, certain factors can strengthen your case. If the officer made errors on the ticket itself—such as writing the wrong vehicle code section or getting the time or location wrong—you can point this out to the judge. If you have evidence that supports your version of events, such as photographs or witness statements, bring this evidence to court. If the officer does not appear in court to testify against you, the judge may dismiss the case, though this does not happen frequently.
The cost of contesting a ticket includes your time and potentially attorney fees. Court costs may also apply if you lose. However, if you win, you typically do not pay the fine. Before deciding to contest a ticket, consider whether you have a reasonable defense and whether your time is worth the effort, since many tickets result in convictions even when contested.
Practical Takeaway: If you contest your ticket, attend your court date on time. Bring any evidence that supports your account of what happened. Dress professionally and speak respectfully to the judge. If you believe you need legal representation, contact a traffic attorney in your county for an initial consultation about your case.
Traffic School as an Alternative to Paying Fines
California traffic school is an educational program that some drivers can complete instead of paying a traffic ticket fine. When you complete traffic school, the court may dismiss the ticket, meaning you do not pay the fine and the conviction does not appear on your driving record. However, traffic school is not an option for every violation, and not every driver is eligible to attend.

Generally, you may be able to attend traffic school if you received an infraction (not a misdemeanor) for a moving violation. Moving violations include speeding, running a red light, unsafe lane changes, and similar offenses. Traffic school is typically not available for violations involving alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, or accidents. Additionally, California law limits how often you can use traffic school. You can generally use traffic school once every 18 months, though there are some exceptions to this rule.
To determine whether traffic school is available for your ticket, check the citation itself or contact the traffic court listed on your ticket. The court can tell you whether the specific violation allows for traffic school. If it does, you may have the option to request traffic school enrollment. Some courts allow you to request traffic school at the same time you respond to the ticket, while others require you to appear in court first to request permission from the judge.
Traffic school typically costs between $20 and $70, depending on the provider and course format. This cost is in addition to court fees, but it is usually less than the full fine amount. Many traffic schools now offer online courses that you can complete at your own pace from home. These courses usually take four to six hours to complete. Some traffic schools still offer in-person classroom sessions that meet in the evening or on weekends. After completing traffic school, you must submit proof of completion to the court by the deadline specified.
Choosing traffic school means you will not have the conviction on your driving record, which can help prevent insurance rate increases. This is often the biggest benefit for drivers. However,
