Understanding Gastritis: What Happens in Your Stomach
Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining. Your stomach produces acid to break down food, and a protective layer of mucus normally shields the stomach wall from this acid. When that protective lining becomes irritated or damaged, the underlying tissue swells and causes pain, nausea, or discomfort. This condition affects millions of people each year.

According to medical literature, gastritis can develop gradually or come on suddenly. Acute gastritis develops quickly over a short period, while chronic gastritis develops slowly over months or years. Understanding which type you may have helps you recognize your symptoms and know what responses might work.
Common causes of gastritis include infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or aspirin, excessive alcohol consumption, severe physical stress, and autoimmune conditions. Less commonly, bile reflux or extreme psychological stress can trigger it. Some people experience gastritis after eating spicy foods or drinking too much caffeine, though these are usually temporary irritations rather than true gastritis.
Symptoms vary among people. Some experience gnawing stomach pain, a burning sensation between meals or at night, nausea, loss of appetite, or vomiting. Others have bloating, burping, or black or bloody stools—which require medical attention. Some people have no symptoms at all and discover gastritis only during testing for other reasons.
Practical takeaway: Keep notes about when your stomach discomfort occurs, what you eat, and what medications you take. This information helps you and your healthcare provider identify patterns and possible triggers specific to your situation.
Dietary Changes That May Reduce Stomach Irritation
What you eat directly affects your stomach lining. Research shows that certain foods irritate an inflamed stomach while others are gentler. Learning which foods your stomach tolerates helps you manage gastritis symptoms at home without medication.

Foods that tend to irritate a sensitive stomach include spicy dishes, high-fat foods, citrus fruits and juices, tomato-based products, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages. These can increase stomach acid production or irritate the already-inflamed lining. However, individual tolerance varies—some people react strongly to spicy food while others tolerate it well.
Gentler foods that may be easier on your stomach include lean proteins like chicken and fish, whole grains, vegetables like broccoli and green beans, bananas, oatmeal, and low-fat dairy products. Bone broth, vegetable broths, and soups made with mild ingredients may soothe the stomach. Rice, bread, crackers, and pasta prepared simply without heavy sauces are often well-tolerated.
Meal timing matters as much as food choice. Eating smaller meals more frequently rather than three large meals reduces the amount of acid your stomach must produce at one time. Leaving 2-3 hours between your last meal and bedtime may reduce nighttime symptoms. Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly gives your digestive system time to work properly without overwhelming it.
A practical example: Instead of a large lunch of pasta with heavy cream sauce, try eating a smaller bowl of pasta with olive oil and mild herbs, then have a snack of fruit or yogurt two hours later. This spreads nutrition throughout the day and reduces acid demand on your stomach.
Practical takeaway: Start keeping a food journal to track which foods trigger or worsen your symptoms. Write down what you ate, when you ate it, and how your stomach felt afterward. After two weeks, review patterns to identify your personal trigger foods.
Lifestyle Habits That Support Stomach Healing
Beyond diet, daily habits significantly affect how your stomach manages inflammation. Sleep quality, stress levels, physical activity, and smoking status all influence gastritis symptoms and recovery.

Sleep position affects stomach acid flow. Sleeping on your left side keeps acid in the stomach rather than flowing into the esophagus. Elevating the head of your bed by 6-8 inches using a wedge pillow or bed risers reduces nighttime acid reflux. Avoid lying down for at least 3 hours after eating. If nighttime symptoms wake you frequently, adjusting sleep position and timing may reduce discomfort without medication.
Stress reduction has measurable effects on gastritis. Chronic stress increases stomach acid production and reduces blood flow to the stomach lining, both of which worsen inflammation. Activities that reduce stress include walking, yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature. Research published in gastroenterology journals shows that people who practice stress-reduction techniques report fewer and less severe gastritis symptoms.
Smoking and alcohol significantly irritate the stomach lining. Smoking reduces the mucus layer that protects your stomach and increases acid production. Alcohol erodes the protective lining directly. Even if you've smoked or drunk alcohol for years, reducing or eliminating these habits typically improves symptoms within weeks as the lining begins to heal.
Regular, moderate physical activity supports digestion and reduces stress. Gentle exercise like walking for 20-30 minutes most days promotes healthy stomach function. However, intense exercise on a full stomach can trigger symptoms, so allow digestion time before vigorous activity.
Practical takeaway: Choose one lifestyle change to focus on this week—perhaps better sleep positioning, a daily 15-minute walk, or reducing alcohol consumption. After one week, evaluate how this change affects your symptoms before adding another.
Over-the-Counter Options and When They Help
Several types of over-the-counter medications can reduce gastritis symptoms by either decreasing acid production or protecting the stomach lining. Understanding what each does helps you use them appropriately for your situation.

Antacids like calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, or sodium bicarbonate work quickly by neutralizing existing stomach acid. They provide relief within 15-30 minutes and typically last 1-3 hours. These work best for occasional, mild symptoms. They don't prevent acid production, so symptoms return when the medication wears off.
H2 blockers like famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. They take 30-60 minutes to work but provide relief for 8-12 hours. These are better for frequent or persistent symptoms than antacids.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole (Prilosec) and lansoprazole (Prevacid) block acid production more powerfully than H2 blockers. They take several days to reach full effectiveness but provide strong relief lasting 24 hours. PPIs work best when taken consistently over weeks.
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) has antibacterial properties and protects the stomach lining. It may help if H. pylori infection is present, though it won't cure the infection alone.
Important considerations: Using antacids too frequently can interfere with nutrient absorption. Long-term PPI use may affect vitamin B12 and magnesium levels. Some people develop tolerance to H2 blockers with continuous use. Over-the-counter medications treat symptoms but don't address underlying causes like H. pylori infection or NSAID use. If you need these medications regularly for more than two weeks, consulting a healthcare provider helps identify the root cause.
Practical takeaway: Before purchasing any medication, read the label carefully and follow recommended dosages. If symptoms persist despite over-the-counter treatment, this information suggests the need for medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause.
Protecting Your Stomach from Common Irritants
Certain substances damage the stomach lining or trigger acid production. Reducing or avoiding these irritants allows your stomach lining to heal and prevents symptom flare-ups.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are among the most common gastritis triggers. These medications damage the protective mucus layer and increase acid production. If you use NSAIDs regularly for pain or inflammation, discussing alternatives with your healthcare provider may be necessary. Options include acetaminophen for pain, different pain management strategies, or specific NSAID formulations designed to be gentler on the stomach.
