Understanding Your Turlock Irrigation District Water Bill
The Turlock Irrigation District (TID) serves over 150,000 people across Stanislaus and Merced counties in California. When you receive your water bill, it contains several important pieces of information that tell you how much water you used and what you owe. Understanding this bill helps you track your water usage and identify any changes in your consumption patterns.

Your TID water bill typically arrives monthly and displays your account number, service address, and billing period. The bill shows the meter reading from the start and end of your billing cycle, allowing you to see exactly how many units of water you consumed. One unit equals 748 gallons of water. The bill also indicates whether you have any additional services, such as sewer service or stormwater fees, which are often bundled into a single monthly statement.
TID charges for water based on a tiered rate structure, which means the price per unit increases as you use more water. This encourages conservation by making higher usage more expensive. Most residential customers see their first tier of usage charged at a lower rate, while any usage beyond that threshold moves to higher tiers with increased per-unit costs. The bill breaks down each tier separately so you can see exactly how much you used at each price level.
Your bill may also include fixed charges that appear every month regardless of usage. These charges cover the cost of maintaining the infrastructure that delivers water to your home, such as pipes, pumps, and treatment facilities. Understanding that part of your bill covers these essential services helps explain why even low-usage months still include a base charge.
Practical takeaway: Review your bill each month by comparing the current meter reading to the previous month's reading. This practice helps you spot unusual increases in water usage that might indicate a leak or change in your household water habits.
How to Locate Your Account and Bill Information Online
TID provides an online portal where customers can view their billing information without waiting for paper bills to arrive. To use this service, visit the TID website and look for the customer portal or online billing section. You'll need your account number and a password to log in. Your account number appears on your paper bill or in any correspondence from TID.

If you don't have a password yet, the portal typically offers an option to create one. You'll provide your account number, service address, and other identifying information to set up your account. This process takes just a few minutes and gives you immediate entry to your billing history and current account status. Many customers find this preferable to waiting for paper bills, especially if they want to review their usage right away.
Once logged in, you can view your current and historical bills, often dating back several years. This historical data is valuable for understanding your typical usage patterns across different seasons. For example, you might notice your summer bills are consistently higher due to outdoor watering and increased indoor usage during hot months. Winter bills typically show lower consumption when outdoor watering isn't necessary.
The online portal also displays your meter reading and the dates of your billing cycle. Some portals include graphs or charts that show your usage trends over time, making it easy to spot whether your consumption is increasing or decreasing. This visual representation helps many customers understand their water habits at a glance without having to do calculations.
Practical takeaway: Set up your online account and check your bill information at least once before your payment is due. This gives you time to review the charges and contact TID if you have questions about any line items.
Payment Methods and Due Dates
TID provides multiple payment methods to accommodate different customer preferences. The most common options include automatic bank transfers, online payment through the TID website, mail payment by check, and in-person payment at TID offices or authorized payment locations. Each method has its own advantages, and choosing the right one depends on your personal situation and preferences.

Automatic payment, sometimes called autopay or automatic bank draft, charges your bank account on a specific date each billing cycle. This method eliminates the worry of forgetting to pay your bill and helps ensure you never incur late fees. To set up automatic payment, you'll typically need your banking information and authorization. Many customers prefer this option for the convenience it provides.
Online payment through the TID website or third-party payment processors allows you to pay whenever you choose, as long as you submit payment before the due date shown on your bill. This method works well if you prefer to review your bill before paying or if your income arrives at irregular times. You can often save your payment information for faster payments in future billing cycles.
Mail payments require you to write a check, include your account number on the check or payment coupon, and mail it to the address shown on your bill. Allow at least seven to ten business days for a mailed check to reach TID and process through their system. This method is slower than other options, so consider posting your check earlier if your due date is approaching.
In-person payments at TID offices or authorized locations offer immediate confirmation that your payment has been received. Some customers prefer this method for peace of mind. TID office locations and hours are listed on their website and typically include their main office in Turlock and possibly satellite locations in other areas they serve.
Your bill shows a specific due date, typically about 30 days from the billing date. Paying before this due date ensures you remain current on your account. Some bills may show a grace period after the due date, but late payments can result in additional fees. If you think you'll have difficulty paying by the due date, contact TID to discuss your situation before the deadline passes.
Practical takeaway: Choose one payment method and use it consistently. Whether you prefer autopay for convenience or online payment for flexibility, establishing a routine helps prevent missed or late payments.
Understanding Charges and Rate Information
TID water rates include several different charge categories on your bill. The most significant is the water usage charge, which reflects the tiered pricing structure. In 2024, TID's rates vary depending on your customer classification (residential or commercial) and your consumption level. Residential customers typically see lower rates on initial usage tiers and higher rates on additional tiers. This structure encourages conservation while maintaining affordability for basic water needs.

Beyond water usage charges, your bill may include sewer charges if your property connects to the municipal sewer system. These charges are based on your water usage, as the assumption is that most water entering your home eventually flows into the sewer system. Stormwater fees may also appear on your bill in some areas. These fees fund local stormwater management and flood prevention infrastructure. The amount varies based on your property's drainage characteristics and area.
Many bills also show a customer charge, which is a fixed monthly fee applied to every account. This charge covers administrative costs associated with maintaining your account, meter reading, and billing. It appears the same on every bill regardless of your usage level. Understanding that this charge is separate from usage helps you interpret your bill structure correctly.
TID publishes their current rate schedules on their website, and these rates may change annually. If you want to understand exactly how much you're being charged for each service, you can review the rate schedule that applies to your customer class. Comparing current rates to what you paid in previous years shows you how your costs may have changed over time. Water districts typically increase rates to fund infrastructure improvements and account for increased operational costs.
Some customers find their bills include references to different rate categories or service charges they don't understand. Common questions relate to why charges appear higher than expected or why two similar homes in the same area have different bills. The answers typically involve differences in water usage, the specific services each property receives, or different meter sizes. Your bill should itemize each charge with a description.
Practical takeaway: Keep copies of your bills from different seasons (such as January, April, July, and October) to understand how your charges fluctuate throughout the year and to have records for your personal files or disputes.
Identifying and Reporting Billing Issues
Occasionally, customers notice their bills seem higher than expected or see charges they don't recognize. Learning to identify potential issues helps you address problems promptly. Common billing concerns include sudden spikes in usage charges that don't match your water consumption habits, duplicate charges appearing on a single bill, or charges for services you don't believe you receive.

A sudden significant increase in your water usage charge often indicates either a leak in your plumbing system or an actual increase in household water consumption. To determine which, check for visible signs of leaks, such as wet spots in your yard, dampness in basements or crawl spaces, or the sound of running
