Understanding New York DMV Ticket Payment Methods
When you receive a traffic ticket in New York, paying it on time is important to avoid additional penalties and potential license suspension. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles and local traffic courts offer several ways to pay your citation, and understanding each option helps you choose what works best for your situation.

New York processes thousands of traffic tickets monthly across its courts. According to New York State court records, approximately 1.2 million traffic violations are issued annually throughout the state. Each ticket includes information about payment methods specific to the court that issued it. The payment options available depend on factors such as the type of violation, which court has jurisdiction, and how you prefer to handle the transaction.
Payment methods generally fall into several categories: in-person payments at court locations, mail-based payments, phone payments, and online payments through court websites. Some violations may be handled through the DMV directly, while others go through local traffic courts or city courts. Understanding these differences prevents confusion and helps you avoid paying the wrong entity or missing payment deadlines.
Each payment method has different requirements, fees, and processing times. Some methods provide immediate confirmation of payment, while others take several business days to process. Knowing these details before you pay helps you plan ahead and avoid complications.
Practical takeaway: Locate the name and location of the court that issued your ticket by checking the citation itself. This information determines which payment methods are available to you and where your payment should be sent.
Paying Your Ticket Online Through Court Websites
Many New York courts now offer online payment systems for traffic tickets. This method allows you to pay from home using a computer or mobile device, often without visiting a courthouse. Online payment typically requires your ticket number, driver's license number, and basic personal information to access your violation record.

The New York State Unified Court System has expanded online payment capabilities over recent years. As of 2024, most traffic courts across New York counties offer some form of online payment through their official court websites. To find your court's online payment system, you need to know which court issued your ticket—this information appears on the citation itself.
Online payment systems usually accept credit cards, debit cards, and sometimes electronic bank transfers. Payment processing fees typically range from $2 to $5 per transaction, depending on the court and payment method. For example, using a credit card might incur a higher processing fee than paying through an ACH bank transfer. These fees are added to the ticket fine amount, so your total cost includes both the violation penalty and the transaction fee.
Processing times for online payments vary. Some courts provide immediate confirmation that your payment was received, while others process payments within 1-3 business days. You should receive a confirmation number when you submit payment online. Keep this confirmation number for your records in case questions arise later about whether your payment was processed.
Not all courts have fully operational online payment systems yet. If the court on your ticket does not list an online option, contact the court directly to confirm available payment methods. Court phone numbers and websites appear on your citation.
Practical takeaway: Before paying online, write down your ticket number and confirmation number in a safe place. These numbers prove that you paid and protect you if a payment issue occurs later.
Paying by Mail: Step-by-Step Process
Mailing a check or money order to the court is a traditional payment method that remains available throughout New York. This method works well if you prefer not to use electronic payment or if your court does not offer online options. Payment by mail requires you to send your payment to the correct court address, include your ticket information, and allow time for processing.

To pay by mail, obtain the mailing address from your ticket or the court's website. Your citation should list the court's address under "Make Payment to" or similar language. Never send payment to the DMV's central office unless specifically instructed—local courts typically handle ticket payments. The court's website or a phone call to the court can confirm the correct mailing address.
Include the following items when mailing your payment: a check or money order in the amount shown on your ticket, a copy of your ticket or citation, and a note including your name, driver's license number, and ticket number. Do not send cash through the mail. Money orders are safer than checks if you are concerned about privacy or account information security.
Mail processing takes time. Standard postal delivery typically requires 3-5 business days, and courts may need another 1-2 weeks to process and record your payment. To avoid late payment penalties, mail your payment well before the due date listed on your citation. Some people mail their payments 2-3 weeks early to account for mail delays and processing time. If your due date is within 10 days, consider using a faster payment method.
Keep a copy of your cancelled check or money order receipt for your records. If you use a money order, the receipt shows the amount and date of payment. These documents prove payment if the court later claims they did not receive it, which occasionally happens with mailed payments.
Practical takeaway: Photograph your check or money order before mailing it, along with your ticket, as proof of what you sent. This documentation protects you if payment is lost in the mail.
Paying Over the Phone: What to Know
Phone payment is available through many New York traffic courts. This method allows you to pay your ticket by speaking with a court clerk or through an automated phone system. Phone payments process quickly and provide confirmation during the call, making this option useful when your payment deadline is approaching.

To pay by phone, call the court listed on your ticket during business hours. Most New York courts operate phone payment lines Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The court's phone number appears on your citation. Some courts use automated systems where you enter your ticket number and payment information using your phone keypad, while others connect you to a person who processes the payment.
When calling, have the following information ready: your ticket or citation number, driver's license number, the fine amount from your ticket, and a valid credit card or debit card. The court will verify your identity using information from the ticket, then process your payment. The entire process typically takes 5-10 minutes.
Phone payments usually incur processing fees similar to online payments, ranging from $2 to $5 depending on the court. Ask about the total amount due, including any processing fees, before the court processes your card. You should receive a confirmation number during the call. Write this number down immediately and keep it with your ticket documentation.
Be aware that phone lines can be busy, especially near payment deadlines. If you reach a busy signal or long wait, try calling early in the morning or later in the afternoon when fewer people are calling. Some courts offer better phone access on certain days of the week.
Practical takeaway: Call the court a few days before your due date to ensure you have the correct phone number and to learn about their specific phone payment procedures. This preparation prevents last-minute confusion.
In-Person Payment at Court Locations
Paying your ticket in person at the courthouse allows you to handle payment immediately and receive a receipt on the spot. This method eliminates uncertainty about whether your payment was received and processed. In-person payment works well if you live near the courthouse or prefer to resolve the matter directly.

To pay in person, visit the court listed on your ticket during business hours, usually 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Most New York courts do not operate on weekends or state holidays. Bring your original ticket, a valid photo ID, and payment in the form of cash, check, or money order. Not all courts accept credit cards at in-person payments, so confirm before you go.
Locate the traffic violations or violations bureau when you enter the courthouse. Court employees direct you to the correct office. Arrive early in the day if possible, as afternoon hours can have longer lines. During the end of each month, when many payment deadlines occur, courts experience heavier traffic. If you have flexibility, visiting mid-month often means shorter wait times.
The court staff will take your ticket, verify the information, accept your payment, and provide you with a receipt. Keep this receipt for your records. It shows the amount paid, the date, and a confirmation that the court received your payment. This receipt serves as proof if any question arises about your payment later.
