What to Bring: Documents You'll Need
Bringing the right documents is one of the most important steps in having a successful visit to the DMV. Minnesota has specific rules about which documents are required for different types of transactions. If you arrive without the proper paperwork, staff may not be able to process your request, and you'll need to return on another day. Understanding what to bring depends on what you're trying to do at the station.

For a license renewal, you typically need your current Minnesota driver's license. If your license has been lost or stolen, you'll need a different set of documents to prove your identity. Acceptable identity documents include a passport, passport card, military ID, or permanent resident card. Some transactions may require additional proof of residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement showing your current Minnesota address.
If you're obtaining a license for the first time or moving from another state, bring more documentation. You'll need proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and proof of Minnesota residency. Proof of identity might include a state ID, passport, or military identification. For Social Security number verification, bring your Social Security card, W-2 form, or tax return. Proof of residency can be a utility bill from the last 30 to 60 days, a mortgage statement, rental agreement, or lease.
For road tests, bring your current instruction permit or license and proof of insurance for the vehicle you'll be testing. Some people also bring their own vehicle for testing, while others may use a test vehicle provided by the station. Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement and comfortable shoes suitable for operating vehicle pedals. Avoid overly loose clothing that might interfere with pedals or the steering wheel.
If you're changing your name, bring documentation showing the legal name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Keep all original documents with you during your visit, as staff may need to examine them. Bring copies if you want to leave them on file.
Takeaway: Create a checklist based on your specific transaction before leaving home. Taking five minutes to gather the right documents can save you a trip and reduce wait time at the station.

Knowledge tests for driver's licenses and motorcycle endorsements are administered at the station. Minnesota requires first-time drivers to pass both a knowledge test and a road test. The knowledge test consists of multiple-choice questions about traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. Test questions come from the Minnesota Driver's Manual, which is available online and in print. The test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete, though the exact time varies depending on how carefully you read each question. Most people receive their test results immediately after completion.
Road tests are also conducted at the station. These practical driving tests assess your ability to control a vehicle, follow traffic laws, and react to road conditions. Road test appointments are typically scheduled for 30-minute slots. The examiner will have you perform tasks such as basic vehicle operation, turning, parking, stopping, and merging. Testing staff evaluate your judgment, coordination, and understanding of traffic laws. You generally receive results on the same day as your test.
License renewal services are available for those whose licenses are expiring or have recently expired. Renewals can often be handled quickly if you have all required documents. Minnesota licenses last eight years for most adults, though renewal periods may differ for seniors and commercial license holders. The station can process both standard and REAL ID-compliant licenses, though the REAL ID option requires additional documentation.
The station also handles identification document services, including original license issuance, replacement licenses for lost or stolen documents, and name or address changes on existing licenses. Vehicle-related services may include vehicle registration information and title questions, though some vehicle transactions may need to be handled through other Minnesota Department of Public Safety offices.
Takeaway: Call the Elk River station before your visit to confirm they offer the specific service you need. Some specialized services may only be available at certain locations or by appointment.

The Minnesota Driver's Manual is your primary study resource. This manual is available as a free PDF download from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website and can also be obtained in print at the Elk River station or other DMV locations. The manual covers topics like speed limits, traffic signals, parking rules, right-of-way principles, and what different road signs mean. Most test questions come directly from information in this manual. Spending time reading and reviewing the manual is the most effective way to prepare.
The knowledge test typically contains 40 questions, though the exact number may vary. Questions are in multiple-choice format, with four answer options for each question. You need to answer most questions correctly to pass—usually around 32 correct answers out of 40, though specific passing scores can be confirmed at the station. You have an unlimited amount of time to complete the test, so you can take as long as you need to read each question carefully and think about the answer.
Study tips that many people find helpful include reading the manual multiple times, focusing on sections that seem confusing, and practicing with sample questions if they're available. Some online resources offer practice tests based on Minnesota's test format. When taking the actual test at the station, read each question carefully and don't rush. If a question is unclear, you can ask the test administrator for clarification on what the question is asking, though they cannot help you choose an answer.
Common areas that test-takers sometimes struggle with include understanding right-of-way rules in different situations, knowing the meaning of less common road signs, and understanding the safe following distance and speed adjustments in various weather conditions. Reviewing these sections of the manual an extra time can be beneficial. Remember that the test is designed to measure practical knowledge that will help you drive safely, not to trick you.
Takeaway: Allocate at least several hours to studying the Minnesota Driver's Manual before your test date. Many people who feel unprepared benefit from spreading their study over several days rather than trying to learn everything the night before.
