Understanding San Francisco's Passport Locations and Services
San Francisco has several places where you can handle passport business. The city's main passport acceptance agency is located downtown and handles many routine services. Additionally, post offices and libraries throughout San Francisco accept passport applications and renewals. Each location has different capabilities and hours of operation.

The San Francisco Passport Agency, located at 95 Hawthorne Street, processes passports for customers throughout Northern California. This facility handles new passports, renewals, replacements, and expedited services. It's specifically designed for passport work, so staff members focus exclusively on this service. The facility operates by appointment only, meaning you cannot walk in without scheduling a time slot in advance.
Post offices throughout San Francisco accept passport applications and supporting documents. Many neighborhoods have post offices that participate in the passport acceptance program. These locations can accept applications but do not issue passports on-site. After submission, your application travels to a passport agency for processing and printing. Post offices typically have more flexible hours than the dedicated passport agency, though wait times vary by location.
Libraries in San Francisco also participate in passport acceptance. Several branches offer acceptance services during regular library hours. This can be convenient if you're already using the library for other purposes. Like post offices, libraries accept applications but do not produce finished passports.
Each location type serves different purposes. The passport agency handles expedited services and complex cases. Post offices and libraries work for standard applications. Understanding these differences helps you choose the right location for your specific situation. Some people schedule at the main passport agency while others prefer their neighborhood post office.
Practical Takeaway: Visit the official San Francisco passport locations website to find the specific address, hours, and services available at each location near you. Knowing the exact location and its capabilities prevents wasted trips.
How to Schedule Your San Francisco Passport Appointment
Scheduling a passport appointment in San Francisco happens through the official U.S. State Department appointment system. You do not call individual locations or walk in without an appointment. The online booking system lets you see available dates and times, then reserve a slot that works with your schedule.

To schedule, visit the State Department's passport appointment scheduling website. You'll enter your zip code or city to find nearby locations, then select the service you need. The system shows which facilities offer that specific service. For example, if you need expedited processing, you'll only see locations that provide expedited services.
Once you select a location, the system displays available appointment dates and times. San Francisco locations typically show openings ranging from a few days to several weeks into the future, depending on demand. High-demand times like summer and holiday seasons fill up faster. Appointments in early morning or late afternoon sometimes have more availability than midday slots.
The appointment booking requires basic information including your name, phone number, and email address. You'll also indicate what type of service you need. The system sends a confirmation via email with your appointment details. Save this confirmation and bring it with you to your appointment. If you need to reschedule, you can typically modify your appointment online through the same system.
Appointment availability changes regularly as slots fill and new slots open. If you don't see a convenient time, checking back a few days later often reveals newly available appointments. Some people set phone reminders to check for cancellations during their target timeframe.
Practical Takeaway: Before booking, gather the exact documents you'll need so you know which service type to select (new passport, renewal, replacement, expedited, etc.). This ensures you book at a location that actually provides your specific service.
Required Documents and What to Bring to Your Appointment
Showing up with the correct documents is crucial for a successful passport appointment. Missing documents mean your appointment cannot proceed, and you'll need to reschedule. Different situations require different document combinations. Understanding your specific requirements before your appointment prevents these delays.

For a new passport, you need several items. A government-issued photo ID serves as identification verification. Acceptable IDs include a driver's license, state ID, military ID, or other official documents. You also need proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or previous passport. The birth certificate must be an official copy with a seal, not a photocopy or certified copy from your doctor's records. Additionally, you need a passport photo meeting specific requirements: 2x2 inches, taken within six months, showing your face directly facing the camera.
For passport renewal by mail, requirements differ. If your current passport is still valid, undamaged, and issued when you were age 16 or older, you may renew without an appointment. However, if you're renewing in person in San Francisco, you'll bring your current passport plus a new photo. Some renewal situations require additional documents like a marriage certificate if your name has changed.
Replacement passports (for lost, stolen, or damaged passports) require different documentation. You'll need an ID and proof of citizenship like a new passport application. If your passport was lost or stolen, you may need to provide a written statement explaining the circumstances. A police report isn't always required but provides useful documentation of theft.
For expedited services, bring all standard documents plus documentation of your need for faster processing. Acceptable proof includes airline tickets showing travel within two weeks, conference registration, or employment verification requiring travel. Expedited processing costs more than routine service and takes about 1-2 weeks instead of 4-6 weeks.
Payment is also essential. The San Francisco Passport Agency accepts credit cards, debit cards, checks, and money orders. Different passport types have different fees. A new adult passport costs around $130, a new passport book and card together costs approximately $165, and renewals are about $110. Expedited processing adds extra fees.
Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents for your specific situation and verify each item is in your bag before leaving for your appointment. This prevents arriving unprepared and having to reschedule.

When you arrive, check in at the reception area with your confirmation email or appointment notice. Staff verify your identity and appointment details. You'll then move to a processing window where an agent reviews your documents. The agent checks that all required documents are present and complete. They verify your birth certificate is official, your ID is current, and your photo meets requirements. This review process ensures everything is correct before moving forward.
The agent will ask questions to confirm your information. Standard questions include your full name, date of birth, parents' names (for first-time passport applicants), and reason for needing a passport. For renewals, they
