What the Michaels Credit Card Is and How to Obtain One
The Michaels credit card is a store-branded credit card issued in partnership with Synchrony Bank. Unlike general-purpose credit cards that work at multiple retailers, this card functions primarily as a shopping tool for Michaels stores and their online platform. The card is designed specifically for customers who shop frequently at Michaels, the arts and crafts retail chain with over 1,300 locations across North America.

To obtain this credit card, you'll need to visit a Michaels store or go to their official website. During the request process, you'll provide personal information including your name, address, Social Security number, and income details. Synchrony Bank will review this information and make a lending decision based on your credit history, current credit score, and other financial factors. The approval process typically takes just a few minutes if you request the card in-store, though online requests may take a bit longer.
Once approved, you can use the card immediately for purchases at Michaels locations and on Michaels.com. The card comes in the mail within 7-10 business days if you requested it online. Store requests typically provide a temporary card number that works right away. There is no annual fee for maintaining the Michaels credit card, making it cost-free to hold even if you don't use it regularly.
The card is issued by Synchrony Bank, a major financial institution that also manages credit cards for numerous other retailers. This means your account details, payments, and credit reporting follow standard banking practices and regulations. Your payment activity on the card gets reported to the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—so using the card responsibly can influence your overall credit profile.
Practical Takeaway: Before requesting this card, check your credit score using free tools available through your bank or credit monitoring services. Knowing your credit standing beforehand gives you realistic expectations about approval odds and interest rates you might receive.
Understanding the Rewards Program Structure
The Michaels credit card offers a rewards program that provides points on purchases made with the card. As of current program details, cardholders earn points on every dollar spent at Michaels stores and on Michaels.com. The rewards structure works on a tiered system, meaning you earn different point values depending on what you're purchasing and whether special promotions are running.

The standard earning rate is typically 1 point per dollar spent on most items. However, Michaels frequently runs promotional periods where cardholders earn bonus points—sometimes 4x, 5x, or even higher multipliers on certain product categories or during specific sale events. These promotions change regularly and are communicated through email, in-store signage, and the Michaels website. For example, during holiday shopping seasons or back-to-school periods, the card might offer 5x points on select categories like home décor or school supplies.
Accumulated points convert into rewards that you can use at Michaels. Typically, 100 points equals $5 in Michaels Rewards (this ratio may vary). This means every $100 you spend at regular earning rates generates about $5 in purchasing power to use later. When bonus point promotions are active, you reach reward thresholds much faster. A customer who spends $500 during a 5x points promotion would earn 2,500 points—worth $125 in Michaels Rewards instead of just $25.
You can track your points balance by logging into your online account through the Michaels website or mobile app, or by asking a store associate at checkout. Points don't expire as long as your account remains active with at least one transaction every 24 months. If your account closes due to inactivity or other reasons, you may lose your accumulated points, so regular cardholders should ensure they use the card at least occasionally.
Practical Takeaway: Sign up for Michaels email communications to learn about bonus point promotions before they start. Strategic shopping during 4x or 5x point events can double or triple the rewards value of your purchases compared to regular shopping.
Interest Rates, Fees, and Cost Considerations
The Michaels credit card carries an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) that varies based on your creditworthiness. When you request the card, Synchrony Bank determines your interest rate based on your credit score, payment history, and other financial factors. Current APR ranges typically fall between 16% and 24% for most approved cardholders, though those with excellent credit may receive lower rates, and those with fair credit might receive higher rates. This rate applies to any balance you carry from month to month.

The card has no annual fee, meaning you won't be charged just for having the card in your wallet. This distinguishes it from premium credit cards that charge $95-$500 yearly. However, other standard fees may apply depending on your account activity. A late payment fee typically ranges from $25-$40 if you miss a payment due date. If you make a payment that exceeds your credit limit, an over-limit fee of $25-$40 may apply. Cash advances—withdrawing cash using the card at an ATM—usually carry a fee of 3-5% of the amount withdrawn, plus a higher APR than regular purchases.
Interest charges accumulate on unpaid balances. If you carry a $500 balance at 20% APR and make minimum payments only, the card issuer calculates interest daily. In the first month, approximately $8.33 in interest charges would be added to your balance. If you only pay the minimum each month, interest compounds and you could pay significantly more than the original purchase amount before the balance is cleared. For example, paying minimums on a $1,000 balance at 20% APR could take over 5 years and cost an additional $500+ in interest.
To avoid interest charges entirely, you can pay your full statement balance by the due date each month. The Michaels card provides a grace period of at least 21 days from the statement closing date to your payment due date. Using this grace period means you pay no interest on purchases made during that billing cycle. This strategy allows you to earn rewards points while avoiding interest costs.
Practical Takeaway: If you pay your full balance monthly, the Michaels card costs you nothing while earning rewards. If you regularly carry balances, the high interest rate (16-24%) may outweigh rewards benefits. Calculate whether rewards earnings cover potential interest costs before using the card for large purchases you'll pay off slowly.
How to Maximize Your Rewards and Minimize Costs
Strategic use of the Michaels credit card can significantly increase the rewards you earn. The primary strategy involves timing your purchases to coincide with bonus point promotions. Michaels runs these promotions frequently—typically 8-12 times per year—sometimes offering 4x or 5x points on specific departments or entire purchases. By concentrating planned purchases during these periods, you multiply your earning rate substantially. A customer planning to spend $300 on craft supplies might wait for a 5x point promotion and earn 1,500 points instead of 300, effectively giving them $75 in rewards instead of $15.

Another optimization method involves using the card exclusively for Michaels purchases rather than mixing it with other shopping. Because the card only earns rewards at Michaels and Michaels.com, using it elsewhere provides no benefit. Conversely, many general-purpose credit cards offer 1.5-2% cash back on all purchases, which might be superior for non-Michaels shopping. Dedicating the Michaels card to Michaels purchases and using another card elsewhere ensures you're getting the best rewards rate for each purchase category.
The Michaels mobile app and website often feature digital coupons and deals that stack with credit card rewards. A 20% off coupon combined with a 4x points promotion means you're getting substantial savings plus accelerated rewards accumulation. Additionally, Michaels occasionally offers limited-time promotions like "$25 off $75 purchases with your Michaels card" that represent direct discounts beyond the rewards program. Checking the app before shopping ensures you capture these offers.
To minimize costs while maximizing rewards, commit to paying your full statement balance monthly. This eliminates interest charges that would quickly erase rewards value. Set up automatic payments through your online account if you tend to forget payment due dates. Even the best rewards program becomes costly if you're paying 20% annual interest on balances.
