Understanding Social Security Benefit Start Dates: The Basics
Social Security benefits can begin at different ages depending on your birth year and personal circumstances. The age at which you can start receiving benefits is not fixed for everyone — it varies based on when you were born. This guide provides information about how Social Security determines when you can start receiving monthly payments and how your choices about when to start affect the amount you receive.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses the term "full retirement age" to describe when you reach the age at which Social Security calculates your standard monthly benefit amount. For people born in 1943 or later, this age ranges from 66 to 67, depending on your birth year. However, you have options to start receiving payments before or after reaching this age, and each choice comes with different payment amounts.
Your birth year is the primary factor that determines your full retirement age. The SSA established a graduated system where full retirement age gradually increased over time. People born between 1943 and 1954 have a full retirement age of 66. For those born between 1955 and 1960, the full retirement age increases by two months for each year of birth. Anyone born in 1960 or later has a full retirement age of 67. Understanding your personal full retirement age is the foundation for learning about your benefit start date options.
You also have the option to start benefits as early as age 62, though this results in a permanently reduced monthly payment. Alternatively, you can delay starting benefits past your full retirement age until age 70, which results in a higher monthly payment. The choice of when to start represents one of the most significant financial decisions you may make, as it affects the total amount of money you receive over your lifetime.
Takeaway: Find your birth year to determine your full retirement age, then learn how starting before, at, or after that age changes your monthly payment amount.
Early Benefits: Starting at Age 62
You may start receiving Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, regardless of your full retirement age. This option appeals to people who want to receive payments sooner rather than waiting. However, starting benefits at 62 results in a permanent reduction to your monthly payment compared to what you would receive at your full retirement age.

The reduction in monthly benefits for starting at 62 varies based on your full retirement age. For someone with a full retirement age of 67, starting at 62 means receiving approximately 70 percent of your full retirement age benefit amount. For someone with a full retirement age of 66, starting at 62 means receiving approximately 75 percent of that amount. The exact percentage depends on how many months before your full retirement age you start receiving benefits.
To illustrate with an example: suppose your full retirement age benefit amount would be $2,000 per month. If your full retirement age is 67 and you start at 62, you might receive approximately $1,400 per month instead. This $600 monthly reduction continues for your entire life. Over time, the total amount you receive is less than if you had waited, even though you started receiving payments five years earlier.
Starting at 62 may make sense for certain situations. People with health concerns that may limit their lifespan, those facing financial hardship, or those who want to retire early sometimes choose this option. Workers who have already stopped working and need income may also find early benefits valuable. However, this decision affects not only your payments but potentially payments to your spouse and family members as well.
Important considerations for early benefits include understanding how work earnings affect your payments. If you earn income from working before reaching your full retirement age, Social Security reduces your monthly benefit by a certain amount for each dollar you earn above an annual limit. This earnings test applies only to people under full retirement age and stops once you reach that age, even if you haven't started your benefits yet.
Takeaway: Starting at 62 gives you payments five to eight years earlier than your full retirement age, but your monthly payment is permanently reduced, typically by 25 to 30 percent or more.
Full Retirement Age: Starting at Your Standard Age
Your full retirement age is when Social Security pays you your standard monthly benefit amount — the amount calculated based on your lifetime earnings record. This age represents the government's definition of when you have reached retirement age, though this definition has changed over time and continues to increase for younger workers.
Starting benefits at your full retirement age means you receive 100 percent of your benefit amount as calculated by Social Security. No reductions apply, and no bonuses for waiting are added. If you were born between 1943 and 1954, your full retirement age is 66. If you were born between 1955 and 1960, your full retirement age ranges from 66 and two months to 67, depending on your specific birth year. If you were born in 1960 or later, your full retirement age is 67.
Understanding your specific full retirement age is important because it serves as the reference point for all other benefit calculations. Once you reach your full retirement age, the earnings test no longer applies, meaning you can work and earn as much as you want without any reduction to your Social Security payments. This is an important distinction from the early benefits option, where earnings can reduce your payments.
Many people think of full retirement age as the age when they should start benefits, and for some, this timing aligns with their plans. Starting at full retirement age gives you a middle ground between the reduced payments of early benefits and the increased payments of delayed benefits. You receive your full calculated amount without the penalty of an early start and without the extra work and savings of waiting longer.
If you decide to start at your full retirement age, you should understand how your benefit amount was calculated. Social Security bases your monthly benefit on your 35 highest-earning years of work. If you have fewer than 35 years of earnings, zeros are added for the missing years, which can lower your benefit amount. Working additional years, especially if those years have higher earnings than some of your earliest working years, may increase your benefit calculation.
Takeaway: At your full retirement age, you receive your standard monthly benefit — 100 percent of your calculated amount — with no reduction and no earnings limit.
Delayed Benefits: Starting After Your Full Retirement Age
If you delay starting Social Security benefits past your full retirement age, your monthly payment increases by a certain percentage for each month you wait, up until age 70. This increase in payment is sometimes called "delayed retirement credits" or "delay credits." For each 12 months you delay starting after your full retirement age, your benefit increases by approximately 8 percent per year, up to age 70.

The increase in payment amount from delaying is substantial over time. If your full retirement age benefit would be $2,000 per month, waiting one year could increase it to approximately $2,160 per month. Waiting from age 66 to age 70 (four years) could increase your monthly payment to roughly $2,640 per month or more. This higher payment continues for your entire lifetime, providing larger monthly income in your later years.
Delaying benefits may be a practical choice for several reasons. People who are still working and earning good income may not need Social Security payments yet. Those with longer life expectancies, based on family history or health status, may receive more total money over their lifetime by waiting. People who want higher guaranteed income in their later years, when other savings may be depleted, often choose to delay. Additionally, higher lifetime earnings in later working years could increase your benefit calculation if you continue working.
An important consideration for delayed benefits is spousal and family benefit amounts. If you are married, your spouse may have benefit options based on your work record. Delaying your benefits can affect when and how much your spouse receives. Similarly, if you have minor or disabled children, or if you are supporting a dependent parent, delaying your benefits may affect their benefit amounts. Understanding these family implications is important when considering whether to delay.
The decision to delay involves weighing your personal circumstances against the financial mathematics of total lifetime benefits. Someone who lives to an average life expectancy may receive roughly similar total amounts whether they start at full retirement age or delay to 70, though the monthly amounts differ significantly. Those with above-average life expectancy typically receive more money over their lifetime by waiting. Those with below-average life expectancy might receive more total money by starting earlier.
Takeaway: Delaying benefits until age 70 increases your monthly payment by roughly 8 percent per year, creating substantially
