What the AARP Safe Driving Course Covers
The AARP Safe Driving Course, also called the AARP Driver Safety Program, provides educational content about safe driving practices for people age 50 and older. The course teaches current traffic laws, defensive driving strategies, and how age-related changes can affect driving ability. Rather than a remedial program for unsafe drivers, it functions as a refresher course that helps mature drivers stay current with road rules and safety techniques.

The course material addresses topics that matter to older drivers. You will learn about:
- Changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time that occur with age
- How medications can affect driving performance
- Strategies for handling glare, night driving, and weather conditions
- Updated traffic laws and road signs
- Proper use of vehicle safety features
- Distraction reduction and focus techniques
- How to drive defensively around other vehicles
- Safe driving when turning, merging, and changing lanes
The course does not focus on teaching basic driving skills to new drivers. Instead, it refreshes knowledge for experienced drivers and explains how the aging process changes driving needs. According to AARP, nearly 32 million licensed drivers in the United States are age 70 or older. The course materials reflect real situations these drivers encounter on modern roads.
Both online and classroom versions cover the same core material, though the presentation differs. The classroom course typically runs four to eight hours, usually split across two sessions. The online version allows you to progress at your own pace over several weeks. Either format presents the same educational foundation about safe driving practices for mature drivers.
Practical Takeaway: Before starting, consider what driving situations concern you most—such as night driving, highway merging, or driving in your local area. This helps you pay close attention to relevant sections and apply the information to your specific driving patterns.
How the Online Course Structure Works
The AARP online safe driving course operates through a straightforward digital platform that you access from your home computer, tablet, or smartphone. You do not need to travel to a physical location or attend scheduled sessions. The course typically takes four to six hours to complete, and you can divide this time across multiple days or weeks based on your schedule.

The online platform organizes content into modules covering specific topics. Each module contains video segments, written information, and interactive elements. The videos usually run between 5 and 15 minutes each, making them short enough to fit into a typical study session. You can pause, rewind, and replay any section without restriction. This flexibility means you can review difficult concepts or take breaks as needed.
Navigation through the online course requires only basic computer skills. The platform uses simple buttons to move forward and backward through sections. Text appears clearly on screen, and audio accompanies videos. Most people find the interface intuitive, even if they do not use computers frequently in daily life. The website provides instructions for logging in, navigating modules, and accessing support if technical problems arise.
The course includes knowledge checks along the way—these are short questions that test your understanding of material just covered. These checks are not graded tests that result in pass or fail outcomes. Instead, they help you confirm you understood the information and show you which areas might need another review. If you answer incorrectly, the course explains the correct information and why it matters.
At the end of the online course, you complete a final assessment. This assessment differs from the knowledge checks because it covers material from the entire course. You typically need to answer correctly on most questions to receive a course completion certificate. The exact requirements vary, but generally you need to demonstrate understanding of the major safety concepts presented.
Practical Takeaway: Set up a quiet, comfortable space for taking the course. Good lighting, a stable internet connection, and minimal distractions help you focus on the material. Have a notebook handy to jot down notes or reminders about topics that particularly apply to your driving situations.
Classroom Course Format and What to Expect
The in-person classroom version of the AARP Safe Driving Course operates through AARP partnerships with local organizations, community centers, libraries, and senior centers across the country. These facilities host instructors who teach the course material in person. The classroom format typically runs for two four-hour sessions held on consecutive or separate days, though some locations offer single eight-hour sessions.

AARP-certified instructors lead classroom sessions. These instructors receive specialized training in adult education and mature driver safety. They present material using slideshows, videos, and printed materials while encouraging questions and discussion. The classroom setting allows you to interact with an instructor and other participants. This can be valuable if you have specific driving concerns or want to discuss how concepts apply to your local roads and traffic patterns.
A typical classroom session schedule looks like this: the instructor begins with an overview of how aging affects driving, then moves through topics including vision and hearing changes, medication effects, defensive driving tactics, and vehicle safety features. Videos illustrate key points, such as how blind spots work or how to recognize skidding situations. Printed workbooks or handouts give you material to follow along and take home for future reference.
The classroom environment is designed to be non-judgmental and collaborative. Other participants typically range from age 50 to 90 or older, creating a peer learning atmosphere where everyone has driving experience and understanding of adult responsibilities. Instructors normalize questions and create space for discussion. Many people find this format helpful because they can ask about situations they actually encounter, and the instructor can provide specific feedback.
Classroom courses include breaks, usually with coffee or refreshments available. Sessions are paced to allow note-taking and discussion without feeling rushed. At the end of the course, participants complete an assessment to show comprehension of material covered. Upon completion, you receive a certificate that you can submit to your insurance company.
Practical Takeaway: When registering for a classroom course, ask about the specific location and parking situation. Some facilities offer convenient parking while others require street parking. Understanding logistics beforehand reduces stress and helps you arrive on time and prepared to focus on learning.
Understanding the Course Costs and Payment Options
The AARP Safe Driving Course carries a participation fee that varies based on the format you choose and your location. As of 2024, the online course typically costs between $15 and $20 for AARP members and slightly more for non-members—usually around $20 to $25. Classroom courses generally cost between $15 and $20 for members and $20 to $30 for non-members. These prices are significantly lower than most other driver education programs.

AARP membership is not strictly required to take the course, but members receive discounted rates. AARP membership costs $16 per year for people age 50 and older, so if you take the course as a non-member, the difference in course cost might approach the cost of a year's membership depending on your location. If you plan to take the course and could benefit from AARP resources generally, membership may offset the price difference.
Prices vary by location because different organizations host the courses. Community centers, senior centers, and libraries that partner with AARP may set slightly different fees based on their operational costs. When searching for a course, you can check the pricing at different local locations to understand what you will pay in your area. Most locations display this information online or provide it by phone.
Payment methods typically include credit card, debit card, and sometimes check or cash depending on the location. For online courses, you pay through the AARP website during registration. For classroom courses, some locations collect payment at registration time while others may allow payment at the first class session. You can contact the course location directly to learn about their specific payment procedures.
Some people receive financial support from other sources for taking the course. Veterans may find discounts through veteran organizations. People with certain insurance policies might receive reductions. Your local Area Agency on Aging can provide information about whether any special programs in your region offer support for driver safety training. Transportation assistance programs sometimes help pay for courses as part of keeping older adults mobile and independent.
Practical Takeaway: Call ahead before registering to confirm current pricing, payment methods accepted, and whether any special discounts apply to your situation. Some locations run seasonal promotions or offer group discounts if you register with friends or family members.
