Understanding Home Depot Truck Rental Basics
Home Depot offers truck rental services at most of its locations across the United States. The company rents several types of vehicles designed for moving and hauling purposes. These rentals are handled through Home Depot's tool rental department, which operates separately from the main store but is located within or near Home Depot locations. Unlike some rental services that require membership or special accounts, Home Depot truck rentals are available to customers who meet basic requirements and can pay the rental fee.

The rental process involves walking into your local Home Depot, visiting the tool rental desk, and arranging a rental agreement on the spot. No online pre-booking is required, though some locations may offer phone reservations. The rental desk staff will explain the terms, pricing, and vehicle conditions before you sign any paperwork. Home Depot's truck rental fleet includes pickup trucks of various sizes and cargo vans, each suited for different moving and hauling tasks.
According to Home Depot's service information, most tool rental departments operate during store hours, typically opening at 6 or 7 a.m. and closing between 9 and 10 p.m., depending on location. Rental periods can range from hourly to daily to weekly options, giving customers flexibility based on their project size. The rental agreement includes details about insurance options, fuel policies, and damage responsibility. Understanding these basics helps you prepare before visiting the rental desk and know what to expect during the transaction.
Takeaway: Visit your local Home Depot's tool rental desk during store hours to explore truck rental options. Ask staff members about available vehicle types and rental periods that match your specific needs, as options may vary slightly by location.
Types of Vehicles Available for Rent
Home Depot typically offers three main categories of vehicles: pickup trucks, cargo vans, and occasionally flatbed trailers. The most common rental option is the standard pickup truck, which usually features an open bed that measures approximately 5 to 8 feet long, depending on the model. These trucks can carry loads up to 1,500 pounds or more, making them suitable for moving furniture, appliances, and construction materials. The open design allows for easy loading and unloading without having to worry about fitting items through doorways or side openings.

Cargo vans represent another popular choice for customers needing enclosed storage space. These vans typically have interior dimensions around 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 5 feet tall, providing roughly 250 cubic feet of cargo space. Cargo vans are ideal for moving multiple household items, protecting goods from weather, and maintaining a lower profile on residential streets compared to large trucks. They generally accommodate loads up to 3,000 pounds, though weight limits vary by specific vehicle and model year.
Some Home Depot locations also rent flatbed trailers, which attach to personal vehicles and provide additional hauling capacity. These trailers work well for moving large landscaping materials, construction debris, or oversized items that won't fit in a truck bed or van. The availability of flatbed trailers varies significantly by location, so you should contact your nearest Home Depot to confirm whether this option exists in your area.
Each vehicle type comes with different rental rates, typically ranging from $19 to $75 for daily rentals, depending on the vehicle size and your location. Hourly rates for short-term use may range from $5 to $35 for a few hours. Home Depot publishes pricing information on their website and at rental desks, though rates can fluctuate based on local demand and fuel costs.
Takeaway: Consider what you're moving before visiting. Pickup trucks work well for open loads like lumber or landscaping materials, while cargo vans suit household moving and offer weather protection. Ask about trailer availability if you need maximum capacity.
Rental Pricing and Payment Options
Home Depot's truck rental pricing operates on multiple time-frame options to accommodate different project needs. Hourly rentals typically cover short trips to pickup materials, usually with a minimum time commitment of one or two hours. Daily rentals provide the most common option for most customers and represent the best value per hour for projects lasting several hours or a full day. Weekly and monthly rentals exist at some locations for extended projects or storage needs, though you should confirm availability at your specific Home Depot.

Pricing varies considerably based on your geographic location, the specific vehicle type, and current demand in your area. Urban areas and peak moving seasons (May through September) generally show higher prices than rural locations and off-season months. A pickup truck daily rental might cost $19 to $39 in many markets, while cargo vans typically range from $29 to $75 per day. Hourly rates usually work out to roughly $10 to $15 per hour for short-term rentals, making them less economical than daily rates unless you only need the vehicle for one to two hours.
Home Depot accepts multiple payment methods at rental desks, including credit cards, debit cards, and cash. A credit card is typically required as it holds a security deposit, which usually ranges from $100 to $300 depending on the vehicle type and rental duration. This deposit protects Home Depot against damage or non-return. If you return the vehicle in good condition and on time with a full fuel tank, the security deposit is released back to your account within a few business days. Some rental locations may accept other forms of payment for deposits, so asking the rental desk staff about available options is worthwhile.
Many Home Depot locations offer discounts for longer rental periods. Renting for a full week often costs significantly less per day than renting for a single day. Military members, seniors, and Home Depot reward members may receive discounts at certain locations. Checking your local Home Depot's specific pricing and any current promotions before your visit can help you understand what to expect financially.
Takeaway: Check Home Depot's website or call your local rental desk to learn current pricing for your area and vehicle type. Bring a credit card for the security deposit, and ask about discounts if you're renting for multiple days or qualify for specific promotions.
Requirements and Documentation Needed
Before renting a truck from Home Depot, you'll need to meet several basic requirements. The primary requirement is that you must be at least 18 years old, though some locations may require renters to be 21 years old for larger vehicles. You must provide a valid government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card. This requirement applies regardless of whether you plan to drive the vehicle or someone else will operate it during the rental period.

A valid credit card in your name is necessary to complete the rental transaction. The card will be used to charge the rental fee and hold the security deposit. Your name on the credit card should match the name on your identification document. While Home Depot may accept debit cards at some locations, a credit card provides the smoothest transaction and rental approval process.
You should have proof of a valid driver's license or state ID for whoever will be operating the vehicle. Home Depot typically doesn't require commercial driving licenses for their truck rentals, as these vehicles fall into personal-use categories. However, if you're operating a rental vehicle for commercial purposes as part of a business, you should discuss this with the rental desk, as certain restrictions or additional insurance requirements might apply.
Home Depot collects basic contact information during the rental process, including your phone number and address. They use this information to contact you regarding your reservation and to maintain rental records. The rental agreement you'll sign contains important information about mileage limits, fuel policies, return conditions, and damage responsibility. Reading through this agreement carefully before signing helps you understand your obligations and prevents misunderstandings when returning the vehicle.
Insurance and damage coverage are important considerations. Home Depot offers damage waiver options that protect you from paying for certain types of damage to the rental vehicle. This optional coverage typically costs $15 to $30 per day and covers damage from collisions, vandalism, and theft, though specific coverage details vary. Without this coverage, you're responsible for any damage beyond normal wear and tear, which could be costly for significant damage.
Takeaway: Bring a valid photo ID and credit card matching the ID. Review the damage waiver option carefully—while it adds to your rental cost, it provides significant protection if the vehicle is damaged during your rental period.
