Learn How to Replace Batteries in Common Devices

Understanding Battery Types and Where They're Found

Batteries power many devices in your home, from remote controls to wireless mice to flashlights. Understanding what type of battery your device uses is the first step toward replacing it successfully. The most common household batteries fall into a few main categories: alkaline batteries (like AA and AAA), rechargeable batteries (like NiMH), button cell batteries (the small round ones), and built-in batteries (permanently sealed inside devices).

Alkaline batteries are the most popular type for everyday devices. AA batteries measure 14.5 millimeters in diameter and 50.5 millimeters in length, while AAA batteries are smaller at 10.5 millimeters in diameter and 44.5 millimeters in length. These batteries typically last between 5 to 10 years when stored properly and can power devices for months or even years depending on usage. A typical AA alkaline battery can produce about 2,850 milliamp-hours of energy.

Button cell batteries come in many varieties, including CR2032, LR44, and SR626. These are commonly found in watches, hearing aids, calculators, and car key fobs. The CR2032, which is lithium-based, is one of the most widely used button batteries and measures 20 millimeters in diameter. Button batteries are more expensive per unit than AA or AAA batteries but last longer in low-drain devices.

Rechargeable batteries, such as those using Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology, are becoming more common in cordless tools, cameras, and gaming controllers. These batteries can be charged hundreds of times before needing replacement, making them cost-effective over time. A single NiMH AA battery might cost $3 to $5, but it can be charged 500 to 1,000 times, significantly reducing long-term expenses compared to alkaline batteries.

Practical takeaway: Before replacing any battery, check your device's manual or look inside the battery compartment to identify which battery type you need. Write down the battery size (AA, AAA, CR2032, etc.) and keep this information handy for future purchases.

Locating and Opening Battery Compartments Safely

Finding the battery compartment in your device is usually straightforward, but the method varies by device type. Most devices have a clear indication of where batteries go, either through labeling, a compartment cover, or a battery icon printed on the exterior. For remote controls, the battery compartment is typically on the back, accessed by sliding or lifting a cover. For wireless mice and keyboards, the compartment is often on the bottom of the device.

To open a battery compartment safely, start by turning off the device if possible. This prevents accidental activation while you're working. Many compartments have a sliding cover with an arrow indicating the direction to push. Others have a small hinged door that opens upward. Some compartments require a coin or screwdriver to open—look for a small slot or screw head on the cover.

When opening compartments on expensive or delicate devices like cameras or digital thermostats, work slowly and carefully. If a cover seems stuck, don't force it. Instead, try gently wiggling it while applying steady pressure in the direction indicated. For compartments held by screws, use a screwdriver that matches the screw size exactly—using an incorrect size can strip the screw head and make it impossible to open later.

Inside the compartment, you'll see slots or holders indicating how many batteries fit and in which direction they should be installed. Most compartments show a plus (+) and minus (−) symbol indicating the positive and negative terminals. This is crucial information for the next step. Some compartments contain a small metal spring or contact point that helps hold batteries in place and ensure good electrical contact.

Pay attention to any dust, corrosion, or debris inside the compartment. If you see white or blue crusty material, this indicates battery leakage from old batteries. Gently clean this away with a dry cloth or cotton swab before installing new batteries. Corrosion can prevent new batteries from working properly.

Practical takeaway: Take a photo of the battery compartment interior before removing old batteries so you can remember the correct orientation (which direction the + and − signs point) when installing new ones.

Removing Old Batteries Correctly

Removing old batteries requires care to avoid damaging the device and to handle potentially leaking batteries safely. Begin by using your fingers or a non-metal tool to gently lift the old battery out of its slot. Most batteries come out easily with gentle upward pressure. If a battery is stuck, try tilting it slightly or using a plastic spoon or wooden stick to carefully pry it out. Never use metal objects like screwdrivers, as they can scratch the compartment or cause a short circuit.

Pay special attention to the battery's orientation as you remove it. Notice which direction the positive and negative ends faced. If the battery is difficult to remove, check whether you're pushing in the correct direction—some compartments require you to push down slightly before lifting, while others slide sideways.

If you find that old batteries have leaked, take extra precaution. Battery acid can irritate skin and damage device components. Wear disposable gloves if available. Use a dry cotton swab or tissue to carefully wipe away any corrosion inside the compartment. For significant corrosion, use a slightly damp (not wet) cotton swab followed by a dry one. Allow the compartment to dry completely before installing new batteries.

Never mix old and new batteries in the same device. Worn batteries have lower voltage and can't keep up with fresh ones, causing both to drain faster and potentially creating a safety issue in some devices. If your device uses multiple batteries, replace all of them at the same time. Also, don't mix different battery brands or types—for example, don't use one alkaline and one rechargeable battery together, as they have different discharge rates.

Store old batteries in a cool, dry place if you plan to recycle them. Many retailers like Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe's have battery recycling programs that accept old batteries at no cost. Never throw batteries in the trash, as they can leak harmful chemicals into soil and water.

Practical takeaway: When removing old batteries, mark the direction of the positive and negative terminals on a piece of paper or by taking a photo so you install new batteries in the correct orientation without relying on memory.

Installing New Batteries with Correct Polarity

Installing new batteries correctly is essential for your device to function and to avoid potential damage. The most common mistake people make is installing batteries backward, with the positive and negative terminals reversed. This prevents the device from working and can potentially damage it if the device draws significant current.

Before inserting a new battery, take a moment to identify its terminals. Every battery has a positive (+) terminal, typically on top, and a negative (−) terminal on the bottom. Look at the battery compartment markings to determine which direction the positive terminal should face. Most compartments are marked with + and − symbols. In some devices, the positive terminal faces up; in others, it faces down. Follow the markings in your specific device.

Insert the new battery gently into its slot, aligning the positive end with the positive marking. Push slowly until the battery sits flat in the compartment. You should hear or feel a slight click as the battery makes contact with the metal springs or terminals inside. Don't force the battery—if it doesn't fit easily, stop and check the orientation. Forcing a battery with incorrect polarity can damage the compartment contacts.

For devices with multiple batteries, pay careful attention to ensure all batteries have the same orientation. A typical remote control with two AA batteries should have both positive terminals facing the same direction, usually toward the back of the compartment. If your device uses four AAA batteries, all four should be installed with consistent polarity.

After installing the battery, close the compartment cover. For sliding covers, slide in the direction indicated by the arrow. For hinged covers, gently close until you hear a click. If your compartment has a screw, replace it and tighten it securely but not so tight that you risk stripping the screw hole. A snug fit is all you need.

Test your device immediately after installation. Turn it on or press a button to verify it works. If nothing happens, the battery may be installed backward or may be faulty. Open the compartment again and double-
