Understanding Pink Eye: Types and Causes
Pink eye, medically known as conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the thin, clear membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid. This condition affects millions of people each year and can stem from different sources. Understanding what type of pink eye you have is the first step in determining whether home care will work or if you need to see a doctor.

There are three main types of pink eye. Viral conjunctivitis is caused by a virus and accounts for approximately 80% of infectious pink eye cases. This type often accompanies a cold or respiratory infection. Bacterial conjunctivitis results from bacterial infection and typically causes thicker discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when the eyes react to allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites and is not contagious.
Common signs of pink eye include redness in the white of the eye, itching or burning sensation, excessive tearing, discharge that ranges from watery to thick and sticky, and sometimes swelling of the eyelids. Some people experience light sensitivity or a gritty feeling in the eye. Viral pink eye often starts in one eye and spreads to the other within a few days. Bacterial pink eye may also begin in one eye but can progress differently. Allergic pink eye typically affects both eyes simultaneously and is often accompanied by itching in the nose or throat.
The discharge from pink eye varies by type. Viral conjunctivitis usually produces clear, watery discharge, while bacterial pink eye creates thick, yellowish, or greenish discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together, especially after sleeping. Allergic pink eye discharge tends to be clear and watery but very itchy. Knowing these differences helps determine when home care might suffice and when medical attention is necessary.
Practical takeaway: Pay attention to your symptoms and the type of discharge. If you notice thick, colored discharge, increasing pain, or vision changes, these are signs you should contact a doctor rather than rely solely on home treatments.
When to Stay Home and When to See a Doctor
Not every case of pink eye requires a doctor's visit. Many viral cases resolve on their own within one to two weeks with supportive home care. However, certain situations demand professional medical evaluation. Understanding the difference helps you make informed decisions about your health care.

You should see a doctor if you experience vision changes or vision loss, severe eye pain, intense light sensitivity, or if the redness and irritation worsen despite home care after three days. Also seek medical attention if you have a weakened immune system, wear contact lenses (which carry additional infection risks), or have a history of eye problems. If the discharge becomes increasingly thick and colored, this may indicate a bacterial infection requiring antibiotic treatment. Additionally, if you suspect a foreign object in your eye or have suffered an eye injury, professional evaluation is necessary.
Home care may be appropriate for suspected viral pink eye in otherwise healthy individuals who have no vision changes and only mild to moderate symptoms. Allergic pink eye often responds well to home management combined with over-the-counter allergy medications. However, if symptoms do not improve within a week or worsen, professional evaluation becomes important.
Contact lens wearers face special considerations. If you develop pink eye symptoms while wearing contacts, remove them immediately and switch to glasses. Do not reuse the same contact lens case without thoroughly cleaning and replacing the solution. Many eye doctors recommend waiting until the infection clears before resuming contact lens use. The typical recommendation is to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after starting treatment before reintroducing contacts, though your specific eye care provider may have different guidance.
When you call to schedule a doctor's appointment for suspected pink eye, mention your symptoms and when they started. This helps the office determine how quickly you should be seen. Many primary care doctors can diagnose and treat pink eye, as can eye specialists like ophthalmologists or optometrists. Urgent care centers also treat pink eye and may have faster appointment availability than traditional doctor's offices.
Practical takeaway: Create a simple list of warning signs that would prompt you to call your doctor: severe pain, vision changes, discharge that worsens, or symptoms lasting more than a week. Keep your eye care provider's contact information readily available.
Effective Home Care Strategies for Pink Eye
Home care for pink eye focuses on comfort, cleanliness, and preventing spread to others. These strategies work best for viral and mild allergic conjunctivitis. Proper hygiene during home care is essential to prevent worsening the infection or spreading it to your other eye or to people around you.

Warm compresses provide significant relief for many people with pink eye. Soak a clean washcloth in warm (not hot) water and hold it gently against the closed eye for five to ten minutes, several times daily. This reduces discomfort and can help loosen crusty discharge. For allergic pink eye, some people find cool compresses more soothing, as cold temperatures can reduce itching and inflammation. Experiment to determine which temperature works best for your symptoms.
Cleaning the eye area properly is critical. Use a fresh washcloth or clean paper towel each time you apply a compress. Never reuse the same cloth, as this can spread bacteria or viruses. If discharge crusts over the eyelids, particularly after sleeping, gently wash the area with lukewarm water on a clean cloth before applying compresses. Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this irritates the tissue further and can spread infection.
Over-the-counter artificial tears can provide comfort and help flush irritants from the eye. Look for products specifically labeled as rewetting drops or artificial tears rather than redness-reducing eye drops. Redness reducers work by constricting blood vessels and are not appropriate for pink eye treatment. Use artificial tears as directed on the package, typically several times throughout the day. These products are especially helpful during the day when your eyes may feel particularly dry or irritated.
Taking steps to prevent spreading pink eye is equally important. Wash your hands frequently, especially before touching your face or eyes. Never share towels, washcloths, pillowcases, eye makeup, or eyeglasses. If you use eye makeup, discard any products that contacted the infected eye. Wash your hands after touching the infected eye and before touching the unaffected eye. If you have viral pink eye, most sources indicate you are contagious for about seven to fourteen days. Bacterial pink eye becomes less contagious after twenty-four hours of antibiotic use, but remains contagious without treatment.
Practical takeaway: Establish a home care routine that includes compresses three to four times daily, regular hand washing, and designated clean supplies. Keep these supplies in one location so you maintain consistency and prevent cross-contamination.
Medication Options: Over-the-Counter and Prescription
Over-the-counter products available for pink eye symptoms include artificial tears, antihistamine eye drops, and oral antihistamines. Understanding what each type does helps you select appropriate treatments. However, certain products marketed for eye redness are not suitable for pink eye and may worsen symptoms.

Artificial tears are the safest over-the-counter option for pink eye. These products lubricate the eye and help flush out irritants. Common brands include Refresh, Systane, and Blink. Look for preservative-free versions if you plan to use them frequently, as preservatives can irritate sensitive eyes over time. Artificial tears do not treat the underlying infection or allergy but provide comfort and may reduce symptoms.
Antihistamine eye drops work specifically for allergic conjunctivitis by reducing the allergic response. Products containing ketotifen or olopatadine are available over-the-counter under brand names like Zaditor and Patanol. These drops take approximately thirty minutes to work and are typically applied twice daily. They are ineffective for viral or bacterial pink eye and should not be used for those types.
Oral antihistamines like cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin), or fexofenadine (Allegra) can help with allergic pink eye, particularly if you also experience nasal or throat allergy symptoms. These medications are taken by mouth rather than applied directly to the eye. Many people find them helpful for reducing overall allergy response, which in turn reduces eye symptoms. Follow package directions for dosing.
Prescription medications become necessary in specific situations. Antibiotic eye drops or
