Understanding Windows Version Numbers and Why They Matter
Your Windows operating system has a version number that identifies which release you're using. This number matters because different versions have different features, security updates, and system requirements. Software companies design their programs to work with specific Windows versions, so knowing your version helps you determine what programs will run on your computer and what updates you might need.

Windows version numbers have changed over the years. Older systems might run Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, while newer computers typically use Windows 10 or Windows 11. Each version has its own identification system. For example, Windows 10 has version numbers like 21H2, while Windows 11 uses similar naming conventions. These numbers tell you not just which major release you have, but also which updates have been installed on your system.
Understanding your Windows version becomes important in several practical situations. When you download software, the installer might ask what version of Windows you have. When troubleshooting computer problems, technical support specialists often need to know your exact version. If your computer seems slow or unstable, updating to a newer Windows version might help. Insurance companies and security professionals also recommend knowing your version because older Windows releases eventually stop receiving security patches, leaving your computer vulnerable to threats.
The version number also relates to the build number, which is a more specific identifier. While "Windows 10" is the main version name, your computer might be running build 19045 or another number. This build number indicates exactly which updates have been installed. Two computers with the same Windows 10 version might have different build numbers if one received more recent updates than the other.
Practical Takeaway: Write down your Windows version number and keep it somewhere safe. You'll refer to this information when installing software, troubleshooting problems, or contacting support. Knowing this one number can save you considerable time when dealing with computer issues.
Finding Your Windows Version Through Settings
The Settings application is the most straightforward way to find your Windows version number on modern computers. This method works on Windows 10 and Windows 11, which together account for over 90% of Windows computers in use. The Settings app is a graphical interface that lets you view your system information without needing technical knowledge.

To find your version through Settings, start by clicking the Windows Start button, which appears in the bottom left corner of your screen. In Windows 10, it looks like the Windows logo. Type "settings" into the search box that appears. The Settings application should show at the top of the search results. Click it to open the application.
Once Settings opens, look for an option called "System" on the left side of the window. Click on System, then look for "About" at the bottom of the menu options on the left. Click About, and your screen will display a section called "Windows specifications." In this section, you'll see "Edition" (such as Windows 10 Home or Windows 11 Pro), "Version" (showing numbers like 21H2 or 22H2), and "OS Build" (showing a longer number like 19045.2006). These three pieces of information together tell you your complete Windows version.
Some people prefer an even faster method. You can press the Windows key and the letter R at the same time to open the Run dialog box. Type "winver" and press Enter. This opens a window specifically designed to show your Windows version information. The window displays your version number prominently at the top, along with the OS build number below it.
Practical Takeaway: Remember the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + R, then type "winver" for the quickest way to see your version number. This method takes about five seconds and shows all the information you need in one window.
Using the Command Prompt to Check Your Version
Command Prompt is a text-based program that lets you type commands directly to your computer. While it sounds technical, checking your Windows version through Command Prompt requires only typing one or two simple commands. This method is useful if you prefer a traditional approach or if the graphical Settings method isn't working properly on your computer.

To open Command Prompt, click the Start button and type "cmd" into the search box. The Command Prompt application should appear in the search results. Click it to open a black window with white text. This window is Command Prompt.
At the prompt (usually showing as "C:\Users\YourName>"), type the command "systeminfo" and press Enter. Your computer will display a long list of information about your system. Scroll up to find the line that says "OS Name:" which shows your Windows version (like Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Home). Just below that, you'll see "OS Version:" which displays your version number. Further down, you'll see "System Boot Time:" and other technical details, but the OS Name and OS Version are the lines you need.
An alternative command is "ver" which gives you a quicker answer. Type "ver" and press Enter, and you'll see a shorter response that shows your Windows version directly. However, this command doesn't provide the build number, so "systeminfo" is generally more useful because it shows complete version information.
Some users prefer PowerShell, which is a more advanced version of Command Prompt. You can open PowerShell by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Windows Terminal" or "PowerShell." Then type "Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object OsVersion, OsBuildNumber" to see your version and build number in a compact format.
Practical Takeaway: If Settings isn't working or you're more comfortable with text-based interfaces, type "systeminfo" into Command Prompt and look for the "OS Version:" line. This method provides the same information as Settings but in a different format.
Understanding What the Numbers and Letters Mean
Windows version numbers follow a system that can look confusing at first glance, but each part has a specific meaning. Understanding these components helps you interpret the information you find and compare it with version numbers you might see online.

The main version identifier is a name like "Windows 10" or "Windows 11." This major version number changes infrequently, typically every few years. Within each major version, Microsoft releases numbered updates. These numbers use formats like "21H2" or "22H2." The first two digits represent the year of release (21 means 2021, 22 means 2022), and the "H" indicates which half of the year (H1 for the first half, H2 for the second half). So "21H2" means the second-half 2021 update to Windows 10.
The OS Build number is a much longer number that might look like "19045.2006" or "22621.1343." This number represents the specific compilation of Windows code. Think of it like a recipe's version number—each time Microsoft makes changes and packages a new release, the build number increases. The first portion of the build number (like 19045 or 22621) represents major updates, while the numbers after the period represent minor updates and security patches. A computer with build 19045.2006 has more recent updates than one with build 19045.2000, even though both are the same version of Windows.
The Edition is another important component. Windows comes in different editions such as Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Each edition has different features and pricing. Windows 10 Home is the standard version sold to consumers, while Windows 10 Pro adds features like remote desktop and encryption tools. Knowing your edition helps you understand what features your computer can access and whether you might benefit from upgrading to a version with additional capabilities.
Release channels also matter, though you won't see this information in your version number. Microsoft releases updates on different schedules. The Current Channel gets updates every month, while the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) receives updates less frequently but provides longer support periods. Most home users have Current Channel versions, while businesses often prefer LTSC for stability.
Practical Takeaway: Remember that your complete Windows identification includes three parts: the major version (Windows 10 or 11), the update version (like 21H2), and the build number (like 19045.2006). When describing your Windows to someone, provide all three for complete clarity.
