The Morgantown DMV operates under West Virginia's Department of Transportation, which oversees all motor vehicle services across the state. The office staff handles both routine matters like license renewals and complex transactions such as commercial vehicle registrations. The building itself is situated in a central location, making it relatively accessible for residents throughout the county and surrounding areas.
Several factors affect how busy the Morgantown DMV is on any given day. The office typically experiences higher traffic during lunch hours (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and late afternoons. The first and last weeks of the month also tend to see increased volume, as people try to complete transactions before deadlines. Weather conditions occasionally impact staffing and hours, particularly during winter months in West Virginia.
The office maintains specific hours of operation that may vary seasonally. Most DMV offices in West Virginia operate Monday through Friday during standard business hours, though you should verify current hours before traveling. Some transactions may take longer than others—a simple license renewal might take 15 minutes, while a commercial vehicle registration could require 45 minutes or more.
Practical Takeaway: Before visiting the Morgantown DMV, check the official West Virginia DMV website for current hours, location details, and any temporary closures. This small step prevents wasted trips and helps you plan accordingly.

Driver's license services represent a significant portion of the office's workload. West Virginia driver's licenses are valid for five years for adults under 65 and four years for those 65 and older. The Morgantown office processes new license applications, renewals, and replacements. They also handle license suspension notifications, address changes, and name changes due to marriage or legal petition. License testing (written and driving tests) may be offered at this location, though road tests are sometimes conducted at separate testing facilities.
Vehicle-related services include registration renewal for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, commercial trucks, and specialty vehicles. The office handles initial registrations for new vehicles purchased from dealers or private sellers. Title services are also available—you can obtain duplicate titles if yours is lost or damaged, transfer titles when selling a vehicle, or add lienholder information. The office processes plates and decals, including replacement of lost or damaged plates.
Specific services include obtaining duplicate vehicle registrations, renewing commercial vehicle registrations, and handling vehicle ownership transfers. West Virginia charges different registration fees based on vehicle type, weight, and usage (commercial vs. personal). The office staff can explain current fee structures and what documents you'll need for each type of transaction.
Some services may not be available at every location. For specialized transactions or questions about commercial fleet registrations, you might need to contact the main DMV office in Charleston or call ahead. The Morgantown office can direct you to appropriate resources if they cannot complete your transaction.
Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of what you need (documents, fee amount, vehicle information) before visiting. Knowing exactly which services the Morgantown office provides helps you gather the right materials and prevents multiple trips.
Required Documents and What to Bring
Bringing correct documentation is essential for completing most DMV transactions. The specific documents you need depend on your transaction type, but several items are almost universally required. For any DMV visit, bring a valid form of identification, proof of residency, and proof of Social Security number. Valid identification includes a current passport, military ID, or out-of-state driver's license. Proof of residency can be a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement dated within the last 60 days.

For driver's license applications and renewals, you'll need proof of identity, proof of West Virginia residency, and proof of your Social Security number. Birth certificates, passports, and naturalization documents serve as identity proof. If your name has changed since your original license, bring documentation of the name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order). Minors applying for their first license need a parent or guardian present, along with parental consent documentation and proof that the parent is authorized to make medical decisions for the minor.
Vehicle registration transactions require different documents. Bring your vehicle title or proof of ownership, the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number—you can find this on your dashboard or title), proof of insurance, and proof of residency. If you're registering a vehicle you just purchased, bring the bill of sale. For commercial vehicles, you may need additional documentation such as proof of business ownership or federal employer identification numbers.
When transferring a vehicle title, bring the signed title from the seller (if it's a private sale), the bill of sale, proof of insurance, and your proof of residency. West Virginia requires proof of inspection for vehicles before registration—have your vehicle inspection certificate ready if the vehicle hasn't been inspected recently. Emissions testing is also required in certain areas of the state, including Monongalia County in some cases.
Document preparation tips can save considerable time. Make copies of important documents before your visit. If bringing original documents like birth certificates, consider bringing copies as well—staff can verify originals and you can take them home. Ensure all signatures on documents are complete and legible. If paperwork is damaged or unclear, ask the DMV staff whether it's acceptable before your transaction begins.
Practical Takeaway: Call the Morgantown DMV or visit the West Virginia DMV website to confirm the exact documents needed for your specific transaction. Different scenarios (new resident, address change, vehicle purchase) require different paperwork, and verifying beforehand prevents frustration and delays.
Fees, Payment Methods, and Processing Times
DMV fees in West Virginia vary based on the type of transaction and vehicle classification. Driver's license fees typically range from $20 to $35 depending on whether it's a new license, renewal, or replacement. Vehicle registration fees are calculated based on the vehicle's weight, type, and usage classification. A standard passenger vehicle registration might cost between $30 and $50 annually, while commercial vehicles can range significantly higher. The Morgantown office can provide specific fee quotes once they review your situation and documentation.

Payment methods accepted at the Morgantown DMV include cash, checks, and credit or debit cards. Having exact change or a card speeds up transactions, though staff can process checks as well. Some transactions may require separate payments—for example, if you're renewing a license and paying an outstanding ticket, these might be handled as separate transactions. Ask staff about payment options if you're uncertain, as specific policies may apply to certain transaction types.
Processing times depend on several factors: how busy the office is, the complexity of your transaction, and whether your documentation is complete. Simple transactions like license renewals may take 15 to 20 minutes if staffing levels are adequate and documentation is correct. More complex transactions such as new vehicle registrations, title transfers, or first-time commercial driver's license applications can take 45 minutes to an hour. During peak times (lunch hours, end of month), even simple transactions may take longer.
West Virginia offers some services that reduce in-person visits. License renewals for certain drivers may be completed by mail. The DMV website provides information about mail-in renewal eligibility, which typically applies to drivers whose licenses are current and who have no outstanding suspensions or violations. Vehicle registration renewals can also sometimes be completed online or by mail, depending on your circumstances. Checking the website before traveling can reveal whether your transaction qualifies for remote processing.
Temporary licenses and registrations are sometimes issued at the time of transaction, allowing you to drive legally while official documents are prepared and mailed. This process differs based on transaction type. Ask staff whether you'll receive a temporary document that day or if official documents will arrive by mail within a specified time
